Delhi govt to renovate 50,000 EWS houses for slum residents

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta and urban development minister Ashish Sood on Saturday inspected EWS (economically weaker sections) flats in Sultanpuri, north-west Delhi to review their maintenance, current condition, and potential for allotting them to slum dwellers. Gupta has announced that the government will renovate 50,000 old and dilapidated flats built for EWS over the past few decades and allot them to slum dwellers A DUSIB block of flats in Sultanpuri that chief minister Rekha Gupta inspected on Saturday. (ANI) The inspections were carried out a day after Gupta directed all government departments, the Indian Railways, and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) that no slum dwellings should be demolished in the city, and promised that all future removals, if unavoidable, would be accompanied by advance rehabilitation. 'Due to the indifference and malicious policies of previous governments, these flats, ready since 2011, remained deserted for years. Despite spending crores of rupees, they were not handed over to slum dwellers. Drawing inspiration from the resolve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' our government is now renovating 50,000 such flats. Electricity, water, toilets, sewer, and parks will be provided here. Our goal is to ensure that the slum dwellers of Delhi receive a safe, clean, and dignified life,' Gupta said after the inspection. In Sultanpuri, 1,060 EWS flats with F+4 structure for slum dwellers were constructed in 2016. The project is located at Site No. A-3, near C-Block, Sultanpuri. The total project area is 27,720sqm, while the carpet area of each unit is fixed at 25sqm. The layout of these houses includes one living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, toilet, and balcony. The approved cost was ₹52.81 crore, which later escalated to ₹67.84 crore. The per-unit cost, according to the approved amount, was ₹4.98 lakh, and according to the revised cost, is ₹6.40 lakh. The tender cost of the project was set at ₹51.72 crore, while the total expenditure reached ₹63.83 crore. The construction of the project was completed on March 31, 2016, delivering a total of 1,060 houses. Gupta said a similar situation exists with another 50,000 flats built in Delhi's outer areas, many of which have deteriorated so severely that substantial funds will be required to make them habitable. Treating this as a matter of the poor's rights, the Delhi government is working with complete commitment to ensure every slum dweller has access to safe, dignified, and well-equipped housing. The central government has already sanctioned approximately ₹732 crore to repair thousands of these flats. 'Our government is committed to ensuring dignified housing and a better life for slum dwellers. The Delhi government is also preparing a comprehensive strategy to meet the demand for 1 million houses. These efforts are fully aligned with Modi's resolve of providing housing for every poor person,' Gupta said. During the inspection, Gupta directed officials who accompanied her to prioritise immediate repair of salvageable flats and reconstruct those beyond repair. 'In the first phase we aim to operationalise 50,000 flats for resettlement while a comprehensive strategy is being finalised to address the projected need for 1 million houses in the future,' said Gupta. Sood said that DUSIB (Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board) flats in Sultanpuri had long stood as a symbol of neglect and political apathy. 'Despite investing crores of rupees, 50,000 flats remained abandoned, while hundreds of thousands of people continued to live in inhumane conditions in slums. Our government has resolved to redevelop these flats and ensure the availability of all essential facilities — water, electricity, sewerage, bathing spaces, toilets, parks, and safety. The Delhi government is committed to ensuring that no slum-dweller is forced to live an insecure, undignified, or unhealthy life anymore,' said Sood. An official said under the government's slum relocation and rehabilitation policy, the in-situ rehabilitation requires that eligible slum dwellers be offered alternative housing on the same land or within a 5km radius of their existing settlements. Commenting on the situation, the Congress said that the Prime Minister falsely promised the slum dwellers about providing flats. 'Since coming to power the BJP government in Delhi has demolished several slums, leaving many people homeless. To understand the pain and suffering of those troubled by the BJP's demolition drive, Rahul Gandhi reached out to the slum areas to understand their issues and raised them in Parliament. The BJP government, under continuous pressure from Delhi Congress's intervention, has promised to halt the demolitions,' Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said.

Direct dialogue between govt, public reps key to quality development: UP CM

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said his government has evolved a new culture in governance where plans don't remain confined to government files but bring about real changes to the lives of the people. UP CM Yogi Adityanath was presiding over a high-level review meeting with officers and public representatives from Ayodhya and Devipatan divisions on July 26. (HT file) 'It should be a game changer in people's lives,' he said while presiding over a high-level review meeting with officers and public representatives from Ayodhya and Devipatan divisions here. He said schemes should deliver tangible results and directed officials to implement this dialogue model across the state so that the vision of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' and 'Sabka Vishwas' is reflected in every plan and project. Public representatives and senior officials of the PWD, tourism and culture department from both divisions took part in the meeting aimed at establishing a direct communication with the representatives to ensure the pace and quality of development works align with their priorities and the expectations of the people. Yogi stressed the need for strong coordination to align development works with public expectations. He said the state government is ensuring separate financial support for municipal bodies and driving holistic urban development through the CM Grid Scheme. He directed officials to involve local representatives in project reviews, ensure transparency and incorporate their suggestions to strengthen accountability. The CM laid emphasis on prioritising development in newly urbanised rural areas within municipal limits. He directed that essential infrastructure—such as drinking water, drainage, and roads—must be completed swiftly to ensure urban-level amenities without compromising the villages' identity. The CM also directed that district headquarters be connected with four-lane roads and block headquarters with at least two-lane roads at the earliest. He asked all departments to identify accident-prone spots and fix them immediately through coordinated efforts. Yogi said the state government has undertaken a landmark step to upgrade road infrastructure by increasing the width of state roads from 3.5 to 5 metres. He said this move will enhance traffic safety, improve emergency response times, and boost connectivity across urban and rural areas. He directed the tourism and culture department to identify and develop at least one tourist site in every assembly constituency. The CM said bridge construction projects are linked to the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti Yojana. This national model helps coordinate different infrastructure projects, ensuring faster execution of bridge works and better use of financial resources. He also said not just the public works department but all departments should consult public representatives while planning their projects. This will help address actual problems on the ground. He said approved projects must go through a swift tender process and foundation-laying ceremonies should be held post-monsoon with their participation to ensure faster execution and greater public accountability. Yogi called upon the public representatives to stay in constant touch with people in their areas, inform them about ongoing projects, and convey their issues to the government.

Intellectuals urged to lead BJP's push for power in Telangana

Hyderabad: Telangana State BJP President N. Ramchander Rao called on intellectuals to play a pivotal role in shaping political change, urging them to help bring the BJP into power in the next state assembly elections. Addressing a gathering of intellectuals in Kodad on the second day of his tour through the Nalgonda and Suryapet districts, on Tuesday, Rao emphasized the importance of leveraging experience, scholarship, and social engagement to build political momentum for a 'Viksit Telangana.' Rao asserted that intellectuals possess the moral and analytical clarity needed to inform the public, raise awareness, and counter misinformation. He encouraged members of the Intellectuals Forum to actively educate citizens on policy issues and governance, and to foster informed democratic participation in favor of the BJP. In a scathing critique of the Congress-led state government, Rao accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of failing to deliver on electoral promises even after 18 months in office. He cited the party's much-publicized 'nine guarantees' as impractical and misleading, adding that the promises had deepened public debt and eroded trust. Rao also highlighted the sluggish pace of investigations into alleged corruption and financial irregularities involving leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Suggesting a possible understanding between Congress and BRS, he claimed the investigative inertia pointed to political collusion. Celebrating national accomplishments, Rao praised the 11-year tenure of the Narendra Modi-led central government, stating that India has seen unprecedented development across all sectors. He credited the government's 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' mission for uplifting marginalized communities and transforming India into a rising global power. The efficient delivery of basic services and infrastructure development were highlighted as key achievements of the BJP's governance model. On the second day of his two-district tour, Rao began with a visit to a temple in his native village, Nallabandagudem, followed by a trip to Saibaba temple before reaching Kodad. He was received with enthusiasm by farmers, members of the BJP Kisan Morcha, and party cadres. The warm reception featured chants, garlands, and spirited participation from local leaders and supporters. During the visit, Rao also paid tribute to Telangana statehood martyr Srikanth Chari by garlanding his statue, underscoring the party's continued reverence for those who laid down their lives and stood as the foundation for state formation. He reiterated the BJP's commitment to honor the sacrifices made during the Telangana movement. The visit and meeting concluded with the new BJP state reiterating that the party's line of intellectual engagement is central to political renewal. With an eye on the future, Rao urged thoughtful participation and civic responsibility to support the BJP's goal of establishing development-focused, accountable governance in Telangana during this two-day visit.

India Under PM Modi: 11 Years of Good Governance

Last Updated: The government's focus on inclusive growth through 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' and self-reliance through Aatmanirbhar Bharat will continue to shape India's trajectory June 9, 2025, marks the completion of 11 years of governance under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under his leadership, the country has made substantial progress in economic development, social progress, and has strengthened its position as a key global player. In the past 11 years, India's economy has expanded considerably. When PM Modi took office in 2014, the GDP per capita (based on purchasing power parity) was around $5,000, and today it has increased to over $12,000, a 240 per cent rise. The International Monetary Fund projects a 6.2 per cent growth rate for India in the FY 2025-26, higher than China's 4 per cent, US' 1.8 per cent, Japan's 0.6 per cent and the UK's 1.1 per cent, making India the fastest-growing major economy in the world. India has overtaken Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy, with a GDP exceeding $4 trillion. It is to the dynamic leadership of PM Modi that today India's economy has doubled from $2.1 trillion in 2015 to $4.3 trillion in 2025, a 105 per cent growth in mere 10 years. This growth wouldn't have been possible, without major policy changes like the Goods and Services Tax, implemented in 2017. The gross GST revenue collected in the FY 2024- 25 was over Rs 22.08 lakh crore, of which the Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST) was Rs 4.13 lakh crore, the State Goods and Service Tax (SGST) was Rs 5.16 lakh crore, and the Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST) was Rs 11.25 lakh crore. The 'Make in India" initiative, launched in 2014, is starting to showcase its potential and success. For instance, Apple vendors nearly doubled exports of iPhones from India from Rs 85,000 crore in FY23- 24 to Rs 1.5 lakh crore in FY 24-25. The production-linked incentive scheme, offering $24 billion in incentives since November 2023, supports sectors like electronics and drones. India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has overtaken Visa in daily transaction volume. On June 1, UPI processed 64.4 crore transactions, followed by over 65 crore on June 2. In contrast, Visa's average daily transaction volume in the financial year 2024 stood at 63.9 crore. Digital payments via UPI are projected to reach $1 trillion by FY26, growing at 40- 50 per cent annually. Infrastructure development has accelerated, with 36 km of highways built daily compared to only 8-11 km under UPA, and 100 per cent rural electrification has been achieved. In this period, foreign direct investment rose from $36 billion in 2013-14 to $709.84 billion over the decade, and India's exports jumped from $318 billion to $825 billion. Under the 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas" philosophy championed by PM Modi, social welfare programmes have expanded significantly. The Aadhaar system, covering 99 per cent of adults, enables direct benefit transfers, reducing subsidy leakages, with $34 trillion transferred using the Jan Dhan scheme. Rural development includes building 12 crore toilets, and providing tap water to over 15 crore households with eight states and three UTs having achieved 100 per cent water coverage in January 2025 itself. The Ujjwala scheme distributed 10 crore gas connections, and Ayushman Bharat issued 37 crore health cards. Food subsidies increased nearly fivefold since 2019, supporting access to affordable grains. Over 10 crore farmers have received Rs 3.75 lakh crore in financial support. Together these and other measures have ensured that India has significantly reduced our extreme poverty rate, from 27.1 per cent in 2011-12 to only 5.3 per cent in 2022-23, as revealed by the latest World Bank data. This means, under the inclusive leadership of PM Modi, 27 crore individuals were lifted out of extreme poverty in the past 11 years. Another critical aspect in which India has made substantial advancements is in the defence sector. India's defence exports have grown from Rs 1,941 crore in 2014 to Rs 23,662 crore in 2024, reflecting a gradual shift from 'defence buyer" to 'defence exporter". Under PM Modi, India is pushing for military modernisation with focus on aatmanirbharta (self-reliance). In the coming decade, the defence sector is set to become a major contributor to our economic growth. Over the past 11 years, India has achieved robust economic growth despite global challenges such as Covid-19 pandemic, war between Russia and Ukraine disturbing the global economic scenario, and the recent skirmish with Pakistan. India has made significant progress in GDP growth, social welfare expansion, infrastructure and industrial development, and defence modernisation, including increased exports. These advancements are gaining international recognition. The government's focus on inclusive growth through 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikash" and self-reliance through 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat" will continue to shape India's trajectory as we collectively aim for a $7 trillion economy by 2030, and a 'Vikshit Bharat" status by 2047. Let us all work together to realise this goal. Raju Bista is the Member of Parliament from Darjeeling, and BJP national spokesperson.
