159 UiTM Sabah students receive RM500 aid under MOHE-PTPTN MADANI
The aid was disbursed under the MOHE-PTPTN MADANI Education Assistance Programme, a collaboration between the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir emphasised the programme's role in supporting students from low-income backgrounds.
'This initiative ensures that eligible students can access quality education regardless of financial constraints, aligning with MOHE and PTPTN's commitment to strengthening higher education in Malaysia,' he said during the presentation ceremony at UiTM Sabah.
The RM79,500 allocation was contributed by various parties through PTPTN and distributed to deserving students.
Zambry also encouraged parents to open National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) accounts early for their children's future education needs.
'Starting savings from birth allows gradual accumulation, which can later fund higher education,' he added.
Since its launch in 2022, the MOHE-PTPTN MADANI programme has disbursed RM981,000 to 1,962 students across 16 public universities. - Bernama

High Court upholds RM780,000 awarded to sacked exec
The High Court in George Town, Penang, upheld an earlier decision by the Industrial Court. GEORGE TOWN : The High Court here has upheld an Industrial Court's decision awarding nearly RM800,000 in back wages and compensation to a senior employee of a semiconductor firm who was wrongfully dismissed in 2018. The High Court's decision will see Kon Siang Boon, a former global account manager at Molex (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, retaining the RM789,333.58 awarded to him by the Industrial Court last year. The High Court also ordered the company to pay RM7,500 in costs. Justice Anand Ponnudurai, in his ruling today, said there was no error of law in the Industrial Court's findings, and that the court had rightfully preferred Kon's version of events over the company's, based on the credibility of witnesses. Kon, who had been attached with the company for nearly 30 years, was accused of making fraudulent claims while on a business trip, which Molex claimed breached company policy, and was subsequently sacked in 2018 after a domestic inquiry. The Industrial Court, however, found the dismissal unjustified and procedurally flawed. At the time of his dismissal, he was earning over RM21,000 a month, with bonuses and allowances. According to the facts of the case, from 2016 to November 2017, Kon submitted meal and transport claims under the prevailing company travel policy, which were all approved by his superiors. Molex revised this policy on Nov 1, 2017, to bar meal claims. However, the Industrial Court found that this revised policy had not been clearly communicated to Kon. The court accepted Kon's testimony that he only became aware of the new rules in December 2017 and had stopped making such claims after that. In delivering his ruling, Anand said the Industrial Court's decision was reasonable and backed by detailed analysis.

Govt's RM100 Cash Aid To Spur Spending, Benefit Small Traders
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- The government's RM100 one-off cash assistance is expected to generate a significant ripple effect for local economies, particularly benefiting small traders, wet market operators and neighbourhood retailers across the country. Business and sustainability consultant Amarjeet Singh Sran emphasised that while the amount may seem modest, it serves as a relief measure for households in the Bottom 40 (B40) and Medium 40 (M40) income groups. 'More importantly, it provides a much-needed boost of liquidity to grassroots-level commerce. We are looking at an estimated RM2 billion flowing into the market almost instantly. 'That money will not sit in savings accounts… it will be spent, and that is where the retail ecosystem, especially small and micro businesses, stand to gain the most,' he told Bernama in an interview here today. Amarjeet said small traders, food stall operators, wet market vendors and sundry shops are likely to see immediate benefits, as recipients use the cash for essential goods and daily necessities. 'From the cendol stall in Johor to the fishmonger in Sarawak, this aid empowers consumers to spend, and that spending supports livelihoods downstream,' he said. The RM100 assistance is part of a wider government effort to reduce the financial burden on households and support the local economy, especially those grappling with rising living costs and inflationary pressures. Combined with measures, such as stabilised petrol prices, a freeze on electricity tariff hikes, and delays in toll increases, Amarjeet said households are likely to see more disposable income, which in turn encourages retail spending. 'For example, a B40 household with five children could collectively receive up to RM500, assuming three of them are above 18 years old. That amount, when spent, brings real value not just to the family, but to every small business in their vicinity,' he explained.

Factory worker loses RM500k in online investment scam in Muar
MUAR: A 46-year-old factory worker lost nearly RM500,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam promising unrealistically high returns. The victim, who lodged a police report yesterday, was lured by an advertisement on social media in early May. Muar police chief ACP Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the victim clicked on a link and was later contacted via WhatsApp by an unknown individual. The scammer instructed him to download an app called 'PHG PLUS,' which guaranteed returns of 50% within a week and 500% in six months. 'Believing the promises, the victim deposited a total of RM488,740 into six different accounts through 39 transactions between May 21 and July 21, 2025,' Raiz Mukhliz said in a statement. The victim only realised he had been cheated when he tried to withdraw what was supposedly RM6 million in profits. He was then asked to pay an additional RM600,000 for 'income tax' before any withdrawal could be processed. The case is now being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Authorities urge the public to be cautious of online investment schemes offering unusually high returns. – Bernama
