Officials: Chaibasa study shows 78% recovery rate in malnourished kids
1 2 Ranchi: A nutrition intervention piloted in Chaibasa (West Singhbhum) has demonstrated a promising 78% recovery rate among children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), signalling potential for a scalable solution to the state's ongoing child malnutrition crisis. The results were presented on Tuesday at a state-level dissemination programme held at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) to assess the impact of the augmented Take-Home Ration (THR), known as 'Shishu Shakti.' The supplementary food product was developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, under the Strategic Action for Alleviation of Malnutrition and Anaemia Reduction (SAAMAR) programme. Of the 124 children who completed the intervention, 97 (78%) achieved recovery. Understanding community-specific challenges is essential. Factors such as low milk consumption, alcoholism, child marriage, and high dropout rates among girls leading to low maternal education directly impact child nutrition." Palamu DC, Sameera S, stated, "Training of master trainers at the state and district levels has been completed, and block-level training of ASHAs and Anganwadi workers is underway. We anticipate expanding Shishu Shakti across Palamu shortly."

700 PVTG ration card holders out of Ayushman in Palamu
1 2 3 Daltonganj: Around 7,000 ration card holders belonging to the particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG) communities in Palamu are yet to get the Ayushman card. There are around 14,000 PVTG ration card holders in the district. This was detected during the review meeting of the health services by deputy commissioner Sameera S on Monday. "All ration card holders of the PVTG should be provided with the Ayushman card at the earliest," she directed civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar. Speaking to TOI, Dr Kumar said, "Aadhaar cards of the PVTG ration card holders have not been updated. Further, they are not linked to mobile phones, which is a major reason of the gap." The issue of middlemen influencing blood bank was also raised. The DC told the officials, "I received three complaints in one week about middlemen dominating the blood bank. Identify such elements and control them. It's unacceptable." The issue of ambulances was also taken up. Last week, an accident victim died in the sub-divisional hospital in Hussainabad as there was no oxygen nor could she be taken to any higher centre as the driver had left his ambulance parked and taken the key.

Daltonganj: The Palamu district administration is working out ways to rejuvenate Batane river, which is a part of the Ganga River basin, by initiating a plantation drive to rejuvenate its ecosystem and cut down on pollution levels. "A geographic information system (GIS) mapping of the river will be done by experts. Drone cameras will also be pressed in," Md Shabbir Ahmad, deputy development commissioner, said. The renewed efforts come after deputy commissioner Sameera S on Friday met senior forest officials of the Palamu Tiger Reserve and directed to take efforts for the river's conservation. A sum of Rs 3 crore will also be sought from the Niti Ayog for the project. A tributary of Punpun river in Bihar, Batane flows through Chhaterpur and Harihurganj in the district.
