Victim's uncle among three arrested for ₹30 lakh robbery in Ludhiana

City police have arrested three men, including the victim's maternal uncle, for allegedly looting nearly ₹30 lakh from a money transfer office owner. Over ₹15 lakh in cash and USD 695 have been recovered from the accused. Police said Garg estimated the stolen amount at ₹ 30 lakh, though only about half has been recovered so far. (HT Photo) The arrested have been identified as Sanjeev Goyal of Jamalpur—uncle of the victim—his brother-in-law Varun Mittal of Amritsar and Gagandeep Sharma of Jodhewal. Their accomplices, identified as Deepak and Navdeep Singh alias Romy of Amritsar, and Jagga of New Kitchlu Nagar, are still absconding. The case was registered at the complaint of Charis Garg, a money changer from New Kitchlu Nagar, under Sections 304 (snatching), 351 (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. According to police, the incident took place around 6:10 pm on August 16, when Garg and a relative were returning home after collecting cash from his office near Damoria Bridge. The accused, travelling in a Maruti Swift, intercepted them, posed as Enforcement Directorate officials, frisked them, and fled with the cash. Deputy commissioner of police (city) Rupinder Singh said Goyal, who was under financial strain and wanted to start a business, masterminded the heist. 'He knew Garg routinely carried large sums of cash and conspired with his associates to rob him,' the officer said. Police said Garg estimated the stolen amount at ₹30 lakh, though only about half has been recovered so far. Raids are on to arrest the remaining accused and verify the total looted sum.

Police also recovered over Rs 15 lakh cash and 695 US dollars from their possession. Investigation revealed that the main accused is the victim's maternal uncle, who had been facing financial crises and needed money to start a business. The arrested accused are Sanjeev Goyal of Jamalpur, uncle of the victim, Goyal's brother-in-law Varun Mittal of Amritsar, and Gagandeep Sharma of Jodhewal. Deputy commissioner of police (DCP-City) Rupinder Singh said that the police traced the accused and arrested two of them. Sanjeev Goyal, the victim's uncle, hatched the conspiracy. Goyal was aware that Garg dealt in large amounts of cash and carried cash home every evening. Since he did not have a steady income and wanted to start a business, he devised a plan to loot his nephew. An official said that the victim did not disclose the exact amount robbed; however, he said that it was about Rs 30 lakh. So far, police have recovered about Rs 15 lakh. Raids are being conducted for the arrest of the remaining accused, after which the exact amount robbed will be confirmed. Bathinda: An RTI query has revealed that the Punjab govt has spent Rs 1,534 crore over the past 8 years on promoting its achievements through advertisements or notices in print and electronic media. Out of this, Rs 1,093 crore was spent on electronic media, and Rs 441.22 crore on print. Of the Rs 441.22 crore, Rs 317.17 crore was spent in the last three years, as revealed by information procured by a social activist from Bathinda under the RTI Act. Bathinda-based RTI activist Sanjeev Goyal received a reply from the Director of Information and Public Relations on May 13, according to which Rs 1,093 crore was spent on advertisements in electronic media over the last 8 years, from 2017 to March 2025, but a year-wise breakdown was not provided. Sanjeev stated that according to the reply on money spent on advertisements in print media, Rs 124.05 crore was spent under the Congress govt from 2017 to 2022, and Rs 317.17 crore was spent over three years under the Aam Aadmi Party govt from 2022 to March 23, 2025. As per the reply, Rs 5.77 crore was spent in 2017-18, Rs 14.24 crore in 2018-19, Rs 25.31 crore in 2019-20, Rs 26.70 crore in 2020-21, Rs 52.03 crore in 2021-22, Rs 92.76 crore in 2022-23, Rs 129.97 crore in 2023-24, and Rs 94.44 crore in 2024-25 (till March 23, 2025).
