Three children drowned in pond

Hans India09-06-2025
paderu (ASR District): In a heart-wrenching tragedy, three young boys drowned in a pond near Gangavalasa village of Guntaseema Panchayat in Dumburuguda mandal of Alluri Sitarama Raju district on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Korra Sushanth from Gangavalasa, and Gunta Bhanu Teja and Sai Kiran from Billaput village of Kothangi Panchayat. The three had reportedly gone for a swim in an MGNREGA-constructed pond located in front of the Jamalayya temple near the village. Reportedly all of them were below 15 years old.
According to locals, the boys accidentally slipped into the deeper parts of the pond and drowned.
Some locals rushed to rescue them but were unable to save the children in time.
Tragically, Bhanu Teja and Sai Kiran had only arrived a week ago to spend their school vacation at their maternal uncle's home.
The sudden loss of the three young lives has plunged the village into deep sorrow, with grieving families and relatives mourning the unimaginable loss. The incident has raised concerns over the safety of water bodies in rural areas and the lack of fencing or warning signs near ponds frequented by children.
Authorities are expected to initiate an inquiry and discuss possible preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in future.

2 govt officials among 5 booked for misappropriating funds

Pilibhit: An FIR has been lodged against a panchayat secretary, a village development officer, the woman pradhan of Harkishanpur village, her husband and a woman rozgar sevak (contractual worker under MGNREGA scheme) for their alleged involvement in fraudulent transactions from the village development fund. The FIR was registered at Neuria police station on Monday evening following the order of the chief judicial magistrate. The complainant, Raju Lal (59), a resident of the same village, said he and other locals first reported the misappropriation of funds to the district magistrate in Nov last year. Following their complaint, district panchayat raj adhikari conducted an inquiry, which was completed around May this year, and confirmed financial irregularities worth Rs 1,32,165 in the excavation of two village ponds. According to the complaint, pradhan Reshamwati and her husband, Deepak Kumar, further misappropriated Rs 59,870 by showing purchase of a diesel pumping set for the village panchayat. Instead of buying new equipment, they passed off old machinery already in use by villagers as newly purchased. Raju also alleged that Reshamwati, in collusion with panchayat secretary Mewa Lal, village development officer Rakesh Kumar and rozgar sevak Mamta Devi made several fictitious payments under MGNREGA. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Lifetime of Bags, One Final Sale — Up to 70% Off HOPPBUY Shop Now Undo However, the inquiry officer did not include these transactions in his report. Despite confirmation of irregularities, the administration only ordered recovery of the misappropriated amount, without taking punitive action, Raju claimed. "After my written complaints to the local police and the SP were ignored, I approached the court, which directed the registration of the FIR," he said. Neuria SHO Subhash Mawi said, "All five accused have been charged under BNS sections 316(5) (criminal breach of trust) and 318(4) (cheating and fraudulently inducing a person to deliver property)." Centre moves SC against HC order on Bengal rural job scheme

Supreme Court of India KOLKATA: The Centre Monday moved Supreme Court challenging a Calcutta high court order directing it to resume the MGNREGA scheme in West Bengal from Aug 1. The apex court is likely to hear the plea this week. In June, the HC had directed the Centre to resume the rural employment programme in the state from Aug 1, saying the scheme could not be "put in cold storage for eternity". The scheme has been suspended in Bengal for nearly three years, with the Centre blocking the funds due to alleged irregularities and non-compliance with its directives. Refusing to buy the Centre's argument on fake job card holders, Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam had said, "A person who obtained wages illegally or under fictitious names could not go free and had to be dealt with firmly. But what about those who did the work genuinely? A line should be drawn and a cut-off date announced." TMC, however, used govt's own data to question its argument. Citing figures placed in the Lok Sabha, it alleged that 11,07,814 fake MGNREGS job cards were deleted across India between 2022 and 2025.
