Nagpur: In a transformative step to promote digital literacy among students at the schools run by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), a new initiative — Wings Fly High-Mobile Computer Education Bus Lab — was launched at Pardi Marathi Upper Primary School on Tuesday. Inaugurated by NMC additional commissioner Vaishnavi B, the initiative aims to bring computer education to students of NMC-run schools, fostering an interest in technology and equipping them for a brighter future. The mobile computer lab, a collaborative CSR initiative by Elkem ASA, and Sahyadri Foundation, Nagpur, is designed to provide free computer education to students in NMC schools. The launch event was attended NMC education officer Sadhana Sayam, Elkem plant head Kumar Kislay, senior manager Sanjay Bedekar, Sahyadri Foundation director Devendra Kshirsagar, Wings Fly High project manager Nitesh Nagdeve, the school's headmistress, teachers, and students. The project aims to offer hands-on computer training through a fully equipped mobile lab to students of Classes 5 to 8. For the next three months, the bus will visit NMC upper primary schools with high student enrolment, ensuring access to quality digital education. This initiative marks a significant milestone in bridging the digital divide and empowering young learners in Nagpur's municipal schools.

Nagpur: Two schools run by (NMC), selected for the central govt's ambitious 'PM Shri' Schools (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) scheme, have shown significant progress in overall student performance and attendance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Out of the total 114 NMC-run schools, two girls stood first among all the Hindi-medium schools, while the overall pass percentage crossed 90% in these schools. Due to proper guidance from teachers, the number of students scoring above 85% also increased. Sanjay Nagar Hindi School and Lal Bahadur Shastri Hindi School are now covered under this scheme and are receiving funds from the govt for educational and infrastructural transformation to provide students with quality education. Lal Bahadur was selected under PM Shri in 2023 and showed remarkable progress, with its enrolments reaching 1,500. Last year, Sanjay Nagar was also selected based on certain parameters, and its enrolment reached 300. NMC education officer Sadhana Sayam told TOI that these schools now offer private-like facilities and teaching standards. "The first phase of disbursal of Rs4,000 to girl students with 80% or more attendance has already been done. This will further motivate kids and parents from poor homes," she said. In 2022, the central govt launched the ' Scheme' nationwide to modernise govt schools and improve education for children. Schools developed under the PM Shri Schools Scheme are distinct from regular schools. Selected schools across the country have been enriched with modern educational facilities and developed as model schools. These two schools offer excellent educational facilities, modern technology, and quality education. Under this scheme, digital learning resources, teacher training, and improved classroom facilities have been provided. Additionally, laboratory arrangements have been made, and students are given practical knowledge of various subjects. Separate arrangements have been made for visually impaired students. Earlier, Sanjay Nagar School was selected under 'Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Ideal School' by the Maharashtra govt in 2020. Initiatives under 'PM Shri Schools' include various programs like field visits, lectures, and guidance by renowned national and international experts, yoga and sports training, health camps, development as green schools, creating vegetable and medicinal gardens, waste management education, vermicomposting, planting trees and greenery in school premises, cleanliness drives, allowances for children with special needs, home guidance, provision of materials and equipment, reading allowances for partially blind students, attendance allowances to increase girls' education, distribution of sanitary pads, programs for adolescent girls, and forming a young editorial student writing board.
