Saiyed family buried together on 9th day of tragedy

Ahmedabad: Hundreds from the Khanpur neighbourhood in the walled city joined the Saiyed family on Saturday afternoon to bid a final farewell to four of its members. They parted with the family on June 12 on their journey to England, promising to meet again for another festival celebration. The Saiyed family came to India from England and was returning with their daughter after celebrating the festival of Eid-ul-Adha with family members. All four — Inayat Ali Saiyed, his wife Nafeesabanu, daughter Taskin, and son Vaqi Ali — became victims of a tragic plane crash a couple of hours after family members in Ahmedabad went to the airport for a sendoff. The Saiyed family, consisting of six brothers who live together in one building in the Khanpur area, waited for nine days before all of them were identified after the DNA match, allowing them to bury their dear ones. Inayat's eldest brother, Badesaab Saiyed, said that three bodies were identified two days ago, but Nafeesabanu's DNA matched on Saturday. "It was a feeling of our family members that we should bury all four members together, and therefore we waited for two more days," he said after returning from the burial at the Musa Suhag graveyard. Inayat and his wife lived in Wembley for 19 years. Their son, Vaqi, shifted to England a few years ago after completing his schooling. Taskin joined her parents in the UK to begin a new chapter in her life. She completed her MBBS from the NHL Medical College in Ahmedabad. Her uncle said that she cleared the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam conducted by the General Medical Council and became eligible to practice medicine in England. "She planned to pursue her postgraduation in the UK only. But she was supposed to join a hospital as a doctor there after 15 days. That is why she joined her parents," he said.

Advocates raise concerns after video appears to show ICE detain people outside immigration court

STERLING, Va. (DC News Now) — Video shared with DC News Now, taken by the advocacy group New Virginia Majority (NVM), appears to show U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents making arrests outside an immigration court in Loudoun County. Sofia Saiyed, a campaign coordinator with NVM, took one of the videos and told DC News Now she believes the people detained were taken to a detention center in Farmville. 'Sometimes they would take them one by one, and sometimes they would pack the van with a few detainees and then drive away,' she said. Hagerstown rallies for return of Vietnamese woman detained by ICE It's unclear who the detained individuals are or why they are being detained. DC News Now reached out to ICE to learn more about the apparent arrests and to learn when it would conduct an operation at a courthouse. An ICE official has not yet responded. Saiyed said she thinks the government is following a specific tactic that starts with an ICE prosecutor asking the judge to dismiss an immigration case. 'The judge will let people know that they have the ability to appeal. The individual will say, 'Yes, I want to appeal,'' she said. 'Then, they'll step out of the courtroom… and immediately be arrested.' People who want to stay in the U.S. and are trying to prove why they should be allowed to, often come to the immigration court in Sterling. Many times, it can lead to a trial where they present evidence, offer witness testimonies, and then a judge will decide whether they can stay. Miguel Palmeiro, an immigration attorney in Northern Virginia, said he now has clients who are afraid to go to court — even for people he believes have strong asylum cases. 'We had submitted something like over a thousand pages of proof of their asylum claim, and now the client's too scared,' he said. 'So the client doesn't show up to court and then they don't even have a chance to win their case… We're not even getting to the real issue of, 'should they be in America or not.'' Man challenges GujCTOC FIR filed over Covid-19 lockdown violation

Ahmedabad: Siddhpur resident Akbarmiya Saiyed has filed a petition complaining that the police wrongly invoked the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Control Act ( GujCTOC ) against him and his family members merely for violation of Covid-19 lockdown guidelines. Saiyed petitioned for the quashing of the FIR under GujCTOC by the Siddhpur police in Patan district, registered on Aug 27, 2021. He sought a stay on any possible police action. Justice D A Joshi on April 24 refused to grant any stay and sought reply from the state govt and the complainant, then police inspector at Siddhpur, Chirag Gosai. "Learned Additional Public Prosecutor waives service of notice for and on behalf of the respondent - State of Gujarat. Direct service through concerned police station is permitted," the court order reads. According to Saiyed's advocate H B Shethna, Saiyed and his brother Rizvan were caught by the Siddhpur police riding on a bike amid Covid-19 related restrictions in 2021. They were brought to the police station, and an FIR was registered against them for violation of notification during the pandemic. Their father came to know about this and rushed to the police station to relieve them. A quarrel took place, and their father allegedly assaulted a police officer. This resulted in a second FIR against them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How To Invest In Whisky. Rizvan, who is a practising lawyer, unsuccessfully sought anticipatory bail from a special court in Ahmedabad. He approached the HC for anticipatory bail, and the high court stayed the police from taking any coercive action against him in 2022. Akbarmiya approached the HC last year for quashing of the FIR after the police filed a chargesheet and showed him as an absconder. The HC issued notice to the authorities concerned but did not get any response. He filed another application last week seeking a stay on any action emanating from the FIR. Advocate Shethna contended that slapping of GujCTOC charges was a vindictive action by the police following the scuffle between the family members and the police. Moreover, the petitioner has contended that for invoking GujCTOC, there should be at least two FIRs for offences entailing more than three years of imprisonment before the promulgation of the special law in 2019. In this case, there was only one FIR registered in 2016. The other two FIRs against the petitioner were filed on the same day, and that too for the Covid lockdown violation. Whereas, the law says that GujCTOC can be invoked upon registration of an offence related to organised crime after the promulgation of the Act. The HC has posted the hearing on Monday.
