In need of cash, man fakes ED raid to loot nephew
Ludhiana: Police arrested three individuals in the case of approximately Rs 30 lakh loot involving the owner of a money transfer office. Police also recovered over Rs 15 lakh cash and 695 US dollars from their possession.
Investigation revealed that the main accused is the victim's maternal uncle, who had been facing financial crises and needed money to start a business.
The arrested accused are Sanjeev Goyal of Jamalpur, uncle of the victim, Goyal's brother-in-law Varun Mittal of Amritsar, and Gagandeep Sharma of Jodhewal. Their absconding accomplices are Deepak and Navdeep Singh alias Romy of Amritsar, and Jagga of New Kitchlu Nagar.
A case under sections 304 (snatching), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 3 (5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of BNS has been lodged against them on the complaint of Charis Garg, a money changer from New Kitchlu Nagar.
On August 16 at around 6.10pm, Garg was on his way home with a relative after collecting cash from his office near Damoria Bridge when the accused intercepted them in a car.

The accused, who posed as officers of the directorate of enforcement (ED), made them sit in the car on the pretext of frisking them and robbed them of cash before escaping.
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP-City) Rupinder Singh said that the police traced the accused and arrested two of them. Sanjeev Goyal, the victim's uncle, hatched the conspiracy. Goyal was aware that Garg dealt in large amounts of cash and carried cash home every evening.
Since he did not have a steady income and wanted to start a business, he devised a plan to loot his nephew.
An official said that the victim did not disclose the exact amount robbed; however, he said that it was about Rs 30 lakh. So far, police have recovered about Rs 15 lakh. Raids are being conducted for the arrest of the remaining accused, after which the exact amount robbed will be confirmed.

Showroom owner held after four staffers die in west Delhi fire, families allege cover-up
A day after four staffers died in a fire at an electronics showroom in west Delhi's Raja Garden, police on Tuesday arrested the owner, Manas Mahajan, for alleged negligence that led to five people being trapped on the second floor of the building. Mahajan owns Mahajan Electronics and its other branches across Delhi. He has just been booked under BNS 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire) and 106 (negligence leading to death), police said, adding that he has not yet been produced before a magistrate. Officials said that the building did not have a fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC) as mandated under Delhi fire safety norms. The fire broke out around 3pm on Monday on the first floor of the four-storey showroom, which was stacked with fridges, washing machines and other appliances. The victims were identified as Aayushi Gupta, 21; Payal Singh, 20; Amandeep Kaur, 22; Ravi Kumar, 28; and Sandeep, 25, police said. They were on the second floor having lunch when they got trapped. Police said there was no fire extinguishing equipment on the second floor. Officials from the Delhi Fire Services added that the building did not have a fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC) as mandated under Delhi fire safety norms. A senior police officer probing the case said the victims were seated in a narrow corridor when the fire began. 'When the fire broke out, they tried to rush downstairs, but there was only one exit, and it was blocked due to heavy smoke. The employees then rushed upstairs and tried to reach the terrace, but the door to the terrace was locked. Further, there were no windows on the entire floor. They tried to get help, but it got too late. We spoke to doctors who said the four persons who died suffered due to suffocation,' the officer said. The Delhi Fire Services confirmed the challenges during the rescue, noting that the building had only one entry point. 'We had to drill a hole in the building to reach the victims,' an official said, adding that the second floor was stacked with appliances and boxes, leaving no space to move. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, police said. DCP (West) Vichitra Veer confirmed Mahajan's arrest and said proceedings have been initiated against him. HT reached out to store staff and the owner, but staffers declined to comment, while the owner's family did not respond to calls. Meanwhile, families of the deceased alleged that the showroom staff misled them after the incident. Vandana Singh, sister of Payal Singh, said her 20-year-old sister had been the sole breadwinner since their father's death. 'She started working two months back. Had we known it was an unsafe place, we would have never sent her. I got a call around 6pm, hours after the incident took place. Two employees told me she was injured in a small accident... I finally found out about her death from the police. My mother kept praying for her survival. She is traumatised. What will we do now? Who will support us?' she said. Aayushi Gupta's family also levelled similar allegations. Her brother, Saurabh Gupta, told HT, 'She was only 21 years old. She worked in the accounting and sales department. We received a call around 6.30 pm about the incident. We were not told about the fire or her death. I went to the hospital and found that the company people had already identified her at the hospital, and the body was sent to the mortuary... We waited the entire night and saw her body on Tuesday… a day later. Staffers kept misleading us and told us that she got injured. If she had died, why didn't they tell us? They wanted to get her married, and she had joined the job to start saving for her wedding. The owner and senior management never came to talk to us.'

Arrested drug kingpin reveals cross-border link
Ludhiana: City police have unearthed a jail connection facilitating the drug business and weapon supply of notorious criminal, Mukul Mattu, a resident of Mohalla Fatehgarh, from whom about 1kg heroin, a 9mm Glock pistol, and two country-made pistols, along with 21 live cartridges were seized. Investigation revealed that Mattu procured both the heroin and Glock pistol from Ashu, who is currently lodged in Faridkot jail. One of the country-made pistols recovered from him was brought through a Ludhiana jail inmate, Vikramjit Singh. According to Mattu, Ashu smuggled the heroin and pistol from Pakistan. City police have nominated both Ashu and Vikramjit in the case and will bring them on production warrant for questioning soon. Mukul Mattu was wanted by the police for threatening Dharampura resident Deepak for giving information on drug peddlers at the Safe Punjab helpline. The said drug peddlers contacted Mattu, who is involved in drug smuggling himself. On August 12, Mattu and his aides turned up outside Deepak's house and brandished a gun to threaten him and his family. Police lodged an FIR in the case and arrested Mattu, who is facing about eight FIRs. Ludhiana crime branch in-charge, inspector Beant Juneja said, "During interrogation, Mukul revealed that in 2022-23, he was lodged in Ludhiana Central Jail, where Ashu was also lodged. He said that Ashu, who he became friends with, has links with cross-border smugglers. It was Ashu who delivered the 1kg heroin and 9mm Glock pistol with 7 cartridges, which police recovered, to him. Ashu is currently lodged in Faridkot Jail. He has been nominated in the FIR and will be brought on a production warrant for questioning." The official added that the Glock pistol recovered from Mukul is made in Austria. "Mukul confessed that he also brought the two .30 bore pistols recovered from him through a Ludhiana jail inmate named Vikramjit Singh," inspector Juneja added. Another senior official shared, "During interrogation, Mukul claimed that Faridkot jail inmate Ashu has links with cross-border smugglers. He said that Pakistan-based smugglers gifted a Glock pistol to Ashu for purchase of 1kg heroin. Mukul paid Ashu Rs 2.7 lakh for the Glock pistol. He paid about Rs 15 lakh for 1kg of heroin. Ashu sent his aide to Ludhiana to deliver the consignment about one and a half months ago. Police will verify Mukul's claims once Ashu comes on production warrant. " The criminal nexus Seizure details --1kg heroin, a 9mm Glock pistol (made in Austria), 2 country-made pistols, and 21 live cartridges recovered from Mukul Mattu Jail connection --Ashu, lodged in Faridkot Jail, allegedly smuggled the heroin and Glock pistol from Pakistan --Vikramjit Singh, an inmate in Ludhiana Jail, helped supply one of the country-made pistols Cross-border smuggling --Mukul claimed Ashu has links with Pakistan-based smugglers --The Glock pistol was allegedly gifted by Pakistani smugglers to Ashu for heroin trade Financial transactions --Mukul paid Rs 2.7 lakh for the Glock pistol and Rs 15 lakh for 1kg heroin Threat Case Mukul threatened Deepak, a resident of Dharampura, for reporting drug peddlers via the Safe Punjab helpline. Kerala HC grants bail to four PFI men in 2022 murder case
Kochi: HC, on Tuesday, granted bail to four accused – Muhammed Bilal, Riyasudheen, K P Ansar and K V Saheer – in RSS leader Sreenivasan's murder case. They are members of the banned outfit Popular Front of India (PFI). Sreenivasan was murdered at Melamuri Junction in Palakkad on April 16, 2022, allegedly by PFI men. A bench comprising Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar passed the order by allowing the petitions filed by the accused challenging the NIA special court, Ernakulam, which had dismissed their bail applications. The bench directed that each accused be released on bail upon executing a bond of Rs 1 lakh with two solvent sureties for the like sum to the satisfaction of the special court. HC also imposed conditions, including that the petitioners shall not leave the revenue district of Ernakulam without prior permission of the special court; they shall surrender their passports before the court immediately; they must provide their full and updated residential address to the investigating officer (IO); they shall use only one mobile number during the bail period and communicate it to the IO and they shall report before the SHO of the police station having jurisdiction over their place of residence once every fortnight. In 2022, Centre had declared PFI and its affiliates/frontal outfits as an 'unlawful association' under the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. It was revealed that PFI and its members were allegedly responsible for several violent incidents and murders in Kerala, creating a sense of terror in the minds of the people. Further, it was alleged that PFI, its office-bearers and its members were indulging in unlawful activities with the intent to foment disaffection against the Indian State by provoking individuals—particularly innocent members of Muslim community—to defy govt and institutions established by law. Accordingly, Centre directed NIA to investigate the activities of PFI, including Sreenivasan's murder. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
