A-Level results 2025: Best student bank accounts including Lloyds and HSBC
TotallyMoney and Moneycomms have released a review of the student bank accounts currently available - here are the best options for anyone heading off to university A-Level results are due to be released tomorrow (Thursday, August 14) and many students will be wondering which bank account they should get ahead of starting their studies. TotallyMoney and Moneycomms have analysed the student accounts on offer for those embarking on higher education this September. Alastair Douglas, CEO of TotallyMoney advised: "If you're heading off to college or university this September, then it's worth shopping around and having a look to see if there's a student bank account out there that might help you save money over the next few years." He claimed that "most will try and entice you with an interest-free overdraft, but it's worth remembering that you'll have to pay this money back at some point". He added: "It's worth thinking about your finances in general, as you might be taking out a student loan and moving into shared accommodation where you're splitting bills, and you'll probably have a thin credit file too. "So download a free personal finance app to help you budget and build your credit score. That way you could be leaving higher-education with a First Class Masters in managing your money." It comes after news that Nationwide will pay bonus £760 into accounts of customers who do one thing. Santander Douglas shared his thoughts on the Santander Edge account, saying: "The Santander Edge account offers a wide range of perks, which includes cashback at a range of retailers, and a free four year Railcard. "However, you will need to make this your main account and deposit a minimum of £500 every four months. You'll also be entered into a prize draw, and you could bank up to £100k." If you choose Santander Edge, expect your first year to include a maximum overdraft of £1,500, with the required deposit each term. Year two and three will follow with the same overdraft limits. However, year four will see that amount increase to £1,800, and further still to £2,000 in year five. The incentives include: • Free four-year 16-25 Railcard (worth £115) • Access to Santander 'boosts' – cashback offers at Greggs, Tesco, Café Nero and other retailers • Entry in prize draw – prizes from £100 to £100,000 (minimum £20 guaranteed) Halifax Douglas continued, stating: "Halifax will give you £100 cash if you open an account and deposit £500 by the end of October, and 15 percent cashback at certain retailers. "You'll also get up to £90 in Deliveroo vouchers if you use the card often enough – which could come in handy if you fancy treating yourself to a takeaway." The overdraft similar to Santander, with £1,500 for the first three years, differs at the fourth year where £2,000 is offered for year four and five. The benefits of student banking with Halifax are: • £100 cash if you deposit min of £500 by October 31, 2025 • Up to £90 in Deliveroo vouchers (£15 per month from November to April, with a minimum of 20 card transactions per month to qualify) • Up to 15 percent cashback with selected retailers including Costa, Just Eat and Sainsbury's NatWest/ RBS Douglas said: "With NatWest and RBS you can get an interest-free overdraft of to £3,250 – but watch out, because you will have to repay it." He said the perks include £85 cash for signing up, and a Taste Card, giving you discounts when you eat out. Its overdraft starts at £2,000, and increases to £3,250 in your third year. Along with your account, you will receive: • £85 in cash • Four-year free Taste Card (worth £79.99 per year) HSBC Douglas stated: "The HSBC student account is a good choice if you're planning to save, as they'll pay 5.00% interest. If not, you could get an overdraft of up to £3,000 by your third year of studying." Starting at £1,000, the overdraft increases by £1,000 each year. This means that in your second year of University, you will have the option of a £2,000 overdraft, and your third year a maximum of £3,000 - which continues to the end of year five. With this account you will have access to: • 5% regular saver account Get the best deals and tips from Mirror Money WHATSAPP GROUP: Get money news and top deals straight to your phone by joining our Money WhatsApp group here. We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners. If you don't like our community, you can check out any time you like. If you're curious, you can read our Privacy Notice. Lloyds Bank Lloyds Bank gives you a £1,500 overdraft to begin your first year with, with an increase at your third year to £2,000. This will continue through to the end of your fifth year, similar to HSBC. Lloyds also offers: • £100 cash if you deposit a minimum of £500 by October 31, 2025 • Up to £90 in Deliveroo vouchers (£15 per month from November to April, with a minimum of 20 card transactions per month to qualify - the same to Halifax) • Up to 15% cashback with selected retailers including Costa, Co-Op, and Sky Nationwide The Nationwide FlexStudent requires the account holder to pay in at least £500 each term, with the promise of an initial overdraft of £1,000. Increasing up until the third year, you can expect a maximum overdraft of £2,000 in year two and £3,000 in year three. This is available till the end of your fifth years. Other perks include: • £100 cashback within 14 days of depositing £500 to your account (expiring on December 12, 2025) • 12 monthly Just Eat vouchers worth £10 each, totalling to £120 • Extra £40 Just Eat vouchers (with 2X referrals for £20 each) • Commission-free purchases and cash withdrawals abroad TSB A more basic account, the TSB overdraft remains at £1,500 throughout the course of five years. Whilst it states this amount increases over the course of the year, you will begin with the standard amount. The account also comes with: • Credit interest of 5.00 percent AER on balances up to £500 Barclays TotallyMoney claims it comes with an interest-free overdraft of up to £1,500, with no added bonuses or incentives. Beginning at £1,000 in your first year, with an initial maximum of £500 when opening, the overdraft is now set to increase to £1,500 in your second year - which will continue to the end of your time at University. Unfortunately, Barclays offer no extra benefits.

Santander quietly HIKES fee for popular account with 100,000s customers and slashes cashback
The bank is also hiking fees and slashing perks on other accounts BANK BLOW Santander quietly HIKES fee for popular account with 100,000s customers and slashes cashback Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SANTANDER has quietly made changes to a popular credit card, hiking the monthly fee and slashing cashback. New customers applying for the bank's Edge Credit Card will now face a monthly fee of £4, an increase from the previous £3. Photographer: Angel Garcia/Bloomberg via Getty Images Credit: Getty At the same time, Santander has slashed the maximum cashback customers can earn each month from £15 to £10. Plus, a major benefit for new customers has been removed - the 2% cashback on all purchases during the first year, which was previously capped at £15 per month. Existing Santander Edge credit card holders, however, can breathe a sigh of relief – for now. The bank has confirmed that the £3 monthly fee and £15 monthly cashback cap will remain in place for existing customers. They will also continue to enjoy 2% cashback on all purchases for the first year, before dropping to 1% cashback thereafter. That said, the bank hasn't committed to retaining these perks permanently, leaving current customers in limbo about the future. A Santander spokesperson said: "We regularly review our product offering to reflect wider market conditions, and as part of our refresh of our Santander Edge credit card, we will be giving all eligible customers the opportunity to earn up to £120 cashback per year, without having to be an existing Santander current account holder." The Santander Edge credit card is now available to new customers aged 18 or over, earning £10,500 or more annually, and residing permanently in the UK. Previously, applicants were required to hold a Santander current account. While the changes may seem minor, they could have a significant impact on how new customers benefit from the Santander Edge credit card. Switch bank accounts for free perks With perks reduced and fees increased, many will be left wondering whether the card still offers value for money. If you're looking to maximise your cashback, there are other options available. In fact, one credit card is currently offering up to 5% cashback on spending. The fee-free Chase debit card is a standout option, offering 1% cashback on most spending (capped at £15 per month). While there are some exclusions, it's a straightforward deal, and you only need to pass an ID check to open a new account. After the first year, you'll need to pay in £1,500 each month to continue earning cashback. If you're considering a credit card, the American Express Cashback Everyday Credit Card is a great option for those expecting a high-spend period. It offers an impressive 5% cashback on purchases for the first five months (up to £125). After this introductory period, you can earn up to 1% cashback, but you'll need to spend over £10,000 annually to qualify for ongoing rewards. For those who might not meet the £10,000 annual spending threshold, the American Express Cashback Credit Card is another strong choice. It also offers 5% cashback for the first three months (up to £125), followed by 0.75% cashback on spending up to £10,000 per year and 1.25% above that. However, this card does come with a £25 annual fee. If you frequently shop online the Amazon Barclaycard is great for its regular customers. It offers 1% cashback on Amazon purchases (boosted to 2% during Prime Days and Black Friday) and 0.25% cashback elsewhere (0.5% in the first year). It also provides an Amazon voucher upon acceptance, usually worth £20. What is cashback? CASHBACK is a type of reward offered by banks, credit card providers, and retailers where customers receive a percentage of their spending back as cash. Essentially, it's a way to earn money while making purchases. For example, if your card offers 1% cashback and you spend £100, you'll earn £1 back. Cashback can be credited to your account, deducted from your balance, or saved up for future use, depending on the provider's terms. It's often offered on everyday purchases, such as groceries, fuel, or online shopping, and may be part of a promotional deal or an ongoing benefit of your account. However, remember to check the terms and conditions, as some transactions may not qualify for cashback rewards. By using cashback offers wisely, you can usually make your money go further on purchases you'd already be making. What else is happening at Santander? Santander customers have been left outraged after the bank revealed it will start charging £120 a year for an account it promised would be "free forever". Thousands of small business and self-employed account holders are facing £9.99 monthly charges from October. This comes despite written assurances that their accounts would always remain free of fees. The changes will impact three types of business accounts: 1|2|3 Business Current Accounts, Business Everyday Current Accounts, and Business Current Accounts. The "free forever" promise applied to accounts offered by Abbey and Alliance & Leicester before the 2008 merger with Santander. The bank first attempted to introduce fees for these accounts in 2012 but backed down after customers threatened legal action. However, these accounts were shifted to the Business Everyday account in 2015, which did not include the "free forever" promise. From October 1, these accounts will be closed, and customers will be automatically switched to Santander's new Business Current Account – Classic. Under the new structure, every Business Current Account – Classic will incur a £9.99 monthly fee, regardless of the type of account customers previously held. While some accounts were free, others offered additional benefits with charges as high as £40 per month. The bank is closing its 123 Lite current account, which offers up to 3% cashback on household bills for a £2 monthly fee, on August 21. Customers affected by the closure will be automatically switched to Santander's Everyday Current Account. This account has no monthly fee but does not include cashback benefits. Meanwhile, customers of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland will soon lose the ability to deposit their cheques at any of the 11,500 Post Office branches nationwide. From December 31 this year, Lloyds Banking Group will withdraw this service for all customers.
