Ludhiana: Decade on, regularisation eludes state meritorious school teachers

For nearly a decade, teachers of Punjab's meritorious schools have been crafting success stories, guiding students from humble backgrounds to crack competitive exams like NEET, JEE and board merit lists. But while their students climb academic ladders, these educators remain stuck in limbo, waiting for their jobs to be regularised. Teachers say the matter has been discussed multiple times with the education department, but with no resolution in sight. (HT Photo) This year, out of 189 government school students who cleared the JEE Mains, a staggering 131 belonged to just nine meritorious schools. In JEE Advanced, 21 students qualified, 213 cleared NEET and 37 Class 12 students featured in the merit list. Last year alone, 243 students cleared NEET and more than 2,000 scored above 90% in Class 12 from these institutions. Despite these outstanding achievements, the teachers behind the scenes continue to work as temporary employees. 'We've been waiting for regularisation for over a decade,' said Lakhvir Singh, a teacher at the Ludhiana Meritorious School. 'We were promised to be regularised along with Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) non-teaching staff, but while they are almost there, we are still left waiting.' Teachers say their voices have gone unheard despite years of protests and formal meetings. Teena, president of the Meritorious Teachers' Union, said, 'Our students are being recognised nationally, but the teachers behind their success remain invisible. It's disheartening.' Ajay Sharma, general secretary of the union, echoed the same disappointment. 'We've been delivering excellence consistently, but we're denied basic dignity. No salary hikes, no arrears, and no clarity about our future. It feels like we don't matter.' Teachers say the matter has been discussed multiple times with the education department, but with no resolution in sight. Meetings with top officials, including one scheduled for Monday, were either cancelled or delayed repeatedly. In February, former director general of school education, Vinay Bublani had said the issue was under review by the education secretary and a committee was being formed. However, no tangible progress has been made since. When contacted, Amandeep Kaur, project director of the Meritorious Society, said, 'I have recently taken an additional charge and have received the list of demands from the teachers. I will place them before the sub-committee in the upcoming meeting.'

Stalin urges PM Modi to release Rs 2,149 crore pending under Samagra Shiksha funds

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin submitted a petition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the immediate release of over Rs 2,000 crore in pending educational funds and the implementation of long-pending railway projects across the state. The appeal was made through State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu during the Prime Minister's two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, where he inaugurated various development projects and unveiled a commemorative coin honouring Rajendra his letter, the Chief Minister said that the Tamil Nadu government has been effectively implementing the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme since 2018, which has led to consistent improvements in educational outcomes. However, he noted that the Union Government had made the full adoption of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 a precondition for the release of central funds. Withholding funds for such a critical and large-scale scheme severely affects the future of lakhs of students,' Stalin said. He urged the Prime Minister to immediately release Rs 2,149 crore due to the state under the scheme for the financial year 2024–25, expedite the first instalment for 2025–26, and ensure that funding is not linked to signing the PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) Memorandum of Understanding. In addition, Tamil Nadu's School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi met Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi on Monday and submitted a memorandum seeking the urgent release of funds. 700 classrooms in Kota's govt schools are ‘ruined'

1 2 3 Kota: Class 11 student Alfi broke down in tears while describing the conditions at her govt school, which has been operating for decades in the nearly 350-year-old Nanta Mahal building in Kota city. Alfi's distress is similar to those of thousands of students in Kota, who are compelled to study in perilous environments. Fourteen school buildings have been identified as requiring immediate demolition to prevent accidents, and around 700 classrooms in 1,057 govt school buildings in the district have been classified as "damaged and ruined". Despite requests for maintenance funds for 200 school buildings, only 26 schools have received allocation of Rs 2 lakh each under SDRF fund. The govt senior secondary school at Nanta, which also accommodates primary and upper primary classes with around 600 students, has been running for decades in the centuries-old building. The school also lacks ownership documents for the building and is ineligible for maintenance funds. Following the school tragedy in Jhalawar, the Kota education department has initiated process for relocating the school. Narpat Singh Hada, assistant sngineer for Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SMSA), Kota, who surveyed the school, stated, "The centuries-old Nanta Mahal school is not technically safe at all and can face structural failure at any time."

Uttar Pradesh Government launches 'Learning by Doing' program to enhance practical skills in schools

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday launched a 'Learning by Doing' programme to redefine education in government schools across the state, according to a statement. "In line with the National Education Policy 2020, this programme provides students from classes 6 to 8 with practical training in diverse fields such as woodwork, metalwork, energy and environment, agriculture and horticulture, and health and nutrition," the statement said. The initiative, under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, reflects Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's vision of linking education with employability and life skills, it added. Adityanath has consistently emphasised making Uttar Pradesh self-reliant and empowered, which requires integrating skills into the education system. "Acting on this vision, the Basic Education Department has provided four-day multi-skilling training to science and mathematics teachers, enabling them to prepare students for real-life challenges alongside academics," the statement said. Additionally, with technical support from UNICEF and Vigyan Ashram, the state has developed a teacher manual with 60 skill-based activities, which has been approved by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), it added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 코인 투자금 300만원 있다면 '이렇게'해라 나스닥터 더 알아보기 Undo The government noted that in 2024-25, the programme would expand with the establishment of modern Learning by Doing (LBD) labs in 2,274 upper primary and composite schools across all 75 districts of the state. Each lab is equipped with 205 types of modern tools and apparatus. School Management Committees (SMCs) have been provided with consumables and raw materials to support these activities, it said. Earlier, the pilot phase of the programme was implemented in 60 schools across 15 districts, training 5,937 students in various trades. The government said the initiative led to a noticeable increase in student attendance and interest in learning. The government said it is working to expand this innovative programme to another 3,288 schools in the academic year 2025-26 under the Samagra Shiksha and PM SHRI schemes. "This expansion will provide vocational education benefits to lakhs of students across the state," it added. The government said that the programme not only equips students with new skills but also instils respect for the dignity of labour. A notable highlight is the active participation of girls in engineering, electrical work, and workshop activities, promoting gender equality in practical education. "The initiative is not only nurturing skilled, self-reliant citizens but also laying the groundwork for a strong and self-sustaining Uttar Pradesh, in line with the Skill India Mission," said Minister of Basic Education Sandeep Singh.
