Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Whole Cucumbers: What to Know

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning concerning an investigation in several states related to an outbreak of Salmonella linked to whole cucumbers. According to the agency, there have been 26 reported cases in 15 states that have resulted in nine hospitalizations. The states affected are California, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee. However, the CDC warns 'this outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses, and the true number of sick people is likely much higher than the number reported. This is because many people recover without seeking medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.'The first reported illness from this outbreak was reported on April 2 with reports running through April 28. 'Recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes three to four weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak,' the CDC adds. The CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are collecting data to investigate the outbreak, the CDC announced on its website. Seven of those sick from the outbreak reported taking a cruise during the seven days prior to becoming sick, all departing from locations in Florida, the CDC reports. Sick people were aboard five different cruise ships that departed from the U.S. between March 30 and April 12, it added.

The FDA Is Recalling Tomatoes in 14 States Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination

Two tomato recalls were issued due to potential Salmonella contamination: Ray & Mascari (sold in 11 Midwest and Northeast states) and Williams Farms Repack (distributed in the Southeast). No illnesses have been reported, but affected tomatoes include specific lot codes and packaging types; consumers are urged to discard them immediately. Salmonella risk is especially serious for young children, elderly adults, and those with weakened immune you recently purchased tomatoes, it's time to check your fridge for two important recalls. On May 3, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a recall notice for Ray & Mascari tomatoes, specifically its 4-Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes packaged in clamshell containers, as they may be contaminated with Salmonella.'Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,' the notice explained. 'Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.' The tomatoes were sold by Gordon Food Service Stores in 11 states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Any consumers who have purchased the 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes are encouraged to discard them immediately. As for the other tomato recall, on May 2, the FDA released a separate recall notice for tomatoes by Williams Farms Repack LLC, also due to a potential Salmonella contamination. This recall includes tomatoes in a variety of packaging, but all include the lot code R4467 (with some also marked R4470). This recall includes the following: 25-pound cartons of 5×6 tomatoes and 6×6 tomatoes 25-pound combo cartons 2‑layer cartons of 4×4 and 4×5 tomatoes 2‑layer cartons of 60-count tomatoes 18-pound loose packs of 60-count tomatoes and extra‑large tomatoes 3-count trays of tomatoes These tomatoes were distributed between April 23 and April 28, 2025, to wholesalers and distributors in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
