Incentives have been awarded to 92 students from SMK Sacred Heart in Sibu, Sarawak, who achieved 5As and above in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
The incentives were from Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng amounting to RM38,500.
Chieng said the educational incentives had been implemented in schools within his constituency since 2022.
The Bukit Assek constituency comprises four secondary schools – SMK Methodist, Catholic High School, SMK Bukit Assek and SMK Sacred Heart.
'The aim is to encourage and motivate students.
'It also serves as a token of appreciation for their diligence, while offering them some financial support too,' he said.
Chieng expressed hope that the incentive would encourage students in Bukit Assek to strive for academic excellence.
'To the high-achieving students, I extend my congratulations.
'I urge you to remain focused and disciplined as you progress to the next stage of your educational journey,' he added.
SMK Sacred Heart principal David Teo described the achievements as a collective effort of students, teachers and parents.

PMM Convocation: Top Graduate Fulfils Dream Of Sharing Stage With Parents

JASIN, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- For G. Kishendran, the convocation of Merlimau Polytechnic, Melaka (PMM) was not only a celebration of academic excellence but also the proud moment his wish to be on stage with his parents came true after he scored a perfect 4.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average for six straight semesters. The 23-year-old Diploma in Accountancy graduate was named the recipient of the Director's Award and the Academic and Co-Curricular Excellence Award at the convocation ceremony today, in recognition of his hard work and discipline over three years at PMM. Although he obtained 8As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, his dream was left unfulfilled for five years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a setback that became the driving force for the son of a lorry driver and food caterer to work harder during his studies. 'I'm really happy and thankful. This achievement wouldn't have been possible without my parents' prayers and sacrifices. They worked hard to support the family and give us a proper education. 'I used to feel down and nearly gave up, but the support of my parents, lecturers and friends gave me the strength to keep going, and I dedicate this success to all of them,' he told reporters here today. Earlier, Kishendran received the award from Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Zahari Ismail at the 23rd PMM Convocation Ceremony. The third of six siblings from Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur, said he had been keenly interested in accounting since Form Four. Kishendran said he would wake up as early as 4 am every day to work on assignments, ensuring he managed his time wisely to actively participate in various polytechnic programmes while achieving excellent results academically and in co-curricular activities. He also earned an overall Merit KITA score of 88.75 per cent, the comprehensive assessment system of Malaysian polytechnics that evaluates academics, leadership, co-curricular activities, and student personality.

Nur Syafienaz makes history as first Orang Asli in TESL at IPG Kota Bharu

KOTA BHARU: Nur Syafienaz Nazri, an 18-year-old from the Temiar tribe, has become the first Orang Asli student to study Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) at the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Kota Bharu. The Gua Musang native, who hails from Kampung Lambok, Kuala Betis, aims to use education as a tool to transform her family's future. 'Since childhood, I dreamed of becoming a teacher, especially in English, as few in my village master the language,' she said. She scored 8As in her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) last year and immediately applied to IPG. 'Alhamdulillah, my application was accepted,' she shared during a press meet at the IPG Kota Bharu Campus in Pengkalan Chepa. The eldest of four siblings, she credits her English proficiency to self-learning via TikTok and YouTube, along with teacher support. 'I am grateful to pursue a Bachelor of Teaching (Hons) in TESL for Primary Education here,' she added. She urged other Orang Asli youth to embrace education and step out of their comfort zones. Her mother, Siti Norsyakila Kamarzaman, hopes she adapts well and excels in her studies. IPG Kota Bharu Campus director Dr Narita Mohd Noor confirmed Nur Syafienaz is the first Orang Asli student in the TESL programme. 'This is remarkable, as English is rarely chosen by Orang Asli students, who typically prefer Bahasa Melayu,' she said. This year, IPG Kota Bharu enrolled 529 new students, a significant increase from just over 200 in 2024. - Bernama

The Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia reaffirmed his commitment to supporting such noble efforts, advocating for more inclusive and comprehensive policies for single mothers nationwide, particularly in Sarawak. The Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman made these remarks at Pitwits' Family Day, and which also hosted the presentation ceremony of incentive awards for outstanding students at a local hotel today. Tiong's text-of-speech was read out by Councillor Paul Teo, who represented him at the event. 'I deeply admire the strength and sacrifices of the single mothers present here today. In today's increasingly challenging world, raising children alone is no easy task,' said Tiong. 'Yet, you have proven that with perseverance, love, and an unyielding spirit, you are capable of nurturing your children into successful individuals who contribute to the society and nation,' he added. On Family Day, Tiong emphasised that it was symbolic of the importance of family values and love in shaping a harmonious and prosperous society. 'The family is the fundamental unit in nation-building. Therefore, all of us — including the government, NGOs (non-governmental organisations), and the community — must work together to ensure that all families, regardless of background, receive the necessary opportunities and support,' he stressed. Organising chairperson Seo Hui Mei delivered the opening remarks, with Pitwits chairperson Tang Kiu Mee also in attendance.
