De-addiction centre to be set up at Swarghat in Himachals Bilaspur
Bilaspur (HP), Jul 31 (PTI) A 15-bed de-addiction centre will be set up at Swarghat in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur district to help those suffering from drugs, an official on Thursday said. Chairing a high-level meeting of the district-level committee of National Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) here, Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar said all necessary formalities have been completed and the centre will be operated under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This facility will offer treatment, counselling and rehabilitation services for individuals struggling with drug addiction, enabling them to reintegrate into society and lead a healthy and self-reliant life, he added. The de-addiction centre will be equipped with all necessary amenities, including rooms, toilets, nutritious meals, a recreation room, library, gym, sports facilities and spaces for meditation and yoga, ensuring holistic rehabilitation. The deputy commissioner said the de-addiction centre has been proposed keeping several factors like the border with other states and four-lane highway leading to Kullu-Manali, making it vulnerable to increased drug trafficking under consideration. Asserting the state government is actively engaged in spreading awareness among youth about the harmful effects of drug abuse, he said the district administration is also promoting public awareness campaigns in this regard. Bilapsur Superintendent of Police Sandeep Dhawal during the meeting reported an increase in narcotic seizures compared to the previous year. The seizure of 'chitta' (heroin) has risen from 302.17 grams in 2024 to 519.54 grams this year. Dhawal informed that regular awareness programs are being conducted in educational institutions across the district to sensitize students about the ill effects of drug abuse. Police officers are actively engaging with students in schools and colleges as part of these outreach efforts, he said. 34 passengers injured as bus falls in gorge in Himachal's Bilaspur
As many as 34 passengers and driver of a private bus were injured after the vehicle veered off the road and fell 20 feet into a gorge in Bilaspur around 1.30 am past Thursday midnight. The bus was on its way back from Nurmahal in Punjab to Darlaghat in Solan district of Himachal when the accident took place, said Bilaspur police. The district administration assisted in providing immediate medical attention to the victims and disbursed an interim relief as per norms. Bilaspur police registered a case against the bus driver, identified as Ashok Kumar, under Sections 281 and 125 (A) of BNS. Bilaspur superintendent of police Sandeep Dhawal said, 'We have started the investigation to find the causes of the accident.' Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited the passengers injured in the accident at AIIMS, Bilaspur. He wished them a speedy recovery and assured them of all possible assistance from the state government. Three hurt as boulder hits their car in Poonch Jammu Three men were injured seriously after their car was hit by a boulder on Mughal Road in Poonch district on Friday, said officials. The injured were identified as Mohammad Amin, 30, and Mohammad Khalid, 30, both residents of Shahpur, and Mohammad Javid, 25. The victims, who were travelling from Poonch to Shopian, were referred to GMC Srinagar for advanced treatment, said Surankote BMO Dr Mohd Yousuf Choudhary.

Himachal police giving out free drug test kit to fight addiction in Bilaspur
Is your child doing drugs? Find out in a minute with a urine drug testing kit available free in Bilaspur police stations. Under their 'Har Ghar, Satark Parivar' campaign, police in Bilapsur district are for the first time distributing urine drug test kits to help detect if a person is addicted to drugs. 'Urine drug testing kits have been sent to all police stations of the district so that the youth can be saved from the narcotics menace through early detection,' Bilaspur superintendent of police Sandeep Dhawal said. The growing addiction of 'chitta (adulterated heroin)' and other lethal drugs among the state's youths has become a serious social and health crisis. The kit is capable of identifying six types of drugs —- chitta, charas, opium, bhookki, smack and other narcotics. The test does not require any kind of medical lab procedure, the police said. This kit is divided into six columns and requires 2-3 drops of urine to produce. If a person is addicted to a particular drug, the corresponding column turns red. The entire process takes no more than a minute. 'Bilaspur police have 2,000 urine drug testing kits available and 200 kits have been sent to each police station,' Dhawal said. The kit, which can be had for free from police, has a market price of about ₹300, he said. According to a police report, barring 40 panchayats of the total 176 in the district, instances of buying or selling chitta have come to the fore in all remaining panchayats So far this year, the seized quantities of the drug has exceeded what it was in 2024, while the recovery of hashish has doubled.
