Who was the real Miss Lambe, Jane Austen's mixed-race heroine?

M iss Lambe is one of Jane Austen's most intriguing, enigmatic characters. She appears in Sanditon, Austen's unfinished novel of 1817. We know that the 17-year-old Miss Lambe is a 'half mulatto' West Indian with an 'immense fortune' that makes her 'beyond comparison the most important and precious' match in the seaside town's marriage market. Lady Denham, who lives in Sanditon House, has her eye on her as a possible match for her penniless nephew, Sir Edward Denham. But illness prevented Austen from completing Sanditon and showing us what she had in mind for this character. While working as literary consultant on Andrew Davies's bold ITV adaptation of Sanditon I became absorbed — perhaps even obsessed — with Miss Lambe, who was given the first name Georgiana Lambe for the series. At first glance, she seems anomalous: a mixed-race heiress in the genteel chaos of Sanditon, surrounded by speculators, suitors and social climbers. But as I began assisting the production team in shaping her storyline for the screen, I delved deeper into Austen's world and its colonial entanglements. My digging has left me convinced that Miss Lambe was inspired, at least in part, by a real woman: Sarah Ann Redhead.
