Screenwriters For Sam Mendes' Four Beatles Biopics Revealed

The acclaimed crew of screenwriters lined up to pen the scripts for director Sam Mendes' four Beatles films has been revealed. The names, first reported by Deadline, and confirmed by the official Beatles website, include Tony Award-winning writer Jez Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari, Spectre) Oscar winner Peter Straughan (Conclave, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and BAFTA- and Tony Award-winner Jack Thorne (Adolescence, Enola Holmes). At press time it was unknown how the workload will be shared and if each writer will work on their own film or if they will collaborate on all four of the titles that are being collectively referred to at the moment as The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event. The films mark the first time Apple Corps. Ltd. and the Beatles have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film. Each movie will tell the story of one of the members, with all four intersecting 'to tell the astonishing story of the greatest band in history,' according to a release. At CinemaCon in March, director Mendes said the films will provide 'a chance to understand them a little more deeply,' adding that the group 'redefined the culture and stayed with you for a lifetime.' He also said that he'd been trying to make a Beatles film 'for years,' but struggled to fit the story into one movie and was not interested in trying to tell the tale in a television series. The movies, distributed by Sony Pictures, are slated to hit screens in April 2028. The Beatles: New Rumor Suggests Potential Timeline for Sam Mendes' Movies

A new update regarding Sam Mendes' movies has emerged online. Sam Mendes is currently working on four movies that will be about The Beatles. It was recently confirmed that the films will star Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. It was also recently announced that all four Beatles movies will be released in United States theaters in April 2028. Appearing on an episode of The Big Picture podcast, Puck's Matt Belloni noted that there's 'speculation' that the movies could 'tell the story of The Beatles sequentially.' 'Meaning, the Paul story will be the first four or five years, the rise to fame, and that kind of thing,' he said. 'Then, they bring the other stuff in so that John's movie is about his relationship with Yoko and his death, ultimately. And, then, Ringo is the aftermath and the break-up, so it's sort of told through his perspective. That makes sense to me. Maybe they'll jump around or maybe it'll be the same story, just from different perspectives. I don't know.' Sony Pictures has not yet officially commented on the timeline of Mendes' Beatles movies, meaning this is just a rumor and speculation at this time. The official logline for The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event reads, 'Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary.' How the movies will be released also remains unclear at this time, as Sony has not yet announced if all four films will arrive in theaters on the same day or if a new one will come out once a week for a whole month. Mendes' Neal Street Productions will produce the Beatles movies in association with Apple Corps for Sony Pictures. Mendes serves as producer along with Pippa Harris, Julie Pastor, and Alexandra Derbyshire. Sam Mendes' Beatles biopic reveals cast, sets April 2028 release

Sam Mendes' ambitious four-part Beatles biopic has officially announced its cast. At CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas, Mendes unveiled the actors playing the Fab Four in his groundbreaking project, which will be released in April 2028. The Beatles movie cast features Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Each film in the series will focus on a different band member, making this a unique approach to storytelling in music biopics. 'We're not just making one film about The Beatles — we're making four,' Mendes told the CinemaCon audience. He described the project as 'the first binge-able theatrical experience,' aiming to give fans a deeper understanding of the legendary band's journey. This marks the first time The Beatles and Apple Corps have officially supported a scripted film about their lives. Mendes, known for 1917 and Skyfall, will direct all four films, ensuring a cohesive cinematic vision. Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman emphasized that this epic undertaking is designed to reignite excitement for theatrical experiences. With its star-studded cast and unprecedented storytelling format, the Beatles biopic is set to be one of the most anticipated film events of 2028.

MPA Chief Charlie Rivkin Assures Theater Owners 'We Stand With You,' Highlights Incentives, Push For U.S. Production

Motion Picture Association President and CEO Charlie Rivkin had words of solidarity for theater owners, telling the group assembled at CinemaCon that 'we want what you want — great movies that draw big audiences to your theaters.' At his annual keynote, he recalled the recent pledge by the MPA's latest member, Amazon MGM Studios, to release 12-14 films in cinemas next year in a commitment to theatrical exhibition. More from Deadline CinemaCon 2025: First Looks & Big Reveals in Photos Sam Mendes' 'The Beatles' Movies, All Four Of 'Em, Are Coming Out In April 2028; Cast Confirmed – CinemaCon 'Karate Kid: Legends' Gets Extended Look At CinemaCon That said, 'I recognize that our path can seem uncertain right now – that we're all feeling a bit of volatility on the road ahead. We get it. We hear you. And just know that the MPA remains your partner.' The exhibition industry has been rattled by a shaky first quarter and a growing feeling that studio partners need to shed practices that started during Covid and step up. RELATED: Rivkin's remarks focused on the MPA's work as the leading voice for the motion picture industry worldwide and its efforts 'to bring more films to theaters across the globe.' Leading that push is the group's push on incentives that 'bring production to our hometowns and reinforce our country's competitive edge – to get more storytellers, producing more stories, in more places, which translates into more films coming to a theater near you.' The U.S., he said, should be more competitive. 'The MPA is out making the case to policymakers in Washington D.C. and U.S. state capitals that film production matters. That production is worth their time and attention. That production is a boon to their constituents – and a down payment on our nation's future. 'We talk to them about how a major motion picture will pump, on average, $1.3 million per day into the local economy when we're in production – paying over $17 million in wages to nearly 1,600 local hires on location, all of them doing jobs that pay 64 percent higher than the national average,' he said. 'We shed light on the ways that hubs of production become hubs of economic activity. ' He noted a sweetened package working its way through California, where runaway production has squeezed the industry. The state just announced a record 51 films set to receive tax credits – a slate that'll lead to nearly $580 million in economic activity, he noted. The MPA is working with the legislatures in New York, which has sweetened incentives in its latest budget proposal, and other states. 'When done right, incentives bring production. Production brings jobs. Jobs bring paychecks to local households and opportunity to local businesses. All of it brings movies to your theaters and injects growth into the communities that buy tickets at your box offices,' he said. RELATED: But 'there's more the MPA can and should do if we want to sustain a future of American leadership in production. So together with our Union and Guild partners, we will be pushing for greater action at the federal level this year. We will keep fighting to extend tax measures that encourage investments by studios. We will explore new policies designed with a singular goal in mind, to ramp up filmmaking and create jobs for our workforce.' 'We are standing with you,' he told theater owners, 'and we always will, in pursuit of our shared mission: to bring the next generation of remarkable movies to your theaters; to build robust hubs of production in your communities; to create a thriving culture of creativity everywhere and a dynamic industry for audiences, casts, crews – for everyone.'
