Incentives have been awarded to 92 students from SMK Sacred Heart in Sibu, Sarawak, who achieved 5As and above in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. The incentives were from Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng amounting to RM38,500. Chieng said the educational incentives had been implemented in schools within his constituency since 2022. The Bukit Assek constituency comprises four secondary schools – SMK Methodist, Catholic High School, SMK Bukit Assek and SMK Sacred Heart. 'The aim is to encourage and motivate students. 'It also serves as a token of appreciation for their diligence, while offering them some financial support too,' he said. Chieng expressed hope that the incentive would encourage students in Bukit Assek to strive for academic excellence. 'To the high-achieving students, I extend my congratulations. 'I urge you to remain focused and disciplined as you progress to the next stage of your educational journey,' he added. SMK Sacred Heart principal David Teo described the achievements as a collective effort of students, teachers and parents.

Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Alice Lau said this marked the first time the programme had been held in the Sibu Division, and public response had been very encouraging. 'This kind of programme aims to reach the people at the grassroots level and help the B40 group obtain motorcycle licences. 'This, in turn, opens up opportunities for improving socio-economic status and household income through job opportunities in the logistics and transportation sectors,' she said. Lau was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Class B2 Motorcycle Licence Assistance Programme (BLM) for the Lanang parliamentary constituency at SMK Sacred Heart here today. She added that, according to the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the programme has been implemented since early last year and has involved many participants across Sarawak. 'Participation will continue to increase over time based on predetermined criteria and conditions,' she added. Lau also expressed appreciation to enforcement agencies such as JPJ, the police, and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) for their continued efforts in ensuring road law compliance. 'Their duty is aimed at reducing road accidents, especially fatal ones, so that everyone who leaves home to earn a living can return safely to their families. This aligns with the government's aspiration to reduce road accident fatalities by 50 per cent by the year 2030. 'Always practice courteous behavior, responsibility, and adherence to the law while on the road.' Among the 1,650 participants, the oldest was 72-years-old, while the youngest was 16. Also in attendance were Sarawak JPJ director Norizan Jili and JPJ Sibu branch chief Nurul Fairezzah Safri.

It was informed that the recipients were those who achieved 5As and above in the public examination. 'This marks a significant increase compared to SPM 2023's results, when 77 students achieved this standard with a total incentive of RM30,400. 'This is a proud moment for the school, and a clear sign of continuous improvement – an increase of 15 students, and RM8,100″ said Chieng in his remarks for the SPM 2024 Incentive Presentation Ceremony at SMK Sacred Heart today. The assemblyman said in 2022, he introduced this incentive programme in four secondary schools in his state constituency, including SMK Sacred Heart, with the simple yet meaningful purpose of encouraging academic excellence and rewarding students who strove for success. 'But beyond just the financial support, I hope this initiative serves as a symbol of encouragement, a reminder that every effort matters, and every step you take toward your dreams is worth celebrating.' In this regard, Chieng encouraged the students to continue aiming higher, including pushing their boundaries and believing in their potential. Moreover, he extended his congratulations to SMK Sacred Heart for reaching a remarkable achievement this time, ranking among the top secondary schools in Sarawak for SPM 2024 results. incentives joseph chieng Sibu SMK Sacred Heart SPM

Sibu pushes pickleball to the fore
Chieng (fifth from left) presenting the SMK Sacred Heart pickleball club flag to the school's senior assistant for co-curricular activities, Lau Tiew Kiong (fifth from right). Sibu Pickleball Association (SPA) is promoting the sport by building a pickleball stadium and holding its first inter-secondary school competition. These steps are part of a mission to nurture local talent and grassroots development. Association president Joseph Chieng announced RM3.05mil had been allocated under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) for phase one of the stadium project – Bukit Lima Sports Arena. This will feature 10 indoor pickleball courts. An additional RM2mil has been set aside for phase two that is slated to start in 2026. 'Sibu Municipal Council, as the implementing agency, is in the process of appointing consultants. 'Once finalised, the design and site application will commence soon after,' said Chieng who is also Bukit Assek assemblyman. He shared this update during the setting up of pickleball clubs in 11 schools in the Sibu district. The schools are SMK Methodist, SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Bukit Assek, SMK St Elizabeth, SMK Tung Hua, SMK Deshon, SMK Sungai Merah, SMK Bandar Sibu, Catholic High School, SM Wong Nai Siong, and Woodlands International School. Chieng said the initiative was part of the association's two-pronged mission. They aim to set up pickleball clubs as part of co-curricular programmes in schools, and to build more courts to support the sport's long-term growth. Students participating in these clubs will be awarded co-curricular activity points. 'SPA is working towards this mission step by step, with commitment and collaboration from all stakeholders,' said Chieng. He said SPA was set to host the Sibu Inter-Secondary School Pickleball Competition in early September, in collabora- tion with the Sibu Division Education Office. The tournament is expected to become an annual event to cultivate camaraderie, sportsmanship and a talent pipeline. 'Through the competition, we can select potential Sibu and Sarawak junior players respectively for the future Sukan Sarawak and Sukan Malaysia,' he added. Chieng also highlighted growing support from local community organisations. Catholic High School Alumni Association has already built three courts in the school's premises. Meanwhile, Sibu Methodist Schools Alumni Association also plans to build three courts at SMK Methodist. 'At the same time, I would like to urge more school boards and alumni associations to assist in the building of pickleball courts at their respective schools,' Chieng said. This support, he said, was crucial in creating an environment where students could actively train and excel in pickleball. Sibu Education officer Ahli Chikba called on those involved in the sport to work together to promote the sport. 'We are working together with teachers and students to make Sibu the champion in the game,' he said.
