Pakistan, Bangladesh Agree On Visa-Free Entry Of Officials: How It Affects India
Pakistan and Bangladesh have reached an agreement to allow visa-free entry for holders of diplomatic and official passports, a move that would be closely watched by India. The move signals a further thaw in bilateral ties, as both sides seek to rebuild relations frosty since the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
The decision on visa-free entry was announced on Wednesday after a high-level meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Lieutenant General (retired) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, in Dhaka, the state-run Radio Pakistan reported.
During the meeting, the two sides also agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of internal security and police training. Chowdhury and Naqvi discussed increasing collaboration on anti-narcotics and anti-human trafficking. Views were also exchanged on joint counter-terrorism measures and exchange programmes between police academies of the two countries, the report said.
Chowdhury called his Bangladesh visit extremely important to promote bilateral cooperation between Dhaka and Islamabad. He also thanked Naqvi for extending the offer of police training to Bangladeshi officials.
Growing Pakistan-Bangladesh Ties
Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have witnessed a marked improvement following the establishment of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka, with the two sides trying to reset ties. Yunus, the 84-year-old Nobel laureate, is a staunch opponent of Ms Hasina's policies, which were fundamentally pro-India and anti-Pakistan.
Pakistan has formed a joint committee, to be headed by Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, to further boost cooperation with Bangladesh. A high-level Bangladeshi delegation is set to visit Islamabad soon to tour the Safe City Project and the National Police Academy.
India Concerns
The visa-free entry of Islamabad's officials to Dhaka could enable easier movement of Inter-Services Intelligence agents and other Pakistani spies in Bangladesh. New Delhi worries that a bigger presence of Pakistani officials in Bangladesh could lead to a resurgence of anti-India Islamist extremism in Bangladesh could target India and support insurgent groups in northeastern states.

Terror funding: Special NIA court frames charges against Jamaat-e-Islami trio, trust
JAMMU: A special NIA court in Jammu framed charges against three Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), J&K, operatives and a trust on Tuesday, for allegedly raising and utilising funds to further the activities of the proscribed outfit in violation of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967. The accused are Amir Mohammad Shamsi from Rajouri's Rehtal; Abdul Hamid Ganai (alias Abdul Hamid Fayaz) from Shopian's Nadigam, and Pakistan-based Mushtaq Ahmad Mir (alias Mushtaq Ahmad Zargar) from Rajouri's Darhal. Rajouri-based organisation Al-Huda Educational Trust — an alleged front for JeI's illegal transactions — was named the fourth accused. JeI was first declared a banned organisation by Indian govt in Feb 28, 2019, for its activities against the security, integrity and sovereignty of the Union of India. Special NIA judge Sandeep Gandotra noted that while disclosure statements recorded before executive magistrates were inadmissible, independent evidence — including statements of trustees and local donors under CrPC Section 164 — substantiated the prosecution's case. CM to vigilantes: Protest encroachments lawfully
Guwahati: Amid rising vigilante activity in upper Assam, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday urged citizens to continue protesting against encroachers but by staying within the bounds of law and avoiding taking law into their own hands. Responding to recent calls by student and regional youth organisations asking Bangladesh-origin Muslims to leave districts such as Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, and Jorhat, Sarma said, "Nobody should take the law into their hands but protest and agitate against these issues." He emphasized that the government supports peaceful protests against illegal encroachments, warning that "the situation will turn worse if anyone attempts to harm the Assamese community." Referring to incidents during the recent eviction drive in Uriamghat (Golaghat district), Sarma said, "What was witnessed in the recent eviction drive at Uriamghat was shocking, and I am going to show some more videos in a few days, which is even more alarming." He alleged that encroachers had "illegally occupied thousands of bighas of land and converted it into fisheries." Highlighting the cultural significance of affected districts, Sarma said, "Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Sivasagar are historically significant places of the state, and if we do not raise our voice against such encroachments, then who will?"

Pakistan's Move To Deport Afghan Refugees By Sept 1 Raises Concern From UNHCR
According to Pakistan's Interior Ministry, over 1.3 million Afghan refugees currently hold PoR cards, which have historically allowed them to stay in Pakistan without a valid visa. However, in a statement released last week, the Ministry declared that all PoR cardholders would be considered unlawful residents following the expiration of their documents. Afghans who have fled to Pakistan over the past four decades are currently allowed to reside with PoR cards issued by Pakistani authorities. These cards were valid until June 30, 2025, and the government has refused to renew them anymore. The refugees will now be allowed a 25-day 'grace period" from August 4 to August 31, to return voluntarily to Afghanistan, according to Lateef-ur-Rehman, spokesperson for the Home and Tribal Affairs Department. In a letter dated August 4, the Interior Ministry instructed provincial chief secretaries, police chiefs, and other top bureaucratic officials to begin implementing the IFRP. The ministry also requested local authorities to submit comprehensive data on PoR cardholders to provincial, divisional, and district-level repatriation committees. As reported by PTI, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will assist in identifying and processing deportees.
