Mayor hails sanitation workers for making Vizag a clean city
Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao on Saturday commended sanitation workers and said that it is their collective effort that won the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) the first position in the special category of 'Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher' at the National level. He was speaking during the 'Swachh Awards' felicitation ceremony organised by the Municipal Corporation at AU Convention Centre on the Beach Road on Saturday (July 26). The Mayor said that the GVMC has about 5,800 sanitation workers, and with development abuzz, more sanitation workers are needed to be recruited. He thanked the sanitation workers, GVMC officials, city residents, and representatives of voluntary organisations for their contribution towards making Vizag a clean city and achieving this award. MP Sribharat emphasised the importance of adopting advanced technology to make city even more beautiful. He said that the corporation has been implementing the 'Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra' programme initiated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu as a movement with public participation. He pointed out that without public awareness, even the best efforts of sanitation workers would be in vain. He also highlighted the Chief Minister's efforts to bring more companies to the city with the goal of developing Visakhapatnam into the economic capital of the State. District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad stressed on the need for maintaining cleanliness in the city, and said that investors evaluate sanitation, environment, traffic, roads, and water supply before committing investments in the city. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg shared a personal observation of women sanitation workers cleaning at Nehru Bazaar at midnight, leaving their families behind for the city's cleanliness. Appreciating their services, the Commissioner promised to address issues such as stray dog menace faced by workers immediately. All the representatives along with MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu, Deputy Mayor Dalli Govinda Raju, TDP President Gandi Babji, and DCCB Chairman Kona Tatarau felicitated the sanitation workers, secretaries, UGD staff, several NGOs, and sanitary inspectors with Swachh Awards, certificates of appreciation, and mementos. They also visited stalls set up by NGOs promoting the use of eco-friendly products.

Funds invested in devpt is public money, must be used wisely: CM
Gorakhpur: Chief Minister on Wednesday said the money spent on development comes from the people's taxes and hence every penny should be used wisely. "There should be no compromise on quality in development projects. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ensuring the proper use of public funds for development should be our collective goal," the CM said while unveiling and laying the foundation stone of 177 development projects worth ₹253 crore in Gorakhpur. Addressing a large gathering at the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation, the CM inaugurated the state's first Urban Flood Management Cell. Equipped with an automated early warning system, the cell monitors 110 key drainage points and sends real-time alerts during flood risks or pump failures. During the event he also honoured sanitation workers and councillors for their role in improving the city's ranking in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. Gorakhpur climbed from 74th position to 4th place (for cities with populations between 3 and 10 lakh) and secured 3rd position in the 'Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher' category. He praised locals for their cooperation in civic improvements. "Gorakhpur has transformed from a city plagued by mosquitoes, chaos and waterlogging into a clean, efficient and growing urban hub. This transformation was possible due to strong civic participation, teamwork and a vision aligned with PM Modi's Viksit Bharat 2047 mission," he said. Lok Sabha MP Ravi Kishan said CM Yogi's leadership and work ethic serve as an inspiration to all public representatives. "Under his guidance, not only Gorakhpur but the entire state is witnessing a wave of development," he said. Mayor Manglesh Srivastava lauded the CM's support and reaffirmed the municipal body's commitment to pushing Gorakhpur into the top three cleanest cities in India. A financial grant of Rs 1 lakh was handed to the son of a sanitation worker from the Safaimitra Welfare Fund. The CM also flagged off 12 new sanitation vehicles.

And the award for India's Cleanest State in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 goes to….
Recently Swachh Survekshan crowned Uttar Pradesh as the cleanest state in India. It's a big accolade for the state under the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25, which was conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The ceremony was held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu where Uttar Pradesh outshone other states in terms of cleanliness, sanitation, and urban hygiene. In addition to this, Uttar Pradesh's capital, Lucknow was ranked third as the cleanest city in India (populations over 1 million). The number one spot was taken by Indore followed by Surat. Lucknow also received the rare honour of being certified as a 7-Star Garbage Free City This is a great award which shows the city's excellence in solid waste management and cleanliness standards. Besides Lucknow, Prayagraj was awarded with the prestigious title of the 'Cleanest Ganga City', a title that shows the city's efforts in keeping the river pollution-free. Gorakhpur, on the other hand, also earned a 5-Star Garbage Free City certification and was awarded as a Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher, acknowledging the safety. Agra, home to the white marble beauty the Taj Mahal, was also on the list of the top 30 cleanest cities in India. It also got the title of the 'Emerging Clean City of Uttar Pradesh'. The state's smaller cities also shocked the country. Moradabad ranked 10th in the category of cities with a population between 3–10 lakh and Bijnor secured 29th place in the 'Cleanest Ganga Towns' list. This remarkable performance highlights the strides Uttar Pradesh has taken in urban sanitation, public awareness, and waste management. For tourists, this not only assures cleaner surroundings but also enhances the overall experience when visiting cultural hotspots like Varanasi, Lucknow, Agra, and Prayagraj. As India moves towards its vision of a garbage-free future, pollution free and cleaner and greener, Uttar Pradesh's tremendous achievements serve as an inspiring example of how large states can lead by example in creating cleaner, beautiful and healthier cities.
