Three children drowned in pond

paderu (ASR District): In a heart-wrenching tragedy, three young boys drowned in a pond near Gangavalasa village of Guntaseema Panchayat in Dumburuguda mandal of Alluri Sitarama Raju district on Sunday. The deceased were identified as Korra Sushanth from Gangavalasa, and Gunta Bhanu Teja and Sai Kiran from Billaput village of Kothangi Panchayat. The three had reportedly gone for a swim in an MGNREGA-constructed pond located in front of the Jamalayya temple near the village. Reportedly all of them were below 15 years old. According to locals, the boys accidentally slipped into the deeper parts of the pond and drowned. Some locals rushed to rescue them but were unable to save the children in time. Tragically, Bhanu Teja and Sai Kiran had only arrived a week ago to spend their school vacation at their maternal uncle's home. The sudden loss of the three young lives has plunged the village into deep sorrow, with grieving families and relatives mourning the unimaginable loss. The incident has raised concerns over the safety of water bodies in rural areas and the lack of fencing or warning signs near ponds frequented by children. Authorities are expected to initiate an inquiry and discuss possible preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in future.

How one man reached for the sky from his classroom

Hyderabad: For T Sai Kiran , becoming a pilot was always his dream. Growing up, his fascination for aircraft led him to imagine himself in a cockpit one day. However, financial hurdles forced him to change course, although he never strayed far from aviation. After graduating with a BTech in Aeronautical Engineering from Hyderabad, Sai Kiran began his career as an assistant professor in 2011, teaching aeronautical engineering for nearly eight years. "Teaching was fulfilling, but deep down, I still wanted to be part of the action of the industry," said the 36-year-old. Undeterred, he enrolled on a certification course in airport operations at GMR Aero Academy in 2019. The course became a launchpad, and soon after, he landed a job with Air India SATS . Over the next three years, he worked his way up from the customer service department to the airline's website operations, finally becoming a turnaround coordinator and managing critical ramp-side functions such as aircraft handling, fuelling, boarding, and service coordination. His starting salary in the aviation industry was a modest Rs 2.8 lakh per annum. However, he persevered, combining his technical know-how with hands-on experience. His growing expertise eventually brought him back to GMR Aero Academy in 2022 — this time as a faculty member. Today, he teaches the same airport operations certification course that he once trained on, combining his passion for aviation with his talent for teaching. The result? A fulfilling career that brings together his two passions — and a salary that has more than quadrupled in just three years. "I couldn't become a pilot," he added, "but I found a different way to be close to the skies."

Neglect & poor maintenance turn NTR stadium in Kavadiguda into dump yard

Hyderabad: The once-prominent NTR Stadium in Kavadiguda, spread over 14 acres, has become a dumping ground, littered with construction debris and trash. What was historically a hub for sporting and public events now lies neglected, with refuse strewn across its residents, shopkeepers, and youngsters who frequent the area have expressed frustration over the stadium's deteriorating condition, claiming that the issue has persisted for several years. Rubbish has accumulated in all corners and along the boundaries, creating a public nuisance, especially for the youth who continue to use the space for recreational activities."Garbage has been piling up for years now. It's hard to even remember when it started. People treat it like a dump yard, and vehicles from outside regularly come here to offload waste," said Sai Kiran, a resident of the found the situation is further aggravated by open urination around the stadium boundaries, despite the presence of a Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) public toilet directly opposite the venue, near Dharna Chowk. Similipal to set up mini nurseries for endangered plants conservation

Bhubaneswar: The forest department's wildlife wing has decided to establish six mini nurseries dedicated to preserving endangered plant species in Similipal Tiger Reserve . These specialised facilities will focus on growing and nurturing threatened flora native to the landscape. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The initiative also aims to repopulate vacant and degraded forest areas within the reserve by transplanting these cultivated species. Recently, Similipal was accorded national park status. Sai Kiran, deputy director (North Similipal), said the nurseries are of different sizes, and endangered saplings, which grow naturally in the forest after their seeds fall on the ground, will be collected. "There are two ways to develop the nurseries. First, by collecting baby plants that grow naturally in the forest, and second, by collecting the seeds and nurturing them in nurseries until they become fit for plantation," he told TOI. A maximum of 3,000 saplings and a minimum of 1,000 will be grown during the four-year nursery programme. "There are trees that were broken with just the stump left. We will put the sapling on the stump so that the stump carries necessary food and helps the plant survive. In another way, some saplings will be planted afresh by digging the earth," he said. Endangered species like Ficus bengalensis are fit to be grown by planting them in dead stumps. Other endangered species are Careya arborea, Dillenia pentagyna, Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellirica, Pterocarpus marsupium, and Kydia calycina. "There are more than 40 endangered species that can be planted for their long-term conservation so that the uniqueness of the Similipal biosphere is restored," wildlife officials said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In 2015, Similipal authorities developed a natural cluster of rare species of plants into a research and tourist hub at Bhajam near Pithabata eco-tourism site. Then, the wildlife wing identified 25 to 30 species of trees, some of which are medicinal. "Research scholars and students of botany come to Similipal to study the nature of plants and their identification. Besides research scholars, tourists can also visit the site," officials said. At present, research scholars visit Gudugudia, where around 63 varieties of orchids are reared and preserved for research purposes.
