Civil society members move DGP, collector over women safety
Cuttack: Civil society members submitted a memorandum on safety of women to the director general of police and the district collector on Friday. The memorandum highlights the increasing crimes against women and the deteriorating safety conditions in the region. Dipayan Pattnaik, a member of United Nations India pointed out the alleged misuse of funds from the Rs 137-crore Safe City Project, which was sanctioned following the Nirbhaya incident. "CCTV cameras were supposed to be installed across the twin cities, and women's help desks set up in every police station. However, there is little visible impact on the ground," he said. The memorandum also criticized the police response in cases involving women. "When women go to a local police station, they are often redirected to the women's police station, even if it's far away. PCR vans arrive, but local police do not respond promptly or take action," Pattnaik added. Social activist Abhaya Pattnayak expressed concern over the open consumption of drugs near the DCP office in Cuttack, turning these areas into hotspots for anti-social activities. "Similar scenes are visible in several open spaces across Bhubaneswar too. This reflects a serious lapse in enforcement and sends a dangerous message about lawlessness in public spaces," he said. Senior lawyer Jyoti Ranjan Das noted the cessation of regular meetings with local police officers, which previously addressed public safety, traffic, and crime issues. "This was suddenly stopped by the commissionerate police," he said. Experts are calling for the immediate resumption of Amma Police Samiti meetings, strict surveillance in crime-prone areas, increased deployment for traffic regulation, and speed limits of 30 kmph in city areas. "There should be zero tolerance for illegal gatherings and misuse of public spaces. Safe mobility is our right, especially for women and senior citizens," said Bibhudutta Khandayat Ray, a human rights activist. Collector (Cuttack) Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde said the administration would review implementation of the Safe City Project and work closely with police and local bodies to address the highlighted issues. "We have already informed the director general of police regarding the cooperation and will move further with police support," Shinde added.

Pakistan, Bangladesh Agree On Visa-Free Entry Of Officials: How It Affects India
New Delhi: Pakistan and Bangladesh have reached an agreement to allow visa-free entry for holders of diplomatic and official passports, a move that would be closely watched by India. The move signals a further thaw in bilateral ties, as both sides seek to rebuild relations frosty since the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. The decision on visa-free entry was announced on Wednesday after a high-level meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Lieutenant General (retired) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, in Dhaka, the state-run Radio Pakistan reported. During the meeting, the two sides also agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of internal security and police training. Chowdhury and Naqvi discussed increasing collaboration on anti-narcotics and anti-human trafficking. Views were also exchanged on joint counter-terrorism measures and exchange programmes between police academies of the two countries, the report said. Chowdhury called his Bangladesh visit extremely important to promote bilateral cooperation between Dhaka and Islamabad. He also thanked Naqvi for extending the offer of police training to Bangladeshi officials. Growing Pakistan-Bangladesh Ties Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have witnessed a marked improvement following the establishment of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka, with the two sides trying to reset ties. Yunus, the 84-year-old Nobel laureate, is a staunch opponent of Ms Hasina's policies, which were fundamentally pro-India and anti-Pakistan. Pakistan has formed a joint committee, to be headed by Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, to further boost cooperation with Bangladesh. A high-level Bangladeshi delegation is set to visit Islamabad soon to tour the Safe City Project and the National Police Academy. India Concerns The visa-free entry of Islamabad's officials to Dhaka could enable easier movement of Inter-Services Intelligence agents and other Pakistani spies in Bangladesh. New Delhi worries that a bigger presence of Pakistani officials in Bangladesh could lead to a resurgence of anti-India Islamist extremism in Bangladesh could target India and support insurgent groups in northeastern states.

Here's how to apply for new Ajrak design number plates online
The issue of registration for new number plate has taken Karachi by whirlwind, leaving people scrambling to obtain one for their vehicle as the traffic police have launched crackdown on the citizens commuting without Ajrak-style number plates. Sindh's Excise and Taxation minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla believes these number plates hold profound significance in a bid to make the city safer. He said the Sindh government began working on the Safe City Project in 2018, under which 12,000 surveillance cameras have been installed in the megalopolis. Talking to Business Recorder, Chawla stressed that unless vehicles and bikes were registered and properly transferred in the name of the rightful owner, crime in the city could not be effectively controlled. Describing the features of the new number plates, he said the plates included threads in the background, 3D holograms, and barcodes. 'They are also camera-readable, even at night,' he said, pointing towards CCTV camera's use in detecting a vehicle. The minister said plates made in the open market did not have the security features and could not be read by cameras, making them unacceptable under the new system. He stated that the Excise Department had launched three different coloured number plates: white plates for private vehicles and bikes, yellow plates for commercial vehicles, and green plates for government vehicles. Chawla mentioned that the fee for four wheeler vehicle number plates — whether government or commercial — was set at Rs2,450, while the fee for bike plates is Rs1,850. He said that the registration process was not limited to cars and bikes but those with trucks and dumpers could also apply. Following few steps you can register for a number plate online for your vehicle. Here's how to apply for registration for a vehicle's new Ajrak-style number plate in Sindh:
