Local food bank receives 1.9K pounds of apples through donation program
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Concho Valley Regional Food Bank has received 1,920 pounds of apples as part of The United Family's Take A Bite Out of Hunger program. The United Family, also known as United Supermarkets, stated that the donation is part of the 50,000 pounds of apples donated across Texas and New Mexico through the program. This year's donation marks the 15th year of the program, which has facilitated the donation of more than 650,000 pounds of apples through a partnership between The United Family and FirstFruits Farms. 'The United Family feels very blessed to be in the position to make these donations for the fifteenth year in a row,' Joseph Bunting, produce business director for The United Family, said. 'We know how important donations of fresh produce can be for food banks and their clients.' Over $4M raised through San Angelo Gives 2025 Sarah Eckel, director of outreach and development for the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank, said the apples were donated through Market Street, a store chain owned by The United Family. She said the food bank has received apples through the program for multiple years, adding that this recent donation was larger than those given in previous years. 'We really appreciate the fact that United continues to be committed to fighting hunger with Concho Valley Food Bank here locally, and we very much appreciate any donation of food that we are able to send out to our neighbors,' Eckel said. Eckel shared that the apples will be offered to families within the 13 counties that the food bank serves through programs, food pantries, direct distributions and more. 'They're really great for kids, adults,' Eckel said. 'Everyone loves apples, so I think it's just something that people really appreciate, that fresh fruit.' The work continues for the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank, though. The food bank plans to host its Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday, May 10.
