Alec Baldwin's ‘Rust': The only thing that's worth seeing in Western is also the most tragic
movie review RUST Running time: 133 minutes. Not rated. In some theaters and on VOD Friday. The wait is finally over… for a movie nobody was waiting for. Nearly four years after a prop gun held by Alec Baldwin and mistakenly loaded with a live round went off and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set, their movie 'Rust' has hit theaters. And how is the Western? Mediocre and often uncomfortable to watch; forever tainted by tragedy. Completing 'Rust' and releasing it was a massive error of judgement. 8 Alec Baldwin in 'Rust.' Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office Lesser films sometimes get shelved by studios for reasons of quality or other corporate drama. But an average picture that resulted in the death of a young mother will be available for everybody to view on Friday. That choice leaves a foul taste, even if the stated rationale is to showcase the woman's work. How can anybody love this movie? Answer: They can't. 8 Alec Baldwin in 'Rust.' AP 8 Alec Baldwin, Patrick Scott McDermott in 'Rust.' AP The belated arrival of 'Rust' is the strange culmination of a horrible, horrible story. First there was the worldwide outpouring of grief when Hutchins died at age 42, leaving behind a little son and a windower. (Director Joel Souza was also shot, but recovered). Then came shock and years of ugly trials against Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, resulting in Baldwin being acquitted and Gutierrez-Reed getting 18 months behind bars. Now that that press tour from hell is over, the film is here. Well, sort of. 'Rust' is only showing on 100 screens around the country (in New York, just in upstate Wilton and Albany) and drops on VOD the same day. 8 Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of 'Rust.' Getty Images for SAGindie The movie is definitely not worth a 3 1/2-hour drive, or the $14.99 at-home purchase price. Baldwin, pale and grizzled, plays a notorious outlaw named Harlan Rust. Should you forget, his last name will be spoken over and over and over again. Nearby cast-iron skillets will be shaking in fear. Rust stomps in 25 minutes into the movie to spring a 13-year-old boy named Lucas (Patrick Scott McDermott) from the clink after the kid is wrongly accused of murder. That the story bears a resemblance to off-screen reality, is the first element of meta awkwardness. 8 Alec Baldwin on the set of 'Rust.' Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office 8 Halyna Hutchins was the cinematographer on 'Rust.' HalynaHutchins/Instagram The tragedy of Hutchins' death overshadows anything that's good about the film, sadly including her own grand cinematography. Unlike the colorful, cheeseball vision of the West in Kevin Costner's 'Horizon: An American Saga,' Hutchins' depiction of mountains, saloons and forests is drained and sooty. A cowboy hat, however, is a weird fit on Baldwin. While I bought him as a man haunted by the ghosts of his past, the actor as an 1880s criminal in Kansas is far too big a leap to take. 8 Alec Baldwin filming 'Rust' in April 2023. via REUTERS When he earnestly says, in a home-on-the-range brogue, lines like 'What part of 'stay put' don't ya savvy?!' and 'my grandaddy,' it's not unlike when his '30 Rock' character Jack Donaghee visited Stone Mountain, Georgia. The difference is, that was funny. This is a pitch-dark Western that wreaked real-life devastation. Harlan and Lucas embark on a journey through the wilderness that's perilous, but never to the point of excitement or anticipation. It reminded me of the somewhat better Tom Hanks movie 'News of the World.' Old frontiersman, kid and campfires. Spoiler: At first they duo dislikes each other, but later they like each other a lot. Imagine that. 8 Alec Baldwin on the set of 'Rust.' Alec Baldwin/Instagram Even though the scene in which Hutchins died offscreen has been cut — for those keeping score, there's one good decision — whenever Baldwin starts shooting at some rogues, like the bounty hunter who's chasing the pair, the viewer is ripped out of the action. There is a lot of gunfire, and now we know none of it was truly safe. We experience Baldwin shooting the gun — not Rust. 'I wish I'd never written that damn movie,' Souza recently told the Guardian. I bet. But nobody forced Souza and Baldwin to finish it.

Heartbreaking twist in Gene Hackman tragedy as cops release new details about acting legend's final days after wife died
THE final autopsy of Gene Hackman tragically revealed that the Hollywood icon had not eaten for an extended period of time before his death. Heartbreaking video showed the moment Santa Fe Sheriff's officials arrived at Hackman 's estate in New Mexico on February 26 to find the 95-year-old actor and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, dead. 6 6 6 6 The bodies of the longtime couple were found mummified in different sections of their expansive property before it was determined that Hackman and Arakawa died almost a week apart. An official autopsy report ruled that Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease that is transmitted from exposure to rodent urine, droppings, and saliva. An autopsy for Hackman determined that the Academy Award -winning actor died from significant heart disease, with Alzheimer's as a contributing factor. Hackman, who tested negative for hantavirus, had a history of congestive heart failure and severe chronic hypertensive changes, according to the report. The medical report also showed that Hackman had no food in his system and had traces of acetone, which is consistent with prolonged fasting. Arakawa is believed to have died around February 12, while Hackman died around February 18. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Heather Jarrell said that due to Hackman's advanced Alzheimer's disease, it was possible he did not know his wife had died and that her body was in their home. HEARTBREAKING FIND Bodycam footage released by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office showed the moment deputies arrived at the puzzling scene, where one of the couple's German Shepherd dogs was guarding Arakawa's body. "Poor guy, he's sad," one of the deputies can be heard saying in the video. A separate video showed the moment investigators find Hackman's body in a separate section of the property. Heartbreaking footage of Gene Hackman's wife Betsy in last hours alive wearing mask while she shopped in pharmacy "Two totally separate areas of the house," a deputy said as another responded, "Mhm, it's strange." One of the couple's three dogs was also found dead in a crate in a bathroom closet near where Arakawa was found. The other two dogs were alive as one is heard barking in the background. 6 6 FINAL SIGHTING Two weeks before the shocking discovery, Arakawa was captured on surveillance footage keeping herself busy, running errands on February 11. Video showed Arakawa, wearing blue jeans, a dark coat, a scarf, and a black face mask, at a Sprouts Grocery Market self-checkout, purchasing groceries at around 4 pm. Minutes later, Arakawa was then seen on video stopping by Shine Pet Food store. The videos showed Arakawa was unaccompanied as she entered and exited the businesses without any glaring health ailments. The surveillance videos were part of a trove of documents released by the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office on April 15 as part of their investigation into the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa. Included in the recently released records were emails, phone calls, and internet searches by Arakawa, which indicted she had been scouring for information on flu-like symptoms and breathing techniques. Between February 8 and the morning of February 12, Arakawa searched on her computer for medical conditions related to Covid-19 and flu-like symptoms. The searches included questions about whether Covid-19 could cause dizziness or nosebleeds. In an email to her therapist on February 11, Arakawa said Hackman had woke up that morning with flu and cold-like symptoms but tested negative for Covid-19. In her message, she asked her therapist to reschedule her February 12 appointment for the following day "out of an abundance of caution." Gene Hackman's family's full statement Gene Hackman's family has spoken out on the actor's death after he was found dead with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in their Santa Fe home. Hackman's daughters, Elizabeth and Leslie, and his granddaughter, Annie, released the statement. "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy," Elizabeth, Leslie, and Annie Hackman said. "He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa. "We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss."

Police release new videos shedding light on investigation into Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's deaths
More law enforcement videos were released Friday connected to the investigation into the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The newly shared images show agents returning to the couple's home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to look for further evidence. The bodies of the 95-year-old Hackman and the 65-year-old Arakawa were found on February 26 after police were called to the scene by maintenance and security personnel. The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office has been posting redacted records during the investigation, following a court order that allowed the records to be made public with the restriction that images of the couple be obscured. Further releases are expected. The latest batch includes three hours of police body camera footage and comes after the release of a substantial report, photos, and hours of body camera and surveillance footage showing the initial response from law enforcement. The fresh footage shows law enforcement speaking to workers and going back to the home to search for further evidence in the early stages of the probe, when they didn't know the pair's cause of death. A video lasting an hour shows law enforcement going through he home early last month as they looked for Arakawa's laptop and other clues. Arakawa family representatives opened the house for the authorities and led officers to the bathroom where her body was located. A separate video shows a man who does pest control at the house telling law enforcement that he had not seen Hackman in at least a month. He adds that it's normal not to see or speak to the couple during his monthly visits to the property. He says that the last time he saw the actor, they waved to each other but didn't talk. 'He was looking frail,' the worker tells police. 'He was bent over with a cane. His hair was sort of wild.' According to authorities, Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a disease found in rodents that can cause a flu-like illness, including headaches, dizziness, and severe respiratory issues. Hackman is believed to have died about a week later from heart disease with complications from Alzheimer's. The couple had three dogs, one of which was found dead in a crate close to Arakawa's remains. The dog's death was attributed to dehydration and starvation, according to a state veterinary lab. The home was in disarray when authorities arrived, covered in loose items and food, and was infested with rats, creating a breeding ground for the deadly virus that killed Arakawa. As the officers walked around the home of the Oscar winner, their body cameras captured clothes, bags, and other items piled high on the floor, chairs, and countertops. The bathroom was chaotic, with items strewn across the vanity, while loose food appeared to have been left on the kitchen counter. Authorities also found dead rats, rat feces, and nests throughout the eight buildings that make up their estate.
