Container truck crash causes 7km jam on PLUS near Menora Tunnel

IPOH: A container truck accident at KM 256.7 on the northbound North-South Expressway (PLUS) caused a seven-kilometre traffic jam near Menora Tunnel and Kuala Kangsar exit. PLUS Traffic confirmed all lanes were blocked as of 2.16 pm, with contraflow traffic activated from KM 257.3 to KM 256.2. Northbound vehicles were diverted at Ipoh South Toll Plaza, with a U-turn arrangement at Menora Tunnel. Congestion spread to both directions, worsening travel conditions for motorists. The incident was first reported at 12.12 pm, leaving traffic at a standstill for hours. Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the accident involved a detergent-loaded trailer that skidded and blocked the road at 12.06 pm. A 39-year-old male passenger suffered serious injuries and was rescued by passersby before being handed to Health Ministry personnel. 'The rescue operation used the Systematic Approach to Rescue Entrapped Victims (SAVER) system,' Sabarodzi said. After PLUS cleared the trailer, firefighters removed debris to reopen the road. Operations were under control by 1 pm and fully completed by 1.44 pm. - Bernama

Two dead in North-South expressway trailer crash near Sungkai

PETALING JAYA: A devastating road accident on the North-South Expressway near Sungkai has resulted in two fatalities and left two others hospitalized following a collision between commercial vehicles. The tragedy occurred at KM372.1 of the southbound carriageway when a 10-tonne truck transporting eggs crashed into the rear of a stationary cement-laden trailer, according to Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad. Emergency services received the distress call at noon and rushed to the scene where they discovered four occupants in the egg delivery vehicle. According to New Straits Times, the impact proved fatal for two male passengers in their twenties, who were thrown from the truck and declared dead by medical personnel at the accident site. The remaining two victims, aged in their thirties and forties, sustained minor injuries and received immediate medical attention before being transported to hospital by emergency responders. Sabarodzi explained that rescue teams implemented the SAVER (Self-Adaptive Vehicle Extinguishing and Rescue) protocol upon arrival, prioritizing urgent medical care for the injured victims while securing the accident scene. The deceased were subsequently handed over to police for investigation procedures, while authorities coordinated traffic management and road clearance operations. A seven-member fire crew from Slim River Fire and Rescue Station concluded their emergency response operations by 1:50pm. The accident caused significant traffic disruption, with PLUS Malaysia reporting 15-kilometer congestion following the collision. By 2:22pm, cleanup efforts remained ongoing, though authorities had reopened the middle lane to ease traffic flow.

Gunung Semanggol bush fires extinguished after 23 hectares razed

GUNUNG SEMANGGOL: Firefighters successfully brought under control a bush fire that destroyed 23.47 hectares in Kg Tersusun Tebuk Panchor, Gunung Semanggol, Bagan Serai. The blaze, which started on Thursday, was contained after a two-day operation involving ground and aerial firefighting efforts. Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad confirmed that 22.66 hectares had been fully extinguished, while 0.8 hectares remained ablaze. Ground teams used mechanical and transport pumps with a 1,000-foot hose, sourcing water from nearby hydrants. The operation was divided into four sectors, with six to seven personnel assigned to each. The Air Unit assisted with an AW 139 aircraft, conducting 20 water bombings. Challenges included navigating high-voltage electrical lines and shallow water sources, which caused mud to enter the water bucket. Firefighting efforts paused at 7 pm today and will resume tomorrow with additional personnel and logistics. Sabarodzi stated, 'Ground attacks and water bombing will ensure remaining embers are fully extinguished.' The fire, attributed to prolonged hot weather, last occurred in the area in 2023. - Bernama

Ice cream maker loses entire stock in blaze

Up in smoke: Firefighters trying to put out a fire that engulfed an ice cream factory at the Jelapang industrial area in Perak. IPOH: A popular ice cream producer, which has served local folk for four decades, lost all its stock when a huge fire broke out at its factory. 'Our entire cold room warehouse and ice cream stock had been lost to the flames. 'It will take us a few months to rebuild what was lost,' Wonderful Creamery said in a Facebook post. Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the damage to the factory, located at the Jelapang industrial area, was estimated at about 80%. The fire broke out at about 11.50pm on Wednesday. It was put out by 4.20am. 'When our fire engine arrived, we found the fire already engulfing the warehouse used to store ice cream, equipment and packaging. 'We were informed by the factory owner that a diesel tanker and two ammonia tanks in the premises were on fire,' he said in a statement yesterday. He said that a hazardous materials team conducted a test to check whether there was leakage to the tanks and found none. 'We also ensure all valves and compressors have been fully shut,' he added. Sabarodzi said firemen had detected some ammonia gas leakage from some freezer equipment but the matter had been resolved. 'The valves and compressors were shut off. 'We conducted a water curtain exercise to dilute the ammonia gas that has been vaporised. 'The hazardous materials team is closely monitoring the situation to ensure no further pollution,' he added. He said the operation involved firemen from the Ipoh, Meru Raya, Simpang Pulai and Pasir Puteh stations. 'Once the fire had been controlled, we then continued to ensure there were no more embers from the wreckage,' he added. According to Wonderful Creamery's website, it began operating in 1983, producing ice cream in various forms such as sticks, cups, cones, tubs and wafers. 'What the fire couldn't take away is our spirit, and your support, which means the world to us right now. 'We promise to return, stronger, kinder and even more committed to spreading joy – one ice-cream at a time,' it said in its Facebook post.
