(HT representative) The information was shared during first meeting of the newly constituted standing committee of the administrator's advisory council on sports, Chandigarh, at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, under the chairmanship of Sanjay Tandon on Monday. The tenders, floated by the engineering department, will be opened on August 18. The committee further was informed that the tender to convert the Sector 39 swimming pool into an all-weather facility has been allotted, with completion targeted for October 31. Upgrade works are also in progress at the Basketball Hall in Sector 42, the hockey stadiums in Sectors 42 and 18, and the sports infrastructure at Lake Sports Complex, with the aim of meeting national standards and enabling the city to host more national-level competitions. An online portal for cash awards to sportspersons has been developed and will be launched on National Sports Day, August 29. A dedicated sports policy for specially abled sportspersons has been prepared and will be rolled out shortly. Committee members recommended that sports associations be allowed to display sponsor branding free of cost within sports complexes to facilitate the organisation of national and international events, noting that most associations rely heavily on sponsorships. The joint director sports informed that a policy on this is under active consideration and will be finalised soon. He also stated that work is underway on a policy to provide Group 'A' and Group 'B' government jobs to meritorious sportspersons. The committee also commended the newly renovated conference hall at the sports complex, where the meeting was held. The chairman suggested that sports associations be allowed to book the facility for meetings at nominal charges fixed by the department.

Chandigarh: The first meeting of the newly constituted standing committee of the UT's Administrator's Advisory Council on Sports was held at the Sports Complex in Sector 42. It was chaired by Sanjay Tandon. Sorabh Kumar Arora, director, sports, Chandigarh administration, put forth a presentation on major initiatives of the department. He informed the meeting that proposals for an international-level multi-purpose hall, Olympic standard swimming pool, and girls' hostel had been initiated, with tenders floated to finalise a consultant for design preparation. The facilities will be opened on Aug 18. The committee was told that the Sector 39 swimming pool will be converted into an all-weather swimming pool by Oct 31. Upgradation works are also under way at the basketball hall, sports complex, Sector 42; hockey stadiums in sectors 42 and 18; and Lake Sports Complex to meet national standards for hosting major competitions. Over 20 skaters from Chandigarh who shone in Asian Roller Skating Championship felicitated

The Chandigarh Skating Association has felicitated more than 20 city skaters, part of various roller-skating Indian teams, which won medals in the recently concluded 20th Asian Roller-Skating Championship in South Korea. Manika Mahajan, Yashika Sharma, Vinnati, Himanshi Kaushal and Anshika Sharma were part of the Indian roller hockey girls' team, which won the gold medal. Chandigarh skaters Gurshaan Singh Aujla, Angadbir Singh, Jujhar Singh and Naman Gussian were part of the silver medal-winning Indian roller hockey men's team. Dhiraj Shaunka, Damanpreet Singh, Daksh, Mayank, Dhriv Rathore, Ritesh Kamboj, Sarthak and Ansh Sharma of Chandigarh were part of the U-19 gold medal-winning Indian roller hockey team. Angel Kaushik, Sonam Singh and Jasmine Saini were part of the silver medal-winning Indian inline hockey junior girls' team. Jobanjeet Singh, Abhyuday Thakur, Paraspreet Singh and Sandhya Tiwari were part of the bronze medal-winning Indian inline hockey junior boys' team. 'Roller skating is among the popular sports in Chandigarh, and city skaters have always made the country proud at the international level. The inclusion of cash awards in the sports policy has further boosted sports in the city, and the performance in South Korea is a testimony to that,' Chandigarh Roller Skating Association president Arun Walia said. Sanjay Tandon, the chairman of the Standing Committee of the Administrator's Advisory Council on Sports, was the chief guest at the event. Along with the skaters, Sanan Mahajan, who was the manager of the Indian team in Korea, along with Harpreet Singh, who was the coach of the Indian team in Korea and is the secretary of the Chandigarh Roller Skating Association, were also honoured. 'It is a matter of great pride that Chandigarh skaters have won two gold, two silver and one bronze medals at the Asian Championship held in South Korea. With the administration's continued support in strengthening the sports policy, we will see Chandigarh skaters shine at the world level,' UT Cricket Association president Sanjay Tandon said.

Chandigarh: UTCA postpones gully cricket tournament indefinitely

Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, the third edition of the UTCA Chandigarh Police Gully Cricket Tournament has been postponed indefinitely. The tournament, which was seeing the participation of 576 teams and more than 6,600 players, had started April 20. The tournament was in the quarter-final stage with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final to be played this week. 'This is a time when national priorities take precedence, and we stand united with the country. Hence, we have postponed the third edition of Gully Cricket tournament indefinitely. The tournament had seen 507 matches in boys' format and 58 matches in girls' format across 16 venues in the Tricity. Now the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be held later whenever the time is right and suitable,' said Sanjay Tandon, UTCA president, while addressing media persons. The UTCA has also shortlisted 72 boys and 10 girls for advanced training based on their performances in the tournament. In 2024, a total of 3,456 players had registered themselves for the tournament. The UTCA had selected 20 of them; with the final match held at the Sector 16 stadium. The registration process this year was conducted through all the police stations across Chandigarh and ended on April 7 early this month. In 2023, a total of 208 teams — 204 teams in boys' category and four teams in girls' category — competed in the tournament. Meanwhile, the final day of the Indian Golf Union 25th edition of Samarvir Sahi Golf Championship played at Chandigarh Golf Course was also suspended. Any decision regarding winner or no winner is to be awaited by the Indian Golf Union.
