Top STPM students from two Sibu schools receive cash incentives

Chieng (front row, sixth from right) with Teo (to his right) after presenting award to the students. A total of 95 top Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) achievers from two schools in Sibu's Bukit Assek constituency, Sarawak, received cash incentives. Of a total allocation of RM32,700, 68 students from SMK Sacred Heart received RM23,500 while 27 students from SMK Methodist received RM9,200. The incentives were to reward students for their excellent performance while encouraging them to excel in tertiary education. 'This year, after discussions with teachers from both schools, we decided to refine and enhance our incentive system,' said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng. He said the revised system now rewarded students based on their cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Speaking at the presentation ceremony at SMK Sacred Heart, Chieng said those who scored a CGPA 3.0 to 3.32 received RM200 each, CGPA 3.33-3.66 (RM300), CGPA 3.67-3.99 (RM400) and CGPA 4.0 (RM500). 'This adjustment encourages students to push beyond their limits while rewarding them fairly,' he explained. Chieng also spoke on Sarawak government's efforts to promote education across the state. They include the free tertiary education scheme (FTES), which is set to be implemented next year. It will cover tuition fees for Sarawak students pursuing undergraduate degrees at state-owned institutions. These include Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak, i-Cats University College and Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs). 'For students from households with a per capita income of RM1,500 or below, FTES will provide annual financial aid of RM15,000 to ease their living expenses and support their higher education journey,' said Chieng. 'The incentive aims to ensure that no Sarawak student is left behind,' he highlighted. Also present was SMK Sacred Heart principal David Teo.

Incentives have been awarded to 92 students from SMK Sacred Heart in Sibu, Sarawak, who achieved 5As and above in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. The Bukit Assek constituency comprises four secondary schools – SMK Methodist, Catholic High School, SMK Bukit Assek and SMK Sacred Heart. 'The aim is to encourage and motivate students. 'It also serves as a token of appreciation for their diligence, while offering them some financial support too,' he said. Alumni raising funds to upgrade 115-year-old Melaka school

MELAKA: At least five generations of Malaysians since 1910 have passed through its hallowed halls, and during the Second World War, it housed the short-lived Japanese colonial administration. But today, the roof of SMK Methodist (ACS) in Tengkera leaks when it rains, the blackboards are collapsing, and some of the 115-year-old school's tables and chairs have not been changed since the 1970s. To preserve and continue the legacy of the storied missionary school, the school's alumni are organising a dinner and campaign to raise funds for the institution. 'We are undertaking a comprehensive upgrade, from rewiring the entire building to replacing study tables and chairs that have been in use since the 1970s,' the school's Old Boys Association vice-president, Tan Kim Yoke, said. Tan said they also aim to refurbish the teachers' room and repaint all the classrooms. 'Our goal is to create a conducive space for learning where students feel inspired and teachers feel supported,' he said during a Chromebook presentation and the launch of the school's 115th anniversary celebration. Tan said the alumni are also committed to modernising the school's teaching system. 'We aim to digitalise our education delivery in line with today's evolving landscape while ensuring a safe and inspiring environment for both students and teachers,' he added. Also present at the event was Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong. He said his committee members also hoped that more former students would join the campaign to rebuild the school. 'The involvement of the alumni is not only crucial for funding but it also inspires current students. We want to instil a spirit of loyalty and pride by connecting generations through a shared heritage,' he said. The organising chairman of the school's 115th anniversary celebration, Rodney Tan Chai Whatt, said the fund-raising dinner will be held on Sept 13 at a restaurant in Cheng, offering 100 tables for donors.

Inclusive, progressive education ecosystem key to nation's advancement, says S'wak deputy minister

Tiang (left) presents an award to SMK Methodist principal Philip Ling. SIBU (May 9): The existence of an inclusive and progressive education ecosystem is key to advancing the nation, said Datuk Michael Tiang. The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government said education is a shared responsibility of schools, parents and communities, who must work together to support and empower each student's potential. 'Let us continue to make education a platform to nurture a competitive and holistic generation. 'Through the lens of Malaysia Madani, we will continue to cultivate and empower every aspect of student development so that students not only excel academically but also possess the ability to lead and make a positive impact on society and the country,' he said. Tiang was speaking at a ceremony organised by the Sibu Education Office Student Development Sector to recognise outstanding schools yesterday. In his speech, the Pelawan assemblyman said the outstanding achievement of Sibu students in public examinations and co-curricular activities was testament to the tireless efforts of all parties involved. He said last year, a total of 994 students represented Sibu District in various programmes and competitions at the state level. 'Even more impressive, 1,458 students made Sibu proud at the national level, while 294 students have gone beyond our national borders to represent Malaysia internationally, placing our district on the world map as a region that produces competitive and high-quality students.' Tiang emphasised that in today's educational landscape, academic achievement alone is no longer sufficient; rather, what is more important is shaping students with strong character and well-rounded abilities. 'This is the essence of the Malaysia Madani framework—a concept that emphasises values such as sustainability, well-being, creativity, respect, confidence and compassion,' he added. Among those present at the ceremony were Sibu Education Officer Ahli Chikba, community leader Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau, and Councillor Kevin Lau. education inclusive lead Michael Tiang Sibu
