Kris Marshall, the star of Beyond Paradise, has openly spoken about his unconventional route into acting. Despite being expelled from school and getting the sack, the actor known for portraying Humphrey Goodman has established himself with roles in My Family, Love Actually, and Death in Paradise.
In a recent interview, Kris provided insight into his road to stardom, which was riddled with obstacles but eventually resulted in a thriving career. He's presently occupied filming for his latest role as Detective Humphrey Goodman in Beyond Paradise.
Following his expulsion from school, Kris encountered a turning point: retake his exams or pursue acting.
Speaking to the Guardian, the Love Actually star disclosed: "The only problem was, I had no idea how to get into the industry. Instead, I worked the odd, crazy job to make ends meet - doing shifts in a toothpaste factory or in the laundry of an abattoir."
He remembered one especially grim experience: "That one was pretty grim - the smell will never leave me. I was once fired from Iceland for wearing blue sunglasses on the till, and for a while, I knocked on the doors of people who hadn't paid their TV licences," reports the Express, reports the Mirror.
Kris's luck shifted when he met someone from the industry whilst working at a bar. His initial period involved touring with theatre productions before landing his first role on the silver screen.
However, it was his appearances in Love Actually and the sitcom My Family that genuinely launched him into the spotlight. He added: "I would get recognised daily. Since then, it hasn't stopped, but I don't mind - it's a small price to pay for what is a wonderful job."
Kris has experienced his share of professional disappointments, including the axing of his programme Sanditon before it was eventually brought back.
After struggling to capture viewers during its debut series, Sanditon, adapted from Jane Austen's incomplete novel, returned for a second series in July 2022.
Speaking to RadioTimes, Kris reflected on the programme's comeback: "It is the first show I've been on that has been cancelled and then reinstated.
"The fans did that after it took off in America, organising an incredible campaign to bring the show back."

Princess Andre's management respond after mum Katie Price lashes out over reality show

Princess Andre's management, The CAN Group, have shared a statement with the Mirror after Katie Price lashed out on her podcast over her daughter's reality TV show Princess Andre's management have issued a statement after Katie Price lashed out over her daughter's reality TV show. ‌ Princess, 18, is set to star in her own documentary series, The Princess Diaries, which is airing on ITV this weekend. Katie and Peter Andre's daughter has been paving out her own career in showbiz and her documentary series will take a look at her blossoming career and life in the limelight. ‌ The new series is set to kick start on Sunday August 10 at 9pm. However, rumours of a rift between Princess and Katie emerged in recent days as it was revealed her former glamour model mum will not appear on the series. It comes after Katie Price reaches out to Harvey's lookalike half-brother but fears 'he's too scared'. ‌ Katie later spoke out and has said she refuses to watch the TV series starring her daughter, but insisted there was no rift between herself and Princess – and instead lashed out at Princess' management company in an episode of The Katie Price Show released yesterday. Katie shared her upset as she was allegedly "not allowed" to take part in the show – despite apparent offers to do so for free. In the lengthy rant in the episode of her podcast, Katie claimed: "I've always said, over my dead body would I ever want her to manage my kids because she doesn't like me and Pete and me don't talk. I am very, very, very upset that Princess has signed with them." ‌ She added: "Now she's managing Princess and Junior, out of my control, I want the best for Junior and Princess, always, and I will never get in the way of it. But what hurts my feelings – and it does upset me – is when your kids grow up, you go to their assemblies, you go to their Christmas things, you go to their awards, you know, you go to their football matches or their gymnastics, you're involved in everything they do. "And knowing that what my career has been, Princess is taking that same path – trying to do the same as what I've done – which I absolutely love and adore of Princess but I had not been allowed to go on any photoshoot, no signings or Superdrug openings or anything like that. Why? Because I'm not allowed and I'm not welcome." Now, Princess' management company have responded. When contacted by the Mirror, The CAN Group said: "As a company, our duty of care to our clients is paramount. We would never advise a client on their personal life unless asked and we have never stopped anyone seeing their families." ‌ Meanwhile, Princess has continued to focus on her flourishing career as she made an appearance at beauty brand Space NK's new story in London ahead of its official opening today. Princess also appeared on This Morning today alongside her big brother Junior, where she discussed her reality show and spills what fans can expect to see as she spilled: "You see me growing with confidence as it goes on. You see my family, it's just really fun." She also discussed her decision to do the show as she said: "I got older and a lot more things have come in for me solo. A lot of things I used to do was with my parents and now I'm doing a show that is independent and actually focused on me. Now is the right time because my life is busy right now and I want people to see it." As This Morning posted a clip of the siblings' appearance on their Instagram, Pete left a sweet message which read: "Love you both. Keep being you" followed by a heart emoji.

Woman captures video of Magaluf strip in 2025 - and it's a devastating reality check

More info Magaluf, formerly the epitome of sun-drenched revelry, seaside escapades, and boisterous nightlife, has witnessed its appeal diminish recently. And a revealing video lays bare the melancholy condition of this previously bustling Majorcan destination. At the season's commencement, the spectacle of empty sun beds was particularly revealing. Furthermore, pub owners admitted to modifying their operating times in reaction to the shifting tourist profile. This decline in visitor figures is blamed on rigorous crackdowns targeting unruly holidaymakers. Bauza's harsh assessment came after an episode where a young lady was tricked into carrying out improper behaviour for what she thought was a free getaway, only to receive a drink mockingly called 'Holiday'. Moreover, substantial penalties reaching £50,000 were introduced for dangerous balcony-leaping stunts. Subsequently, in an attempt to tackle 'boozy tourism', severe drinking regulations were introduced, reports the Mirror. All-inclusive hotels reduced their unlimited alcohol offerings, public drinking attracted £1,300 penalties, and late-night shop closures were implemented. These policy changes seem to have discouraged visitors, prompting one traveller to document the present gloomy atmosphere in Magaluf this summer. (Image: Getty Images) (Image: David Ramos, Getty Images) In footage posted to TikTok earlier this week, the inquiry was raised: "Has Magaluf Strip changed forever in 2025? Not what I expected in August 2025." Alex, a British woman who has been working in the travel industry for over two decades and living in Majorca since 2005, expressed her astonishment. The YouTuber, boasting nearly 50,000 subscribers, admits she's "absolutely passionate about promoting the island positively". However, she was taken aback during a recent visit to Magaluf. She ventured into the vibrant area around 11pm, describing how eerily quiet it was as she strolled down the strip. The road, usually teeming with taxis, appeared deserted for most of the night. Alex commented: "I thought it would be a lot busier than this, I am quite surprised to see Magaluf like this. It looks more like April... I can't believe it. It's not looking very busy at the presence of numerous security guards outside bars, Alex observed they were "not needed really". She wondered: "Is this the way Magaluf is going? "The Majorca resident speculated that Palma Nova could potentially become "the new Magaluf", having noticed increased activity in this area. However, she conceded it "still [isn't] the crowds expected in August".On YouTube, viewers shared their thoughts on the transformation of the popular party destination. One reminisced: "Back in the day, you wouldn't be able to move in Magaluf in the peak summer months. "Another lamented: "Dead atmosphere, it's a bit sad. "It's got an end of season feel about it. I remember going more than twenty years ago in August and the streets and bars were all packed." One individual voiced their worry, stating: "Feel very sad to see the bars empty like that. If this continues a lot of bars will close the doors this season and not reopen next year." A former representative nostalgically recalled: "I repped there in 2008 for Thomas Cook in the hotel which used to be Majorca beach now Meliá south beach, we used to take 500 people onto the strip on bar crawl once a week, it used to be rammed. "Some have even confessed to forsaking Majorca for other destinations that provide better value for money and a more welcoming atmosphere for person disclosed their travel plans, saying: "I'm going to Rhodes next Saturday. "It costs less than half of what I'd have to pay in Majorca. And they welcome tourists.".

BBC Strictly Come Dancing star makes prediction over show's future

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Vincent Simone, the 46-year-old dancer who graced the BBC 's Saturday night staple Strictly Come Dancing from 2006 to 2012, anticipates that the show will continue to air for at least another decade. The programme, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, has amassed immense popularity and Vincent believes this will ensure its longevity on our screens. In an exclusive chat with BANG Showbiz, Vincent confidently stated: "I think it will carry on for at least another 10 years. I mean, I don't see why not. "We meet all the Strictly fans who come and see our own shows and they just love it too much. It's the best excuse to get together, families or friends, a bunch of ladies, and they just gossip about the show, they just get entertained from amazing dancing or, you know, fit celebrities." (Image: BBC) He continued: "There is everything in that show and every year you have the variety because you get 16 new celebrities joining the show so it's going to be fresh. You can't say, 'Oh it's always the same thing', yes, they might do the same dances but every person is so individual, especially when they have character and personality. "It's an amazing show. I can't see it ever ending but I will say at least another 10 years just by meeting the fans at the stage door afterwards, they're just obsessed with the show. They will always watch it, no matter what." Vincent believed the timing was perfect to depart Strictly when he announced his exit in 2013 but disclosed that he would welcome a comeback to the programme, especially after witnessing his mate Ian Waite flourish on Dancing with the Stars - the Australian edition of the show, reports the Mirror. The Italian performer explained: "When I left, I thought that was the right time. I was super busy and it go the point where it was seven years in a row, it got to the point where I just needed a change. I did get my change with West End shows and so many other things. "I think now with age, like Ian is taking part in the Australian version. He loves it, he's doing really well. When you watch him dancing with these celebrities on the Australian version you think, 'Oh my gosh'. For me, because he's my friend, but for me he still has it. He could easily be on Strictly the UK version and I like to think that I could do the same because I could bring my personality and my dancing. So I wouldn't mind that as a challenge at some point." (Image: Evening Gazette) Vincent is set to feature alongside former Strictly professionals - Ian Waite, James Jordan, Brendan Cole and Pasha Kovalev - in The Return of the Legends tour this autumn and shared that the performances will be more spectacular than last year's sold-out tour. He commented: "We've got a semi-new show coming up and we're all looking forward to it because obviously it's been nearly a year. It will be nice to be back all together and come out bigger than last year. "We're also gonna have our solos which for me personally are the most special numbers in the show, when each individual couple gets the stage on their own and for me that's just magic. Everybody has the chance to showcase their talent and their own style of dance. I'll be doing my Argentine Tangos, Ian will be doing his beautiful ballroom dances and Pasha, the Latin king, will be doing his Samba numbers and so on." Strictly Come Dancing is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
