Seven pvt schools fined Rs 20k each in Bhind for inflated textbook prices

Bhopal: The Bhind district administration has imposed fines of Rs 20,000 each on seven private schools after discovering they overcharged students for textbooks beyond authorised rates. District collector Sanjeev Srivastava initiated an enquiry following parental grievances about schools collaborating with booksellers to charge inflated prices. The investigation was conducted by a team led by the district education officer. "The administration imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of the seven schools running classes from 1 to 8. They have also been directed to refund the amount to all those students from whom more money was charged for books than the prescribed rate," said Shrivastava. The investigation uncovered definitive proof of schools compelling students of classes 1 to 8 to purchase textbooks at prices substantially above market rates, thereby breaching educational standards and imposing undue financial strain on families. The authorities have cautioned that future breaches would result in more severe penalties. The district education office distributed directives to all private schools in Bhind regarding book pricing. The institutions must openly display govt-sanctioned rates and cannot mandate purchases from particular vendors. Parents are encouraged to notify the district authorities about any overcharging incidents. For accountability purposes, schools must now document all book transactions comprehensively. The authorities will conduct periodic inspections to curb such unfair practices. The MP Parent Association endorsed these enforcement measures, observing that such financial exploitation became routine recently. "The Bhind district administration's intervention set a precedent for other regions facing similar issues," said association's general secretary Prabodh Pandya. The non-compliant schools received instructions to return excessive charges to parents. They are required to submit detailed reports outlining preventive measures against future violations. The district education officer will supervise the execution of these remedial steps. This enforcement initiative forms part of comprehensive measures to oversee private educational establishments and ensure affordable quality education. Officials have stressed that whilst private schools are essential educational providers, they must function within regulatory frameworks and uphold ethical standards.

Student assaulted by Bhind collector files police complaint

Bhind: A college student who was allegedly assaulted by district collector Sanjeev Srivastava during an exam in Bhind district has lodged a formal police complaint, seeking registration of a criminal case against the officer. The complainant, Rohit Rathore, a resident of Dashrath Nagar in Bhind, submitted an application to the local police on July 13, alleging that he was slapped, verbally abused, and dragged by the collar by the collector while appearing for his second-year Physics exam on April 1, at Pandit Deendayal Dangraulia College in Mehgaon. In his complaint, Rathore stated that the incident caused him "mental and physical distress," leading to his failure in the paper. He further claimed that a video of the altercation went viral on social media, severely damaging his reputation and making him a subject of public ridicule. Accusing the collector of misusing his position, Rathore requested immediate legal action under criminal charges and also sought protection for his life and property, expressing fear of further harassment. He has also denied any attempt of cheating in the exam. "I went to the toilet. I left my question paper on the table, but when I returned, I couldn't find it," he said.

Doon residents demand urgent tree health survey after three die by tree collapse

Dehradun: At least three people lost their lives in the state capital this pre-monsoon season due to incidents of trees collapsing, despite environmental activists urging authorities for nearly a decade to conduct a comprehensive survey and health assessment of Dehradun's trees. "Last year, we learned that the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation had engaged the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in 2013 to conduct a tree census and health survey within their municipality limits. In June, we met the then municipal commissioner in Dehradun and proposed a similar initiative here," said Sanjeev Srivastava, eco-activist and member of Dehradun-based environmental organisation Citizens for Green Doon. Following appeals from environmentalists, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) wrote to FRI in Aug last year, seeking a survey like Chandigarh's. Documents accessed by TOI, reveal that Chandigarh municipality had allocated Rs 44 lakh for their tree health survey. "FRI asked the corporation to provide details of areas requiring the survey so they could prepare a cost estimate. However, there's been no progress in the past year, and the project was never handed over to new officers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These £39.90 Sandals Are Selling Out in Porthcawl Today wellnesstodayonline Buy Now Undo The callousness on the part of civic agencies is baffling. They don't act on time, and when unfortunate accidents happen, authorities often use it as an excuse to fell trees indiscriminately. Had a scientific health check been conducted, these incidents might have been prevented. We have FRI's services available right here in the city, yet it's not being utilised," said Srivastava. Environmentalists have renewed calls for a scientific tree health assessment. They also blame the concretisation around tree bases for weakening their stability. Meanwhile, DMC officials said they have written to the Chandigarh corporation to understand the details of their agreement with FRI. "We are also in talks with FRI to conduct this exercise pro bono, and we have a meeting scheduled with them in the first week of July," said municipal commissioner Namami Bansal.
