Salem Corporation provides manure produced at MCCs to farmers for free

The Salem Corporation is providing manure produced at the micro composting centres (MCC) to farmers free of cost. The farmers can furnish their Aadhaar cards and collect the manure. The 60 wards in the Corporation generate over 550 tonnes of garbage every day, which is segregated as biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The biodegradable waste is sent to the MCCs located at 36 places to produce manure, and the remaining is sent to the Chettichavadi dump yard. Each MCC has the capacity to produce two tonnes of manure. This manure is being provided free of cost to farmers and people involved in terrace gardening. Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan was instructed to provide this manure to farmers. The Commissioner inspected MCCs and directed the staff to distribute the manure for free. The details of manure distributed to farmers should be provided at the monthly farmers' grievances redress meetings. Civic body officials said that at present 200 tonnes of manure are available at the MCCs. The farmers can furnish their Aadhaar cards along with the application for receiving the manure. People who own terrace gardens can also apply with proper details, the officials added.

AIADMK stages walkout from Salem Corporation council meeting

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) councillors staged a walkout from the Salem Corporation council meeting on Friday (July 25, 2025), alleging that corporation officials are creating revenue loss for the civic body. Salem Corporation Mayor A. Ramachandran presided over the meeting during which 75 resolutions were passed. Speaking at the meeting, ward 22 councillor (AIADMK) K.C. Selvaraj said that citing deviation in works carried out in wards 22 and 24, the Salem Corporation revised the tender amount and created a loss for the civic body. The corporation should constitute a committee including the councillors to inquire into this. Stating that the two ward councillors belong to AIADMK, the officials are cheating them, he alleged. Ward 32 councillor (DMK) K. Bowmika Thapsira said that the sewage water from the public toilets behind the VOC market flows on the road and corporation officials do not remove the encroachments in the ward. Ward 34 councillor (DMK) Esan Elango said that online food delivery companies are providing food in plastic containers. The Salem Corporation should bring a change and should make them serve the food in eco-friendly, alternative ways. It will be the best example for other corporations in the State, he added. While speaking in the meeting, ward 9 councillor V. Deivalingam alleged that AIADMK IT wing personnel were covering the council meeting along with media persons. When the AIADMK councillors opposed this, it turned into a verbal duel between the two party councillors. Later, the Mayor intervened and pacified both sides. Opposition leader (AIADMK) N. Yadhavamoorthy said that due to wrong policies of Salem Corporation in providing tenders for the shops in VOC market, Salem Corporation is facing a loss of ₹8 crore each year. In the pretext of deviation, the corporation officials increased the tender cost in all works. Replying to these allegations, corporation officials clarified that during the course of work, there are chances for an increase in cost and it will be under the price of the estimation of the project. But, unsatisfied with the answers, the AIADMK councillors staged a walkout from the meeting.

Salem Corporation to repair and replace damaged drinking water pipelines at ₹1.95 crore

The Salem Corporation has decided to repair and replace damaged drinking water pipelines in four zones at a cost of ₹1.95 crore. Through the Salem-Mettur dedicated water supply scheme and the Nangavalli-Attur water scheme, Salem Corporation is receiving 152 MLD of water per day and supplying it to 60 wards in the Ammapet, Hasthampatti, Suramangalam, and Kondalampatti zones. While more than 10 lakh people are residing in Salem Corporation limits, there are over 1.35 lakh household water connections and over 3,000 commercial water connections. Similarly, there are public water taps near the overhead water tanks in the city. At present, people receive water once a week on an average and in some wards, people receive it once in five days. Meanwhile, councillors demanded to replace or repair the damaged pipelines to distribute drinking water equally to all wards, as damage to water pipelines is reported in many parts of the city. The officials said that as more water is now pumped via the old pipelines, water pipelines in some places are damaged regularly. To address the issue, these damaged pipelines will be repaired at a cost of ₹48 lakh each in Kondalampatti and Hasthampatti. At Ammapet and Suramangalam zones, pipelines will be repaired and replaced at ₹49 lakh and ₹49.50 lakh, respectively. Through these works, all wards will receive water equally. At present, the damaged pipelines on Sarada College Main Road near Alagapuram have been repaired and replaced. These works will also be carried out in the remaining places soon, officials added.
