50% of Bengal's UPSC final candidates hail from government-run study centre
The West Bengal government-run Satyendra Nath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre (SNTCSSC) has helped multiple State students crack the top civil service exams in 2024. The candidates were felicitated by the study centre on Friday (May 30, 2025) after the lists were published in May 2025. 50% of the candidates who have cracked the UPSC Civil Services Examination from West Bengal hail from this centre. The government-run study centre candidates who have made it to the final list are Meghna Chakravorty, Sahars Kumar, Paramita Malakar, Rajdeep Ghosh, and Praveen Kumar. 'We are also happy to share that 54 students of SNTCSSC had cleared UPSC CSE 2024 Prelims. 17 candidates from SNTCSSC had appeared for the UPSC CSE 2024 Personality Test and ultimately 5 of them have made it to the final list of UPSC CSE 2024,' an official statement from the study centre said. Manoj Pant, IAS, Chief Secretary to the West Bengal government, was present at the felicitation ceremony to meet the candidates. SNTCSSC has tied up with nationally reputed institutes like Shubhra Ranjan IAS and Dhyeya IAS to offer general studies classes and comprehensive mock test series for both general studies and optional subjects. Previously, the centre had collaborated with top academies such as Khan Study Group (KSG) and Shankar IAS Academy (SIA).

State felicitates 10 from Bengal who cracked civil services exams
Kolkata: Meghna Chakravorty, a Modern High School alumna, who ranked 79th in the Civil Services Exam 2024, scored the second highest (215) in interview, just one mark below the national highest of 216. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Now that I transition from the other side, which was filled with darkness and uncertainty, to this side, I wonder if we should ever forget the hardships and struggle that was needed to get here," said Meghna at the state felicitation event for this year's successful civil service aspirants. She and four others trained at the state-run Satyendra Nath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre. In all, 10 from Bengal cleared the exam. This was Meghna's second attempt at the exam. "Didn't go up to the interview level last time," said Meghna, who graduated from St Stephen's College and did her PG from JNU. As Urmi Sinha, who bagged 170th rank in the UPSC-conducted exam in her maiden attempt, shared her childhood dream of becoming an IAS officer, she spotted her mother, Poonam, crying in the audience. "Mamma, don't cry..." said Urmi softly, unable to continue. "Can't thank SNTCSSC enough for all the help they offered my daughter," said Archana Malakar, mother of Paramita, who ranked 477. Paramita, away on training, couldn't attend the event. Rajdeep Ghosh, who has ranked 789th, will give it another shot next year. Everyone in the audience was stunned by grit as he said, "I shall be here to take the exams with you next year again." The candidates thanked the nonagenarian Jyotirmoy Pal Chaudhuri, veteran civil service trainer and SNTCSSC's academic consultant. "Instead of asking 'what went wrong' we should perhaps ask 'what went right'," he laughed. State chief secretary Manoj Pant, who drew parallels between the candidates and his own journey, advised that persistent effort would do the trick. "I want to reiterate what Mr Pal Chaudhuri said. Never forget that you are here to serve (the people of India) and serve with integrity," Pant said. Among the others felicitated were Sahars Kumar (153), Praveen Kumar (837), Yash Kumar (227), Prativa Lama (461), Zojila Dolkar Bhutia (765) and Rishita Das (840). "Our 2024 batch has done really well—54 from our centre cleared the prelims, 17 went up to the personality test and five made it to the final list," SNTCSSC chairperson Surajit Kar Purkayastha said.

Five from Bengal govt run study centre make it to Civil Services merit list
Five candidates from West Bengal government run Satyendra Nath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre (SNTCSSC) have made it final merit list of the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024. A statement from SNTCSSC said that about 17 candidates from the Centre appeared for personality test out of which five have made it to the merit list. Among the successful candidates are Meghna Chakravorty- a resident of Salt Lake, Paramita Malakar from North 24 Parganas, Sahars Kumar, from Ballygunge, Kolkata, Rajdeep Ghosh, a resident of Ranaghat Nadia and Praveen Kumar, originally from Giridih, Jharkhand, currently working in Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the 'candidates who have achieved brilliant results in the UPSC Civil Services Examinations, 2024 from West Bengal, after getting coaching assistance from our Satyendra Nath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre.' 'Meghna Chakrabarty (79), Sahars Kumar (153), Paramita Malakar (477), Rajdeep Ghosh (789) and Praveen Kumar (837) got our state governmental coaching and have brought laurels for us by getting impressive ranks as mentioned in the brackets. They are likely to enter now IAS/ IPS/ other top services,' the Chief Minister posted on social media. The Centre, which provides guidance to civil service aspirants was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on January 2014 and was called Civil Services Study Centre (CSSC). In 2021, the Centre was rechristened Satyendra Nath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre in the name of Satyendranath Tagore, who became the first Indian Civil Service Officer in 1863 Officials of SNTCSSC said that over the past few years, about 15 to 20 candidates have made it to the interviews of the Civil Services Examination and five to six candidates make it to the merit list. The SNTCSSC is governed by Centre for Excellence in Public Management comprises of officials of the West Bengal government including State's Chief Secretary and the objective of the Centre is to 'provide good quality coaching at a reasonable fee and help students intending to appear in the Civil Services Examination' Former Director General of West Bengal police Surajit Kar Purkayastha who is the chairman of SNTCSSC said that more and more students should qualify civil services examination of the State. Mr. Purkayastha said that it was because of efforts of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that the Centre was set up and has come to the aid of many students preparing for civil services at a reasonable cost.

7 examinees from Bengal shine on UPSC merit list

CM Mamata Banerjee, in a post on X congratulating the state toppers, mentioned that Meghna Chakrabarty (AIR 79), Sahars Kumar (AIR 153), Paramita Malakar (AIR 477), Rajdeep Ghosh (AIR 789) and Praveen Kumar (AIR 837) were coached by the state-run Satyendranath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre (SNTCSSC). The CM said: "They are likely to enter now IAS/ IPS/ other top services. There are others also from West Bengal who have succeeded in cracking the all-India examinations and should similarly get into apex services now. Kudos boys and girls for these feats. Government of West Bengal is with you!" Meghna, a resident of AC Block in Salt Lake, wants to work in Bengal. "After spending my formative years in Mumbai, I did my schooling in Modern High School from class VI," she said. Meghna graduated from St Stephen's College, Delhi, and then completed her master's in politics and international relations from JNU in 2022. This was her second attempt at the exam. The Bengal topper put in 8-12 hours of study every day, spending a year in Delhi after her master's to take coaching before returning to Kolkata in 2023 for her advanced preparations. Sahars (31) said this was his fourth and last attempt, and he quit his job to concentrate on studies. The Bondel Road resident studied in Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur, before completing his BTech from IIT-Kanpur. The Hills are also celebrating. Prativa Lama has secured an all-India rank of 461 while Zojila Dolkar Bhutia, a 29-year-old Group-A officer working with the directorate of registration and stamp revenue under the govt of Bengal, has secured a rank of 765. Bhutia, a Darjeeling resident, completed her class X from Loreto Convent, Darjeeling, and her class XII from St Joseph's, Matigara. She graduated from Miranda House, University of Delhi, in political science in 2017, and cleared the West Bengal Civil Services examination on her first attempt in 2018. She began her preparation for the UPSC exam in 2020 and cracked it on her third attempt. "I was studying while working full-time," said Bhutia, who is posted in Kurseong. SNTCSSC chairperson Surajit Kar Purkayastha said, "In the times ahead, I foresee a growing number of bright minds from Bengal not only appearing in the UPSC examinations but also securing success at the highest levels. The momentum is building, and Bengal is poised to make its mark."
