[Watch] Should You Take A 5-Year Or 9-Year Car Loan? It's All About Your Spending Habits

Subscribe to our FREE Here's a question that keeps Malaysian car buyers up at night: Should I torture myself with higher monthly payments for five years, or stretch it out to nine and risk paying more interest? Financial expert Faiz Azmi (@financialfaiz) has been fielding this exact question on TikTok, and his answer might surprise you. It's not about the math – it's about knowing yourself. If you're someone who struggles to save money consistently, just go with the 5-year loan, Faiz says bluntly. Where the Math Gets Interesting Pay it off quickly and avoid dragging out your debt. Fair enough. But here's where it gets interesting. For those who can actually stick to a budget and invest the difference, the 9-year option might be the smarter play. Using a top-spec Perodua Bezza as an example, Faiz breaks down the numbers: 5-year loan: RM880 monthly payments 9-year loan: RM584 monthly payments The difference: RM296 every month The RM296 Question That RM296 difference is where things get spicy. Imagine saving that RM296 every month for 9 years, with compound interest working in your favour, Faiz explains. The growth could be substantial. He's not wrong. Even without getting into specific investment returns, that's over RM31,000 in raw savings over the loan period – money that could be working for you instead of sitting in a bank account earning peanuts. Beyond Car Loans: The SSPN Play Faiz also throws in a curveball: Malaysia's National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN). With If you're in the 24% to 25% tax bracket, that RM8,000 deduction saves you about RM2,000 in taxes, he notes. But this strategy only works if you actually invest or save that difference. If you're the type who sees extra money as shopping money, you're better off with the 5-year plan. The Personality-First Approach If you can't control your spending, don't even think about the 9-year option, Faiz warns. Just pay off the debt quickly and avoid the temptation to blow money. The guy's got a point. Financial flexibility is only valuable if you use it wisely. It's refreshingly honest advice in a world full of one-size-fits-all financial tips. Sometimes the best financial strategy is the one that works with your personality, not against it. READ MORE : READ MORE : READ MORE : Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . RM500 aid disbursed to UiTM Sabah students under PTPTN scheme

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 159 needy students of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah received one-off financial aid of RM500 each to ease their financial burden. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir (pic) said the RM79,500 allocation was disbursed under the ministry's PTPTN Madani Education Assistance Programme. 'This initiative is to ensure that all eligible students have access to quality education regardless of financial background, in line with the ministry and PTPTN's commitment to enhancing higher education in the country. 'The aid reflects our concern for students needing financial support to pursue their dreams,' he said during the presentation ceremony held at the university yesterday, Bernama reported. Zambry said the financial aid was contributed by various parties through PTPTN. He also urged parents to open National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) accounts for their children's future education needs. 'Parents can open an account as soon as the child is born and start saving gradually. Over time, the amount will grow and can later be used to fund higher education,' he said. PTPTN, in a statement issued following the event, said that since the education assistance programme's introduction in 2022, a total of RM981,000 had been disbursed to benefit 1,962 students across 16 public universities.

Wife of fallen FRU officer says she forgives lorry driver

GOPENG: The wife of the late Kpl Amiruddin Zabri, one of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who perished in an accident near Teluk Intan earlier this week, does not bear any grudges against the lorry driver involved in the incident. Norazian Mohd Joned, 38, said she does not blame the driver, believing that the incident was fated. "I forgive the lorry driver, as the incident might be 'asbab' (fated). "Maybe it was just the way it was meant to happen. It was merely the cause for his passing," said Norazian, with tears streaming down her cheeks. She said this during the visit by National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) chief operating officer Mastura Mohd Khalid as part of their Ziarah Kasih programme held at her home here on Saturday (May 18). During the 8.50am incident on May 13, a gravel-laden lorry had crashed into an FRU truck on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, which was on its way back to base in Sungai Senam in Ipoh. Kpl Amiruddin was among nine FRU members who were killed in the accident, while nine others were injured. Norazian, who works as an administrative assistant at the Kampar police station, said Kpl Amiruddin had once spoken about the honour of dying in service. "He once spoke about a case involving firemen who drowned while trying to save others. "He said the firemen died honourably and the entire country had prayed for them. Maybe he had a similar wish in his heart," she said, adding that it still felt surreal with her husband being no longer around. "There was also a case recently where a man died in front of a mosque right after Friday prayers and my husband said if God has determined your time, not even a minute will be delayed. "Everything else is just the means. Maybe this lorry was just the means for the nine of them to go, it was already fated," she added. Mastura said that the late Kpl Amiruddin was a Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (SSPN) Prime depositor, having opened an account on May 7 this year. "He had sufficient savings to qualify for takaful benefits. "The family will receive RM1,000 in takaful protection and RM3,000 in death benefit, and in total RM4,000," she said. "Although no amount of money could replace a lost loved one, we hope this contribution and insurance benefit will help lessen the family's financial burden and support their children's educational future," she added.
