Sardar Patel University partners with Dundee varsity for anti-cancer drug research

Sardar Patel University (SPU)'s Department of Chemistry has partnered with the University of Dundee, UK, through a Joint Ownership and Management Agreement (JOMA), signed on July 18. This collaboration, between Professor Hitendra Patel from SPU and Professor Sourav Banerjee from Dundee, aims to co-own patents and drive the commercialization of anti-cancer drug research. Under the joint partnership, the researchers have identified inhibitors that could help 'prevent' cancer in some organs. The findings of the research have been published in the European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. The agreement allows both universities 'to manage intellectual property and revenue-sharing as discoveries move toward technology transfer,' said an official statement. Dundee University's Medicinal Chemistry team will engage pharmaceutical companies to explore commercialization opportunities even as the SPU students will play an active role in the research. 'We have published over eight research papers and filed two patents jointly. These inhibitors show promising predictions, and further studies are underway,' said Professor Hitendra Patel from SPU. SPU Honorary Vice Chancellor Professor Niranjan Patel said the partnership will accelerate research and enhance SPU's global profile. 'This agreement paves the way for groundbreaking collaboration, helping develop intellectual property, joint patents, and future opportunities for technology transfer,' he said. This is Sardar Patel University's second international research agreement. The first was signed by the Department of Physics with a Germany-based university for research collaboration. No-Gym Needed: Lifestyle Expert's Easy Trick To Regulate Blood Sugar

As type 2 diabetes continues to surge across India, driven by sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary habits, wellness expert Luke Coutinho points to a surprisingly simple movement that may help regulate blood sugar: the Soleus Push-Up (SPU). Backed by emerging scientific research, this low-effort calf exercise could become a useful tool in managing post-meal glucose spikes, particularly for those seeking accessible, at-home strategies. In a recent Instagram post, Luke Coutinho has urged the country to confront and fight health problems like obesity and diabetes that are very common in India. Luke claims that a sedentary lifestyle can have a silently devastating effect on your health, regardless of whether you have diabetes, prediabetes, or cardiac problems. One ought to expect metabolic decrease, impaired circulation, and elevated blood sugar. Soleus Push-Up, a simple yet efficient method of exercising while seated, makes it feasible to manage these problems. It is primarily composed of a lot of mitochondria and slow-twitch fibres, which enable effective glucose absorption. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Luke Coutinho - Official (@luke_coutinho) How to do Soleus Push-Up: 30 minutes after meals, whether you spend there watching TV or listening to music. Keep your back straight when you sit. Get on your tiptoes by lifting your heels off the ground. Keeping your toes on the ground, drop your heels back down. Aim for 300 reps over time after starting with 100. Benefits of Soleus Push-Up: The soleus muscle improves lipid profiles by aiding in the absorption of fatty acids and glucose from the bloodstream when it is activated. It stimulates the soleus, a strong muscle in your lower leg that gets its energy from circulating fat and blood sugar. This results in increased calorie burning while seated and improved blood sugar regulation after meals. A research by Marc T Hamilton et al. found that regular SPUs significantly improved VLDL metabolism, lipid levels, and glucose tolerance, all important markers of metabolic health. According to a recent study, SPU helped cut blood sugar rises after meals by more than 50 per cent. Consistent practice enhances circulation, promotes insulin function, and may even aid in fat metabolism. Luke Coutinho suggests that soleus push-ups are neither a treatment nor a substitute for medical care or leading a healthy lifestyle. Their effects are consistent and develop gradually over time. SPU alerts people to the harm of illegally dumping tires

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) says it's cracking down on the illegal dumping of used tires. The issue has increased by 82% since 2022 The department says that in 2024, there were more than 1,400 illegally dumped tires found in greenbelts, public rights-of-way, and other community spaces. The city spent $2.9 million in general funds on the cleanup of illegal dumping, including tires. According to the Department of Ecology, tires can cause soil contamination, attract rodents, and hold water, which can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. 'We're committed to working with the community to share resources and raise awareness about how to properly dispose of used tires,' said Lee Momon, Director of SPU's Seattle Clean City program. SPU says you can help by preventing illegal dumping from happening. They say you can ask your local tire shop to recycle your tires after buying new ones. You can also drop off tires at North or South transfer stations, or find proper disposal locations by calling 1-800-RECYCLE or visiting

Umno patriotic school to build consistent, principled future leaders

KUALA LUMPUR: The establishment of Umno Patriotic School (SPU) will help produce party assets who are steadfast in their struggles and stand firm in their principles. Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said with SPU, the party can avoid the risk of having inconsistent or unprincipled leaders in the future. "SPU is Umno's future asset. We want to shape leaders and members who are consistent. "We don't want to produce 'lalang', jumping parties with the slightest threat," he said in his speech at Umno 79th Anniversary celebrations and the inaugural SPU Malaysia Convocation. Also present were party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Ghani, and secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. Wan Rosdy who is also chairman of SPU's board of governors said the school is not a seasonal initiative or pilot programme but a long-term, structured and consistent political education system. He said that SPU is not just another training programme but a vital initiative in grooming disciplined, principled, and resilient Umno leaders. "SPU is a key part of the 'Umno Moving Forward' vision. It represents a major shift in party reform. "It's not solely focused on election strategy, but also on grassroots strength and the quality of future leadership," he said. Wan Rosdy added that SPU is a special project born from the vision and thinking of the party president. He also said that the participants had undergone intensive modules to prove their capability as future leaders. "Some of them were involved in the recent Ayer Kuning by-election and performed well, including in attracting voters to support Umno," he said. A total of 48 participants completed their training and received their certificates from SPU, while the second cohort of 62 trainees has already begun their programme.
