5 Bangladeshi Citizens Arrested For Illegal Infiltration In Assam

Guwahati: At least five Bangladeshi citizens were arrested and later pushed back by security personnel on Tuesday in Assam's South Salmara district on the charges of illegal infiltration. Taking to X, Chief Minister Sarma wrote: "With an uncompromising stand on illegal infiltration, @SSalmaraPolice and @BSF_India apprehended 5 Bangladeshi nationals attempting unlawful entry and pushed them back on across the border." Earlier, the Chief Minister said: "We have put the security forces on high alert at the international border following the unrest in Bangladesh to check infiltration. The police have detected a good number of illegal immigrants on a daily basis along the international border; however, no Hindu infiltrator from Bangladesh was arrested in the last five months." Mr Sarma argued that the Hindu community people immigrated from Bangladesh 30 or 40 years ago, and the rest of the people have been living in the neighbouring country for different reasons. "Most of the Hindu community people who had the desire to cross the border and come to India had come here 30 or 40 years ago. The rest of the minority people have been living in Bangladesh despite facing large-scale atrocities in the neighbouring country. I guess they have their own reasons for staying there – maybe a love for the soil or patriotism towards Bangladesh," he said. Mr Sarma also stated that the Bangladeshi infiltration spiked up in the last few months due to the collapse of the textile industry in the neighbouring country, leaving many jobless there. He stated that the economy of Bangladesh has collapsed due to unrest, and the majority of the community people were more affected than the minority section. "So far, we have arrested around 1,000 Bangladeshi people in the last few months. They were pushed back immediately after their arrest," said the Chief Minister. He also attributed the illegal infiltration to incentives offered by a few textile industry owners in India.

39 arrests made in Assam for remarks ‘defending Pakistan' after Pahalgam attack

A total of 39 arrests have been made in Assam for "defending Pakistan" in the aftermath of the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The total number went up to 39 after two more persons were arrested from Hojai and South Salmara-Mankachar districts on Saturday. "#Update on crackdown against traitors for defending Pakistan on Indian soil - 22.00 hrs | 03 May. Mistaqul Alom arrested by @Hojai_Police, Jahirul Islam arrested by @SSalmaraPolice. A total of 39 Anti Nationals put behind bars till now," Sarma posted on X. The Assam chief minister has repeatedly stated that his government will not tolerate any remarks in support or defence of Pakistan in connection with the Pahalgam terror attack. Earlier, the opposition's AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam was also arrested on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan and its complicity in the terror incident. Sarma had defended the MLA's arrest, saying that it was justified because of his alleged pre-Pakistan statements. On Friday, Sarma warned those raising the 'Pakistan zindabad' slogan amid the rising tensions between the two neighbouring nations following the Pahalgam attack and threatened to break their legs. Addressing a campaign rally for the panchayat elections, the CM appealed to the people to pray and give strength to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Army so that Pakistani terrorists can be brought to justice across the world. Just a day after the April 22 terror attack in the valley, the Assam CM had expressed confidence in PM Modi's leadership and said that the nation will respond to the incident. "Together, we will hold Pakistan accountable and Pakistan will get the appropriate punishment for this incident," he stated. He had also called for vigilance against any Pakistani elements within the nation, highlighting the need for Hindu unity. He noted that the attackers in Pahalgam allegedly targeted victims based solely on their Hindu identity.
