Salem Corporation to repair and replace damaged drinking water pipelines at ₹1.95 crore

The Hindu17-07-2025
The Salem Corporation has decided to repair and replace damaged drinking water pipelines in four zones at a cost of ₹1.95 crore.
Through the Salem-Mettur dedicated water supply scheme and the Nangavalli-Attur water scheme, Salem Corporation is receiving 152 MLD of water per day and supplying it to 60 wards in the Ammapet, Hasthampatti, Suramangalam, and Kondalampatti zones.
While more than 10 lakh people are residing in Salem Corporation limits, there are over 1.35 lakh household water connections and over 3,000 commercial water connections. Similarly, there are public water taps near the overhead water tanks in the city.
At present, people receive water once a week on an average and in some wards, people receive it once in five days. Meanwhile, councillors demanded to replace or repair the damaged pipelines to distribute drinking water equally to all wards, as damage to water pipelines is reported in many parts of the city.
Following these demands, the Salem Corporation decided to repair and replace the damaged pipelines in all four wards. The officials said that as more water is now pumped via the old pipelines, water pipelines in some places are damaged regularly. To address the issue, these damaged pipelines will be repaired at a cost of ₹48 lakh each in Kondalampatti and Hasthampatti.
At Ammapet and Suramangalam zones, pipelines will be repaired and replaced at ₹49 lakh and ₹49.50 lakh, respectively. Through these works, all wards will receive water equally. At present, the damaged pipelines on Sarada College Main Road near Alagapuram have been repaired and replaced. These works will also be carried out in the remaining places soon, officials added.

Salem Corporation provides manure produced at MCCs to farmers for free

The Salem Corporation is providing manure produced at the micro composting centres (MCC) to farmers free of cost. The farmers can furnish their Aadhaar cards and collect the manure. The 60 wards in the Corporation generate over 550 tonnes of garbage every day, which is segregated as biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The biodegradable waste is sent to the MCCs located at 36 places to produce manure, and the remaining is sent to the Chettichavadi dump yard. Each MCC has the capacity to produce two tonnes of manure. This manure is being provided free of cost to farmers and people involved in terrace gardening. Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan was instructed to provide this manure to farmers. The Commissioner inspected MCCs and directed the staff to distribute the manure for free. The details of manure distributed to farmers should be provided at the monthly farmers' grievances redress meetings. Civic body officials said that at present 200 tonnes of manure are available at the MCCs. The farmers can furnish their Aadhaar cards along with the application for receiving the manure. People who own terrace gardens can also apply with proper details, the officials added.
