Mayor hails sanitation workers for making Vizag a clean city
He was speaking during the 'Swachh Awards' felicitation ceremony organised by the Municipal Corporation at AU Convention Centre on the Beach Road on Saturday (July 26).
The Mayor said that the GVMC has about 5,800 sanitation workers, and with development abuzz, more sanitation workers are needed to be recruited. He thanked the sanitation workers, GVMC officials, city residents, and representatives of voluntary organisations for their contribution towards making Vizag a clean city and achieving this award.
MP Sribharat emphasised the importance of adopting advanced technology to make city even more beautiful. He said that the corporation has been implementing the 'Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra' programme initiated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu as a movement with public participation.
He pointed out that without public awareness, even the best efforts of sanitation workers would be in vain. He also highlighted the Chief Minister's efforts to bring more companies to the city with the goal of developing Visakhapatnam into the economic capital of the State.
District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad stressed on the need for maintaining cleanliness in the city, and said that investors evaluate sanitation, environment, traffic, roads, and water supply before committing investments in the city.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg shared a personal observation of women sanitation workers cleaning at Nehru Bazaar at midnight, leaving their families behind for the city's cleanliness. Appreciating their services, the Commissioner promised to address issues such as stray dog menace faced by workers immediately.
All the representatives along with MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu, Deputy Mayor Dalli Govinda Raju, TDP President Gandi Babji, and DCCB Chairman Kona Tatarau felicitated the sanitation workers, secretaries, UGD staff, several NGOs, and sanitary inspectors with Swachh Awards, certificates of appreciation, and mementos. They also visited stalls set up by NGOs promoting the use of eco-friendly products.

Shiromani Akali Dal's Mohali district president Parvinder Singh Sohana has launched a fierce attack on Mohali Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu and local MLA Kulwant Singh, blaming their 'political greed' for the decline of the city. Addressing a press conference Wednesday, Sohana alleged that 'both these leaders unite when it serves their interests, and at other times, they cross swords to fool the public'. He said that they have destroyed Mohali by prioritising their own political gains over public welfare. With the Municipal Corporation elections just months away, Sohana accused Mayor Sidhu of suddenly pretending to care about civic problems that he ignored for over four years. 'After four and a half years of corruption that financially ruined Mohali MC, the mayor now wants to act like a savior,' said Sohana, warning that residents will not fall for such tactics again. He questioned the Mayor's recent demand of Rs 600 crore from the government, asking, 'Where is the estimate for this? Where is it supposed to be spent? When was this discussed in any MC meeting?' Turning his criticism toward MLA Kulwant Singh, Sohana said the legislator has ignored the city's core issues. 'For the past one year and a half, garbage management has failed completely. People are falling sick, but the MLA is only busy with politics,' he stated. He also criticised Kulwant Singh's claim of using Samgoli village as a garbage dump. 'Will people not be living there? Is it right to dump our city's waste into someone else's backyard?' asked Sohana. On the issue of rainwater flooding, Sohana said both the Mayor and MLA were equally responsible. 'Every year, citizens suffer massive losses, but these two only play blame games while people become victims of their political rivalry.' He emphasised that the Shiromani Akali Dal government had earlier invested Rs 2,500 crore in developing Mohali's infrastructure, yet 'not even one-fifth of that has been brought in by the current Mayor and MLA, and whatever came wasn't spent properly'. Demanding accountability, Sohana said, 'Instead of troubling Mohali residents with their political enmity, these two leaders should either work sincerely for the betterment of the city or step down from their positions, owning up to their moral responsibility.'

Padma Reddy surprise win jolts NDA in GVMC polls
Visakhapatnam: YSRCP corporator Sadi Padmavati (Padma Reddy) on Wednesday won a seat in the GVMC standing committee elections, securing 50 votes. This came as a surprise to the NDA alliance, as the YSRCP currently holds a strength of only 32 corporators in the council, while the NDA possesses sufficient numerical strength to capture all 10 seats. NDA leaders believe there was evident crossvoting in favour of Padma Reddy. GVMC commissioner Ketan Garg announced the results in the evening. A total of 20 candidates (10 from the NDA and 10 from the YSRCP) contested the elections, with 92 corporators exercising their voting rights. The winning members and their vote counts are: Neelima Konathala (58 votes), Gankala Kavitha (57), Dadi Venkata Rameshwar Rao (57), Molli Hemalatha (57), Senapati Vasantha (54), Gedela (Bantubilli) Lavanya (53), Madamshetty Chinatalli (52), Raparthi Triveni Varaprasada Rao (52), Molli Muthyalu (51), and Sadi Padmavati (50). Following the results, YSRCP Visakhapatnam district president KK Raju said that Padmavati's victory is a "slap in the face" to the NDA alliance. He remarked that despite the TDP-led alliance holding a majority, some of their own corporators turned against them to support a YSRCP candidate, exposing deep dissatisfaction within their ranks. Raju recalled how the alliance had previously usurped the mayor's post through allegedly undemocratic means, including the removal of a BC woman mayor supported by the YSRCP.

All Set for GVMC standing committee elections on August 6 in Visakhapatnam
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has made elaborate arrangements for the standing committee elections, which are scheduled to be held on August 6 (Wednesday). With just hours remaining for polling, both the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the NDA alliance are holding last-minute strategy sessions to prevent cross-voting and secure a majority for their candidates. GVMC Additional Commissioners D.V. Ramana Murthy and S.S. Varma on Tuesday conducted a sensitisation session for all party corporators at the GVMC Main Office, in the presence of floor leaders. The session focused on the election process for selecting the 10-member standing committee. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg has directed that the election be conducted transparently, with no scope for untoward incidents. Voting will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the GVMC Conference Hall. Corporators must present valid photo ID to obtain voter slips. Due to disruptions during previous elections, items such as pens, digital watches, mobile phones, and electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the polling area. Each corporator is required to cast exactly 10 votes, and any ballot with more than 10 votes will be deemed invalid. Contesting candidates must report at 9:45 a.m. for sealing of ballot boxes and return at 2:05 p.m. for the final sealing. Counting will be conducted in the candidates' presence, followed by the announcement of results. The run-up to the election saw political turbulence. CPI(M) Corporator B. Ganga Rao (Ward 78) declared he would boycott the election, accusing both YSRCP and NDA of fostering corruption. Jana Sena Party (JSP) Corporator P.L.V.N. Murthy (Ward 22) also announced a boycott, alleging that the TDP had failed to honour the NDA's seat-sharing arrangement, which reportedly allocated six seats to the TDP, three to the JSP, and one to the BJP. No JSP candidates filed nominations, and one YSRCP-turned-JSP supporter who had filed withdrew later. As a result, the contest will see 10 YSRCP candidates pitted against nine TDP corporators and one BJP corporator from the NDA.
