SIBU (May 10): A total of 1,650 participants in the Lanang parliamentary constituency have successfully obtained their Class B2 motorcycle licences through the Class B2 Motorcycle Licence Assistance Programme (BLM).
Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Alice Lau said this marked the first time the programme had been held in the Sibu Division, and public response had been very encouraging.
'This kind of programme aims to reach the people at the grassroots level and help the B40 group obtain motorcycle licences.
'This, in turn, opens up opportunities for improving socio-economic status and household income through job opportunities in the logistics and transportation sectors,' she said.
Lau was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Class B2 Motorcycle Licence Assistance Programme (BLM) for the Lanang parliamentary constituency at SMK Sacred Heart here today.
She added that, according to the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the programme has been implemented since early last year and has involved many participants across Sarawak.
'Participation will continue to increase over time based on predetermined criteria and conditions,' she added.
Lau also expressed appreciation to enforcement agencies such as JPJ, the police, and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) for their continued efforts in ensuring road law compliance.
'Their duty is aimed at reducing road accidents, especially fatal ones, so that everyone who leaves home to earn a living can return safely to their families. This aligns with the government's aspiration to reduce road accident fatalities by 50 per cent by the year 2030.
'Always practice courteous behavior, responsibility, and adherence to the law while on the road.'
Among the 1,650 participants, the oldest was 72-years-old, while the youngest was 16.
Also in attendance were Sarawak JPJ director Norizan Jili and JPJ Sibu branch chief Nurul Fairezzah Safri.
