I tried the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 for 2 weeks – here's what impressed me

Every so often, a new phone will enter the market and make you reevaluate the potential of mobile phones. For me, in 2025, that phone is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7. Over the years, there's been a steep rise in flip smartphones, with users citing that they're drawn in by the small form factor and, of course, the cover screens. Personally, while I did find the previous Galaxy Z Flip phones cool, I wasn't tempted to buy them. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, on the other hand, is a different story. An edge-to-edge cover screen, superior battery life and customisability are just some of the things I love about this phone. If you're someone who's looking to get your very first flip smartphone, here are some reasons why the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 would make a good choice. 1. THIN FORM FACTOR Weighing just 188g and measuring 13.7mm when folded, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is the slimmest Z Flip so far – and you can feel it. For comparison, when folded, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is thinner than the already-slim MacBook Pro I'm using. And when unfolded, it's still slimmer than Samsung's own flagship Ultra phones. What this means is that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 practically glides into my pocket and sits snugly in it. It's also very easy to hold and use the phone with just one hand when it's both opened and closed. 2. BOLD, BEAUTIFUL COLOURS Admittedly, this is a trivial reason to buy a whole new mobile device, but the Blue Shadow variant boasts one of the most aesthetically pleasing colourways I've seen on a phone. Its metallic hues look gorgeous under the light and overall, the phone looks premium. Other options you can choose from include Jet Black, Coral Red and the online-exclusive Mint. 3. LARGE COVER SCREEN AND GREAT CUSTOMISABILITY In my opinion, this is the best reason to get the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7. The phone boasts an edge-to-edge cover screen that measures about 4.1 inches diagonally. It is the feature that elevates it from another gimmicky flip phone to one that's actually useful. Thanks to the large real estate, you can comfortably watch content and text people on the cover screen without opening the phone. Be sure to download Samsung's MultiStar module in the Galaxy Store to unlock a whole range of customisability options, including the ability to add any apps to the cover screen. With both the cover screen and main display boasting a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, it's comfortable to watch movies and short videos on either screen. 4. GREAT CAMERA SYSTEM To be fair, you shouldn't be expecting a Samsung Galaxy Ultra experience on this front, but it does perform well with the tools it has. The phone boasts two rear cameras – a 50MP wide and a 12MP ultra-wide lens – as well as an internal 10MP camera. I had tons of fun experimenting with the many different configurations of the camera system, whether it's using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 as a digicam or using the 50MP rear lens as a selfie camera. I used the phone at Twice's recent concert in South Korea and loved how bright the videos turned out, even when the venue lights were dim. 5. LONG BATTERY LIFE For the past two weeks, I used the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 as a secondary phone for entertainment and was surprised by how well its battery fared. After about two hours of watching videos on the phone, the battery only dipped from 97 per cent to 91 per cent. According to Samsung, the Flip 7 is able to deliver up to 31 hours of video play time on a single charge, thanks to its 4,300 mAh battery – the largest ever on a Galaxy Z Flip. 6. FUN AI FEATURES I'll be the first to admit that AI tools on smartphones are hit-or-miss, but the one AI feature on the Flip 7 that I love is Google's Gemini on the cover screen. You can activate the AI assistant without opening the phone and do things like check the weather, ask it random questions or perform miscellaneous tasks like voice recording and note-taking. There's also the camera sharing function on Gemini Live where you can get real-time help on things like outfit coordination and item identification, simply by sharing your screen with Gemini. FINAL THOUGHTS Over the years, I've seen many people express their curiosity and interest in ditching their regular smartphones and trying a flip smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 builds well on that interest and delivers what I believe is the new benchmark for future flip smartphones. That being said, I do concede that it's not for everyone. For instance, if you're looking for a top-of-the-line camera system that's the best in the field, this phone isn't for you. However, if you do decide to take that leap into the flip smartphone ecosystem, I can honestly say that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is one of the best options to flex to your friends. It's robust, rich in features and really, really fun.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Worth It?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 continues to refine the foldable smartphone experience, blending style, durability, and functionality into a compact package. With its innovative design and practical features, it caters to users seeking a unique device that stands out in a crowded market. However, it does come with trade-offs, particularly in performance, battery life, and camera advancements. Below is an in-depth analysis of the device from Tech Spurt after one week of use, highlighting its key strengths and areas for improvement. Watch this video on YouTube. Design and Build: Compact Elegance with Robust Durability The Galaxy Z Flip 7's design is a testament to Samsung's commitment to innovation. Its slim, foldable form factor is not only visually appealing but also highly practical, fitting comfortably in pockets and small bags. The zero-gap hinge mechanism ensures a seamless folding experience while reducing dust accumulation, which enhances the device's longevity. Constructed with an armor aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the phone feels solid and premium in hand, offering a reassuring sense of durability. Samsung has also prioritized aesthetics, offering vibrant color options like sultry blue shadow and coral red, which appeal to users who value personalization. The combination of style and durability makes the Galaxy Z Flip 7 a standout choice for those seeking a balance between form and function. Display: Immersive Visuals with Enhanced Multitasking The Galaxy Z Flip 7 features a 4.1-inch cover screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, delivering smooth navigation and excellent visibility even under direct sunlight. This external display supports app usage, allowing users to perform quick tasks without unfolding the device. However, its sensitivity can occasionally lead to unintended inputs, which may require some adjustment. When unfolded, the 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display offers an immersive viewing experience with vivid colors, sharp contrast, and minimal crease visibility. Whether streaming videos, browsing the web, or multitasking, the internal display excels in delivering a high-quality visual experience. The foldable design also enhances productivity, allowing split-screen functionality that is particularly useful for multitasking enthusiasts. Performance: Efficient for Everyday Use but Limited for Gamers Equipped with Samsung's 3nm Exynos 2500 chipset and 12GB of RAM, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 handles everyday tasks with ease. Apps launch quickly, and multitasking is generally smooth, making it a reliable choice for regular use. However, occasional UI lag can disrupt the experience, particularly when switching between resource-intensive applications. While the device performs adequately for casual gaming, it struggles with high-performance games, exhibiting frame rate drops and noticeable heating during extended sessions. This makes it less suitable for users who prioritize gaming or require top-tier performance for demanding tasks. For most users, however, the performance is sufficient for daily activities like browsing, streaming, and social media. Battery and Charging: Adequate but Falls Short of Expectations The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is powered by a 4,300mAh battery, which provides around 5-6 hours of mixed usage. While this is sufficient for moderate users, heavy users may find themselves reaching for the charger before the day ends. Charging speeds are capped at 25W for wired charging and 15W for wireless charging, which lags behind competitors offering faster options. This could be a drawback for users who prioritize quick charging and extended battery life. For those who use their devices primarily for light tasks, the battery life may suffice. However, power users or individuals frequently on the go may need to carry a portable charger to ensure uninterrupted usage. Camera: Reliable but Lacking Innovation The dual rear cameras on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 consist of a 50MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide lens, both of which remain unchanged from its predecessor. While the camera system delivers reliable photo and video quality, it lacks significant upgrades that could set it apart from previous models. Video recording at 4K 60fps is smooth, with effective stabilization, making it suitable for capturing high-quality content. The 10MP selfie camera performs well in well-lit conditions but struggles in low-light environments, limiting its versatility. While the camera setup is adequate for casual photography, users seeking innovative camera technology may find it underwhelming. Audio: Clear and Immersive Sound The stereo speakers on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 deliver clear and loud audio, even in noisy environments. Whether listening to music, watching videos, or taking hands-free calls, the audio quality is consistent and satisfying. This makes the device a reliable choice for media consumption and communication, enhancing the overall user experience. Usability Features: Practical and User-Friendly The Galaxy Z Flip 7 excels in usability, offering features tailored to its foldable design. Tent mode is particularly useful for hands-free video calls or media playback, while Samsung's smart UI design enhances multitasking with split-screen functionality. These features make the device highly practical for everyday use. Face unlock is quick and reliable, providing a convenient way to access the device. However, the side-mounted fingerprint sensor can be less responsive when fingers are damp, which may cause occasional inconvenience. Despite this minor drawback, the overall usability of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is well-optimized for a seamless user experience. Key Advantages and Drawbacks Advantages: Compact and stylish foldable design that stands out. Durable construction with premium materials for longevity. Immersive internal display with minimal crease visibility. Enhanced multitasking features tailored to the foldable form factor. Drawbacks: Performance limitations for gaming and resource-intensive tasks. Battery life and charging speeds that fall short of competitors. Camera system lacks significant upgrades from previous models. Final Thoughts: Balancing Style and Functionality The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 offers a compelling blend of style, durability, and practicality, making it an attractive option for users who value portability and aesthetics. Its foldable design and usability features enhance everyday convenience, while the vibrant display and reliable performance cater to most daily needs. However, its limitations in gaming performance, battery life, and camera innovation may deter users seeking innovative technology or extended usage capabilities. For those prioritizing a unique and stylish device, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 strikes a balance between form and function, delivering a well-rounded experience. Suddenly, a reason to buy the Galaxy Z Flip 7 appears

I've been reviewing the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 for nearly a week now, and, being honest, it's been a bit of a struggle. This is the first time I've ever used a clamshell foldable phone, and even though I like the form factor, it just feels too… squat. Recommended Videos A thickness of 13.7mm is a lot to slot in the pocket, even if I do quite like the ability to hold the phone in a palm when it's folded down. The compromise for thickness hasn't quite paid off for pocket-friendliness. Something else that's surprised me is that I've not really enjoyed the length of the phone – the 6.9-inch display comes with a 21:9 ratio for the Super AMOLED display. I thought I'd enjoy the longer space for scrolling and running through apps, but the persistent 'weird' feeling of something not being quite right lingers. It's definitely something that one would get used to, but I was a bit bummed out that I didn't like the longer display. That is, until today. The thickness conundrum While the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is thinner than its predecessor (the Z Flip 6 was 14.9mm) it's still bulkier than non-foldable phones like the Galaxy S25 (and certainly more than the S25 Edge (which is only 6.4mm). Yes, it's more durable – the new Armor Flexhinge (a new design that makes the phone stronger for folding and unfolding) is an improvement, and the IP48 rating means this thing is more protected than ever. (Although I still have reservations over this thing when it comes to dust resistance, the long-time achilles heel of foldable phones). Overall though, the form factor has merely intrigued me, and it's a long way from feeling like I'm a flip phone convert in any way. But today I used it to watch the new IronHeart series on Disney+, which is filmed in a 21:9 aspect ratio. I was annoyed that it displayed in 16:9 format, meaning it had black bars above, below and around the screen. So I zoomed in, and it was a cinematic revelation – it fitted the display of the Z Flip 7 perfectly. It was one of the few moments in recent years when a phone has properly impressed me – this is partly to do with me never having reviewed a flip-style foldable phone before, so this screen-filling wonder really drew me in. But it's also because the Flip 7 is a real step forward in terms of design – the Z Flip 6 has a noticeable bezel around the outside, and while the screen edge on the Flip 7 is hardly invisible, it's a lot thinner. A retro-futuristic moment When I started watching, I was transported back to 2009, the year I reviewed the nonsensical LG BL40 Chocolate, a device that was one of the first to have a 21:9 ratio screen. That's probably a little bit harsh. This was a time when smartphone designs were very… fluid, as brands didn't really know what was going to stick. (Actually it wasn't even a smartphone – it ran LG's proprietary platform). Back then, the 4.01-inch screen looked absolutely gargantuan, and it was such a novelty. Of course it was – it was very hard to get 21:9 video onto the device as there wasn't even an app portal on it, much less a video player. But I still loved watching widescreen videos on the thing, mostly because it just felt… right. Compare that phone from a decade and a half ago (wait, how long…?) with the Flip 7's AMOLED display, with the 2K (1080 x 2520) resolution (and 2,600 nits peak brightness) and it's easy to understand why I was so taken. It made me feel bad for ignoring the 21:9 screen format as a sideshow – I've not reviewed any of the new Sony Xperia phones that come in this screen ratio, such as the Xperia 1 VI or the 10 VI. The move by Sony to embrace this screen style for its smartphones seemed like it was just to be different – the Xperia 1 VI ($1,399, around $300 more than the Flip 7) comes with high-end screen tech and 'proper' cameras, positioning it more like a device for film-makers rather than the everyday user. Given Sony's screen tech and film background, this made sense. But now I see I've been missing out, and I find myself constantly reaching for the Flip 7 to watch a little bit of widescreen content, even if my lovely OLED TV is there as well. One little flaw There is one thing that still irks me with this screen size though – and it's something Samsung definitely needs to fix. When I started watching Ironheart, I was constantly checking to see if it was still in the 21:9 format – some content is partly filmed in this way, and I was worried that, when the scene changed, that I was suddenly zoomed in and missing some of the action. (I know this is the case when parts of a movie are shot for iMax, for instance). It would be great if Samsung could automatically recognise this and move the phone in and out of the necessary screen size so I know that I've never missed anything. Maybe it's already doing that, and I've just not used the right video to check. And maybe this issue should be laid at Disney's door – if you're watching 21:9 content on Netflix, for instance, it's automatically zoomed in to fill the screen, and it won't display the black bars all around, unlike on Disney+. But I don't feel confident that it's always the case, and it would be great to feel secure that I'm always watching videos in the most immersive way possible. This aside, the cinematic experience that the 21:9 ratio screen is not something to be sniffed at. The flip-style smartphone might not be to everyone's taste's, but if you like watching videos on the go and have invested in the higher-end streaming services, you'll find a lot to like here.

I'm finally ditching iPhone after 10 years for Android – Samsung's new handset has convinced me to switch in three ways

As The Sun's principle smartphone reviewer I'm very used to this process by now and have tested countless Android devices, many of which are great bits of kit. But iPhone has remained my main handset for a good ten years or so now. Suddenly, I've found the urge to switch and it's because of Most read in Phones & Gadgets Find out why in my full review below. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Look and feel My first reason for switching is quite simple - the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is just so pretty. I've had a try of all the previous Galaxy Z Flip handsets, as well as other clam shell-style flip phones on the market. But the Galaxy Z Flip 7 feels like it's finally got it right. The colour I have is blue shadow, with an aluminium frame and glass back that feels premium. Samsung has drastically improved the smaller external display you can use when closed - known officially as the FlexWindow. I feel like the Flip 7 has injected a bit of much needed fun into mobiles again, all within a stylish body The FlexWindow display now wraps around the two cameras so it blends in, rather than cutting a box around them. You can show slick animations like falling confetti which adds to the beautiful charm of the Flip 7 that makes me want to use it as my main smartphone. And when you flip open the handset the display is ever so slightly bigger than the Flip 6, measuring in at 6.9-inches with that unavoidable crease along the middle only really visible at certain angles. It weighs only 188g, so the Flip 7 feels mega light in my hands and even more so in my pocket. 4 It fits so nicely in my pocket Credit: Jamie Harris / The Sun Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Performance and features The Galaxy Z Flip 7 runs on Samsung's own take on Android 16, known as One UI 8 - and it's one of my favourites around. While there are some Samsung apps I don't really want - such as Samsung's own web browser - others like gallery and calendar are much simpler than Google's own. But the beauty of it is the choice is yours, whether you prefer Samsung's, Google's or some other from the Google Play Store. I love how vibrant the FlexWindow is - I notice people giving it a stare on the train Features haven't changed a great deal from all the AI we've seen on recent Galaxy phones but you can use One really neat addition is support for Samsung Dex, which allows you to plug your phone into a computer display and it will run like a PC computer alongside a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It's the first time Samsung has introduced this on its foldables, so you literally have a PC-like experience ready to use in your pocket. Samsung continues to offer seven years of security and operating system updates, so you won't have to pay for an expensive upgrade anytime soon as long as you keep the phone in good physical condition. Who offers free updates longest? The longer you receive updates, the longer you can safely continue using your smartphone - with the latest features thrown in too for free. Samsung For the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung said it would provide at least seven generations of OS updates and seven years of security updates. OnePlus At the launch of the OnePlus 13, OnePlus committed to at least four years of Android updates and six years of security updates. Xiaomi Xiaomi offers four years off Android updates and five years security updates. Google For the Pixel 9 series, Google said that devices would receive at least seven years of support. The chip that keeps things running is the Exynos 2500. This is Samsung's own chip instead of the leading However, most people won't notice any real difference. This bit of kit runs smoothly through any app I throw at it. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Battery Samsung has given the Flip 7 a battery boost compared to last year's Flip 6. It's bigger - 4300mAh - without making the overall phone physically bulkier. Having used the Flip 7 as my main phone for a week, the battery just about gets me through the day with general use of emails, However, the battery charging speeds haven't been upgrade from its predecessor, sticking to 25W wired and 15W wireless. It took just under half an hour to get the battery to 50 per cent. Sun's tech editor shows NEW 4mm thin folding Samsung – & teases 'flip iPhone' too Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Camera The camera department hasn't really changed at all since the Flip 6. While the Fold 7 gets a mighty 200-megapixel main snapper, the Flip 7 is only 50-megapixel. Alongside that is a 12-megapixel ultrawide and 10 megapixel selfie. That said, I don't have any complaints about the results with some detailed, vibrant pictures produced. And obviously you have the added bonus of being able to turn the Flip 7 into a stand, so you can easily take group photos without using the lower quality selfie camera (and awkward angles of the person taking the selfie). Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Price The Galaxy Z Flip 7 starts from £1,049. If you get in fast, Samsung are offering a free storage increase, with the 512GB model selling for the same price as the 256GB model. Don't forget, if you trade in an old phone you can reduce the price tag further, knocking off up to £453. There's also the There are four colours options available. I feel like the Flip 7 has injected a bit of much needed fun into mobiles again, all within a stylish body. I love how vibrant the FlexWindow is - I notice people giving it a stare on the train. It's also great to see Dex support now so I can use it as a PC-like experience, I might even use it at work. However, with a radical overhaul of iOS expected later this year, Samsung - and others - will have to make sure I'm not tempted back if Apple steps up big time. Rating: 4.5 / 5
