Mother's Day celebrations offer comfort amid war

Amid the uncertainty and disarray caused by the ongoing conflict between Pakistan and India, Mother's Day arrived to offer some solace and a reminder of what most people hold dear. Taking a break from defending their country online, Pakistani celebrities took to Instagram to pay tribute to their caregivers and celebrate motherhood. In an Instagram post shared Sunday, Aiman Khan flaunted the mini-festivity set up by her family. "My Amal planned this," she said of photos of her cutting a flower-topped cake with her daughters and actor-husband Muneeb Butt as balloons hovered in the backdrop. "One of the greatest gifts I've ever gotten are my daughters," she added. Meanwhile, Zara Noor Abbas penned a heartfelt note in gratitude of her little one. "Noore Jahan, thank you for making me your Mama. You are my softness, my strength, my most honest reflection. Because of you and my mother (Asma Abbas), I understand what it means to love with every inch of my soul," she wrote. Paying tribute to all mothers and even those suffering from the tragedy of losing their children, Zara added, "Today, I hold space not just for myself, but for every woman - the ones who've carried life and lost it, the ones who mother in silence, from afar, or in memory, and those whose babies aren't babies anymore but will forever be their hearts walking outside their bodies." She continued, "To the women who gave birth, to the ones who raised, to the ones who are still waiting, and to the ones who once were: you are seen. You are sacred. And you are never alone in your motherhood. This day is for all of us. With love, with ache, with grace." A sacred status For first-time mothers like Saboor Ali, the occasion was nothing less than a milestone in this lifelong journey. "My first Mother's Day, with Serena in my arms and my own Mama in my heart," Saboor wrote, honouring both her baby and her late mother. "I wish she were here to see me become a mother but I feel her in the way I love Serena, in the way I nurture, in every quiet strength I didn't know I had, and in the kind of love that never ends," she added. "Today, I honour her, I celebrate Serena, and I step fully into the role she once held so beautifully. This love is hers, passed through me." Reflecting on the strength that motherhood lends her, she said, "I've never felt love this deep, this fierce, this sacred. I finally understand what love without limits feels like. My first Mother's Day, and I'm already forever changed." Sanam Saeed, on the other hand, not just celebrated her mother on the occasion but seemingly also dropped a special announcement. Sharing old and new photos with her mother, Sanam wrote, "I'll be one very soon Insha Allah, and I pray I'm every bit like her and more." Dropping a long list of traits she wishes to acquire from her mother, the Zindagi Gulzar Hai actor added that she wants to be "loving, nurturing, attentive, cool, fierce, fun, impulsive, confident, and a lioness." In addition, Sanam would also like to be "smart, approachable, supportive, honest, vulnerable, real, forgiving, and compassionate." As to how she views her mother, Sanam has three strong titles reserved for her nurturer: "My saviour, my protector, my role model." She added, "Happy Mother's Day to every single mama out there."

ATC jails 20 PTI workers for May 9 rioting

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Monday sentenced 20 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers to six months in jail and imposed a fine of Rs50,000 each after they confessed to their involvement in the May 9 violence. ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah announced the verdict in a case related to vandalism and the attack on a railway station during nationwide protests that broke out following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. The case had been registered by the Railway Police Station. The court also issued arrest warrants for absconding accused who failed to appear during the hearing. Meanwhile, a judicial magistrate on Monday turned down police's request to remand PTI leader Sanam Javed in their custody for further investigation but also did not accept Sanam's request to discharge her of the charges of rioting Police on April 28 arrested Sanam Javed and her husband, Professor Atiq, near Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. Islampura police had registered a case against her and others for allegedly chanting anti-state slogans, taking out a rally and blocking roads on February 8 in Lahore. On Monday, the police presented Sanam in the court at the end of her six-day remand period. The Investigation Officer (IO) in the case requested the court to extend the remand period for further investigation. The accused's counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq, requested the court to discharge her from "the politically motivated case", which, he said, had been registered merely to humiliate and embarrass her. He argued that Sanam Javed is being victimized. He argued that the FIR was registered on February 8 while the sections relating to Anti-Terrorism Act were inserted 80 days later. The magistrate, however, sent the accused to jail on 14-days judicial remand.

Glamour and celebrations

One of Sanam Saeed's biggest claims to fame in 2024 was her appearance in the contentious web series Barzakh. So far, 2025 appears to be a quieter year for the film and television star, but no one can accuse Sanam of melting into obscurity. To keep her fans engaged, the Cake actor lit up her Instagram handle with a 20-photo carousel of her life over the past few months, ranging from full-on glamour to casual meals out with friends to a hilariously relatable pouting selfie. Sanam's photo dump begins with her flaunting a deep blue and gold sari at a formal event, holding a golden clutch with her long locks hanging loose. We move on to a snippet of the star clad in a long white gown, touching up her lipstick. In the third shot, Sanam dials back the glamour but is no less stunning in a casual long white skirt and orange blouse as she snaps a selfie in the mirror of a lift. The fourth below-the-chin selfie shows us Sanam pouting, with the camera drawing attention to her full, made-up lips and her on-point mascara as her lashes stand to attention. The next photo shows a behind-the-scenes snapshot of an actor learning her lines, with her script lying open on a bed. We cannot see Sanam's face here, but nevertheless, we are fully drawn into the world of studying, reminded of times when we, too, sat on the bed memorising things out of textbooks. As a special surprise, we travel to a kitchen for Sanam's fifth shot, where she shows off her apron and grins up at fellow actor Humayun Saeed in a kitchen, drinks and cut-up lemons sitting on the counter before them. The next few shots slip into the casualness of hanging with friends and family, although one shot of an awards show sneaks into the carousel, with Sanam showing off a dazzling red gown. For the remainder of the photos, we flicker through yet more shots of celebrations with family and friends. It would be an incomplete Sanam photo dump without a shot of her smiling side by side with her man, actor Mohib Mirza as she rocks a sleeveless floral print dress. To wrap things up, we end with a beautiful shot of the glowing sun setting into the sea. "Life is pie some slices over the last few months," wrote the actor, ending her caption with the hashtag 'photo dump'.
