Sardar Patel University partners with Dundee varsity for anti-cancer drug research

Sardar Patel University (SPU)'s Department of Chemistry has partnered with the University of Dundee, UK, through a Joint Ownership and Management Agreement (JOMA), signed on July 18. This collaboration, between Professor Hitendra Patel from SPU and Professor Sourav Banerjee from Dundee, aims to co-own patents and drive the commercialization of anti-cancer drug research. Under the joint partnership, the researchers have identified inhibitors that could help 'prevent' cancer in some organs. The findings of the research have been published in the European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. The agreement allows both universities 'to manage intellectual property and revenue-sharing as discoveries move toward technology transfer,' said an official statement. Dundee University's Medicinal Chemistry team will engage pharmaceutical companies to explore commercialization opportunities even as the SPU students will play an active role in the research. 'We have published over eight research papers and filed two patents jointly. These inhibitors show promising predictions, and further studies are underway,' said Professor Hitendra Patel from SPU. SPU Honorary Vice Chancellor Professor Niranjan Patel said the partnership will accelerate research and enhance SPU's global profile. 'This agreement paves the way for groundbreaking collaboration, helping develop intellectual property, joint patents, and future opportunities for technology transfer,' he said. This is Sardar Patel University's second international research agreement. The first was signed by the Department of Physics with a Germany-based university for research collaboration.
