"Banerjee stepped over JP's car bonnet", accuses Sukanta Majumdar questions Bengal CM's credibility to observe Emergency anniversary
South Dinajpur (West Bengal) [India], June 25 (ANI): Marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India, Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's credibility of observing the Emergency anniversary and accused her of supporting Emergency citing a reference from Jayaprakash Narayan's visit to Kolkata. 'How can CM Mamata Banerjee observe the day of the Emergency?' he asked. 'When Jayaprakash Narayan came to Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee (as a form of protest) stood on the bonnet of his car. Mamata Banerjee was a supporter of the Emergency, and today, she has even imposed an informal Emergency in West Bengal.' The Bharatiya Janata Party is observing the 50th anniversary of the Emergency as the 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. India was placed under a state of Emergency from June 25, 1975, to March 21 1977, following the implementation of Article 352 of the constitution. Mamata Banerjee has strongly objected over the term 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' and accused BJP of dismantling Constitution on daily basis. 'I strongly object to the term 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas'. The Constitution is the foundation of our democracy, our rights, our motherland. But @bjp4india is dismantling it every single day. People's rights are being crushed, state governments bulldozed, yet they have the audacity to speak of 'more power to democracy',' said CM Banerjee in a statement. Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet today observed a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their constitutionally guaranteed rights and faced 'unimaginable horrors' during the Emergency. The cabinet paid tribute to their 'exemplary courage and valiant resistance' to the Emergency's excesses. Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that a resolution was passed to mark 50 years since the Proclamation of Emergency. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The resolution stated, 'The year 2025 marks 50 years of the Samvidhan Hatya Diwas - an unforgettable chapter in the history of India where the Constitution was subverted, the Republic and democratic spirit of India was attacked, federalism was undermined, and fundamental rights, human liberty and dignity were suspended.' It added that the Emergency was an attempt 'at subversion of the spirit of the Indian Constitution,' which began in 1974 with efforts to crush movements like the Navnirman Andolan and the Sampoorna Kranti Abhiyan. The resolution reaffirmed that the people of India continue to have unshakable faith in the Constitution and the country's democratic values. 'It is as important for the young as it is for the old to draw inspiration from those who resisted dictatorial tendencies and stood firm to defend our Constitution and its democratic fabric,' it said. Scale of Emergency-era atrocities exceed documented cases, says L-G
Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan on Wednesday said the scale of brutalities that took place during the infamous Emergency imposed in 1975 may be of a magnitude that exceeds what has been documented by various inquiry commissions. Addressing the 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' to mark the 50th anniversary of the dark chapter in India's modern history, Mr. Kailashnathan said for every known case of brutality and oppression — he referenced the notorious custodial torture and death of Rajan in Kerala and C. Chittibabu, a former Mayor of erstwhile Madras — there were innumerable atrocities that were either not reported or never came to light. The Lt. Governor noted that unlike today when there were numerous media outlets and social media platforms to bring out the truth, there was only the State broadcaster during the Emergency era. The Emergency was imposed by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, solely for political motivations and not due to any national exigency, he said. The 50th anniversary was an important occasion to discuss the dangers of the authoritarianism that characterised the Emergency era, the sacrifices made by its opponents and to reaffirm democratic values, principles of the Indian Constitution and freedom of the press, he said. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy stressed the importance of preserving democratic norms. Speaker R. Selvam, Home Minister A. Namassivayam, Consumer Affairs Minister P.R.N. Thirumurugan, A. Nedunchezhiyan, Art and Culture Secretary and others participated. A photo exhibition and a motorcycle rally by the police personnel were organised on the occasion.

Union Minister C.R. Paatil to address BJP's 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' event in MP's Bhopal
Bhopal: Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil will address the inaugural session of 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' programme, on Wednesday, being organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Madhya Pradesh unit here to mark the 50 years of 'Emergency' imposed by former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi. The programme will start at 4 p.m. at the BJP headquarters in Bhopal in the presence of state BJP President V.D. Sharma. On this occasion, the BJP leaders will honour those who were imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency period. During the programme, those who were arrested (MISA bandis) for opposing the Emergency, will address the sessions to share their own experiences in and outside jails in Bhopal and other parts of Madhya Pradesh. Tapan Bhaumik, one of the MISA bandi, who will be the special guest at BJP's programme, in brief interaction with IANS, said that he was only 16-years-old when the Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975. Bhaumik said that he along with some others were arrested by the police and were taken to the Habibganj police station. He recalled that when they were released from jail on March 21, 1976, people of Bhopal gave them a rousing welcome, which was a "healing balm" for torture they had faced. The group then decided to join the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Bhaumik added. The imposition of Emergency was a turning point in Indian politics as the citizens of the country experienced darkest days of democracy between June 25, 1975, which remained in place for 21 months till its withdrawal on March 21, 1977. The Emergency was imposed just days after Indira Gandhi was convicted by the Allahabad High Court for electoral malpractice in a case filed by socialist leader Raj Narain, who challenged her victory from the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat. The conviction led to Indira Gandhi's disqualification as a Member of Parliament and the Emergency allowed her to continue as the Prime Minister. The oppressive MISA was passed during the Emergency period. There was large-scale suspension of fundamental rights for the citizenry, detention and arrest of opposition leaders and critics, and press censorship.

Stalin's alliance with Congress is stark display of political opportunism: TN BJP spokesperson on 50 years of Emergency
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 25 (ANI): As the Centre observes the 50th anniversary of the Emergency as 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas', Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson ANS Prasad slammed Chief Minister MK Stalin for the DMK's alliance with Congress. According to a statement issued by BJP leader Prasad, the Congress party's imposition of the Emergency in India was a brazen attack on democracy, constituting a dark chapter in the nation's history. The authoritarian regime, led by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, brutally suppressed dissent, imprisoned national and state leaders, and committed gross constitutional violations. Launching an attack against the DMK and Congress alliance, the statement said that DMK Chief Minister Stalin's alliance with the Congress party is a stark display of political opportunism. Given the Congress party's dark history of human rights abuses and loss of life during the Emergency, the DMK's decision to collaborate with them raises serious questions about its commitment to democracy. The DMK's politics is marred by nepotism and authoritarianism, with key positions held by family members of former CM Karunanidhi. Udhayanidhi Stalin's appointment as Deputy CM and Dayanidhi Maran and Kanimozhi's presence as MPs exemplify the party's dynastic rule. This blatant display of family politics has become synonymous with the DMK's governance, Prasad said. Recalling that DMK leader C Chittibabu's death in a prison during the Emergency, Prasad called the DMK-Congress alliance ironic. It is ironic that the DMK, which suffered during the Emergency, has chosen to form an alliance with the Congress party, which is responsible for its suffering. Prasad said in his statement that the DMK's past, including the death of Mayor Chittibabu in prison, seems to have been forgotten in its quest for power. The people of Tamil Nadu must ask how the DMK can justify this alliance and its silence on the atrocities committed during the Emergency. The Congress party's actions during the Emergency were driven by a lust for power and a desire to stay in office. Despite this dark history, the Congress party now lectures others about democracy, the statement added. The DMK's willingness to collaborate with the Congress party, despite the latter's role in dismissing the DMK government in Tamil Nadu and subjecting its leaders to brutal treatment, is shocking. Given its alliance with the Congress party, the DMK's credibility to speak about democracy and state rights is questionable. Prasad lauded the Narendra Modi government's decision to observe the 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' and called it a fitting tribute. The BJP government's decision to observe the Emergency as 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' (Constitution Murder Day) is a fitting tribute to the victims of this dark period in India's history. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our democracy and Constitution. The statement said that the press was muzzled, and the judiciary was compromised, resulting in widespread human rights abuses and loss of lives. We strongly condemn the Congress party's betrayal of the nation's trust and their ruthless suppression of opposition. The leaders of the Jan Sangh and BJP bravely fought against the Emergency's atrocities. Leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, and Nanaji Deshmukh, among others, were imprisoned and subjected to brutal treatment for their unwavering commitment to democracy and the Constitution. Let us reiterate our commitment to defending democracy and upholding the principles of the Constitution. We will ensure that the atrocities of the Emergency are not forgotten and that future generations are aware of the importance of protecting our democratic institutions and values, the statement added. The central government has decided to observe the 50th anniversary of the emergency, which is called the 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas'. The then President Fakhrudin Ali Ahmed and the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government imposed an Emergency on June 25, 1975. (ANI)
