Why Noida must fast-track its skywalk plan at this office hub in Sector 62
Noida: Noida Authority is preparing to build a circular skywalk equipped with a travelator at the Model Town crossing near the Sector 62-63 roundabout along Delhi-Meerut Expressway to ease traffic congestion in the area and ensure safer pedestrian movement. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Being a crucial junction where jaywalking is rampant, the skywalk will not only facilitate easier crossing of Vishwakarma Road outside the Electronic City Metro station, but it will also benefit thousands of commuters who walk through to board buses and other public transport services to Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, and other destinations. A hub of IT firms and educational institutions, Sector 62 is a key area that sees massive traffic every day. The area also includes the Blue Line's Electronic City metro station, making it a major transit point for professionals, students, and other commuters. Surendra Kumar Gupta, president of the federation of Sector 62 RWAs, said that commuters heading to or from Sectors 59, 61, 62, 63, 51, 71, etc., regularly use this route. "People coming from Meerut exit here to reach Noida, while many also travel from here to Delhi. The junction becomes chaotic during morning and evening peak hours, with many pedestrians forced to jaywalk, risking their lives due to the lack of a convenient crossing," he said. The area is further congested by encroachments from e-rickshaws and autos ferrying passengers to various sectors in Noida and Ghaziabad. Footpaths remain largely unusable due to the presence of street vendors and hawkers, leaving little space for pedestrians. Meanwhile, SP Singh, general manager at Noida Authority, acknowledged the challenges and said that while a foot overbridge (FOB) already exists about 200 metres away from the crossing, many people avoid using it due to the distance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We plan to build a 400-metre-long circular skywalk with a width of 4 metres, connecting all four directions at the crossing. It will be equipped with a travelator and will also be linked to the existing FOB to facilitate people crossing the DME," he said. The skywalk will be built above the ground to mirror the roundabout. It will be around 400 m long and covered with an iron roof so that people can use it comfortably even during rain or heat. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 40 crore, and the authority aims to complete it within a year. The design and drawings have been submitted to IIT Delhi for technical vetting. "We expect to receive IIT's clearance soon. Any suggestions for design modifications will be incorporated, following which we will begin the tendering process and move to construction," Singh added.

80% population in Odisha vulnerable to Hepatitis B: Prof SP Singh
BHUBANESWAR: Over 80 per cent of Odisha's total population is still vulnerable to Hepatitis B infection that can simply be prevented through vaccination, said renowned gastroenterologist Prof SP Singh on Sunday. Speaking to TNIE on the eve of World Hepatitis Day, Prof Singh said about 0.9 per cent of population in the state is affected with Hepatitis B and the trend remains almost same for the last two-and-half decades. 'However, a majority of the population is still unaware of the infection, caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), impacting both prevention and control efforts,' he said. The chairman of the Kalinga Gastroenterology Foundation (KGF) said in a study carried out in Cuttack a few years back, the awareness among the people about the disease and vaccine was found to be just about 38 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively. Besides, about 50 per cent of those who were aware had no knowledge about the route of transmission, infectivity or importance of vaccination. The percentage of vaccination was also a mere 20. He called for stronger adherence to World Health Organisation (WHO)'s comprehensive approach to hepatitis that includes 'screen all, vaccinate all and treat all' to protect the population that has never been a part of the vaccination programme. He also sought compulsory vaccination for children in all schools. The KGF is set to celebrate its 25th Hepatitis B Eradication Day and the 15th World Hepatitis Day on Monday with this year's theme 'Lets Break Down.' The KGF will also present three awards - Blumberg Oration Award to eminent hepatologist Prof Nancy Reau from Chicago, KGF Samman to Prof Anup Kumar Das from AMC, Dibrugarh and Siba Panigrahi Samman to sculptor Sanjib Biswal.

Bulk waste not treated on-site, club fined 10 lakh for violating norms in Noida
1 2 Noida: The Authority on Friday imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Unitech Golf & Country Club, in Sector 96, for violating rules of bulk waste generators. The officials in an earlier inspection, found improper segregation, storage, and handling of solid waste management. Under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) rules, 2016, bulk generators are required to treat their wet waste on-site. The city generates nearly 800 tons of solid waste per day, of which nearly 30% comes from BWGs. SP Singh, general manager (health), said, "We found that legacy waste and daily garbage were being dumped indiscriminately within their premises. The garbage was found dumped on public roads by the employees. Due to the dumping of legacy waste, there is a high risk of groundwater contamination." The Authority also conducted a workshop for bulk waste generators last month and sensitised them on the issue. During the workshop, instructions were given on how to segregate waste into different categories like wet waste, dry waste, hazardous waste, medical waste, etc. The Noida Authority has also stopped collecting mixed waste from BWGs from July 1. A clear warning was also issued that if bulk waste generators fail to comply with the rules, strict legal action will be taken against them.

Five-km daily walk, half-plate meal can reverse nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: Study
BHUBANESWAR: Not expensive medications, just a brisk 5-km daily walk and half-plate meal at lunch-dinner can significantly reverse nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) within a short period, a landmark study from Odisha has established. While NAFLD, a major precursor of serious diseases like liver cancer and cirrhosis, has emerged a leading public health problem in the country over the recent years, the study has challenged the growing dependence on medications for its treatment. Led by eminent gastroenterologist and former head of gastroenterology department at SCB MCH, Cuttack, Prof SP Singh, the team of researchers from various medical institutes in the country have demonstrated that a very simple combination of reduced diet and increased physical activity, particularly walking, can reverse NAFLD substantially. Conducted at the Kalinga Gastroenterology Foundation, the study followed 565 NAFLD patients over a one-year period. Majority of them were from rural areas and consumed high calorific diet. Around one-fifth of them had pre-existing type 2 diabetes and hypertension. The advice of the study team was simple: reduce dietary intake by 50 per cent and walk 5 km per day. The patients were followed up monthly and contacted weekly to ensure compliance. At the end of the year, the results were striking. As high as 85.2 per cent of the participants had lost weight with mean BMI reducing from 26.08 to 25.06. Liver stiffness decreased in nearly 68 per cent of the patients. A two-point reduction in liver stiffness was marked in 52 per cent, while one-stage reversal in liver fibrosis was observed in 40.5 per cent. Around 16.4 per cent of the patients also marked complete resolution of fatty liver. Improvements were also seen in fasting glucose, cholesterol levels, liver enzymes and insulin resistance.
