Coimbatore contract sanitary workers threaten to intensify protest

COIMBATORE: The city corporation's contract sanitary workers associated with various trade unions said they would resume their protests on Saturday to press for their demands. The workers said they would intensify their protest next week. The workers' demands include a hike in their wages. They demand that the corporation make their job permanent. The workers alleged that there was caste-based discrimination at the workplace. On Thursday, more than 30 sanitary workers were detained by the city police when they staged a road roko on the Town Hall Road. They were released in the evening. Santhanam Kumar, a contract worker who was among those who were detained on Thursday, told TOI that though the workers had planned a mass gathering, not many turned up. "The workers were warned they would be suspended. We submitted a letter on Aug 13 that we would be protesting for our rights on Thursday. On Aug 14 morning, an oral order to suspend all those taking part in the protest was circulated in all wards and so not many workers turned out for the protest. Tamil Nadu Selvam, general secretary of Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Scavengers General Employees Union, noted that without any direction, permanent workers were being shifted to various locations away from where they used to work. While commenting on these allegations, a senior corporation official noted that no such dismissal or suspension orders had been officially issued. "In case there is complaint against any supervisor or sanitary inspectors, action can be initiated based on evidence," he said. Wage hike: Contract sanitary workers feel deceived by Coimbatore corporation

Coimbatore: Contract sanitary workers on Saturday accused the city corporation of deceiving them by promising to hike their wages to around Rs681 per day from around Rs560, with effect from May 1, 2025. The temporary workers said it was following a protest in April that the city corporation agreed to pay them around Rs681 per day. "The civic body said the gross salary it could offer was Rs20,454 per month. Officials told us that the revised salary will come into effect from May 1. But in May, those of us who worked for the entire month without taking any leave were paid only around Rs16,000 after deductions. It looks like the civic body is deducting both the employee's and employer's contributions to the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme and the provident fund (PF) from our salaries. If it does so, it's unfair," said one of the contract workers, who didn't want to be named. After receiving the salary for the month of May, more than 2,000 contract sanitary workers had taken out nearly a week-long protest in the first week of June, seeking the revised wage. Following a series of negotiations with the workers' unions, the corporation had agreed to pay them Rs681 per day for 30 working days, including four weekly off days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The workers' demand for payslips was also accepted, and the payslip for May was issued in July. Commenting on the salary mentioned in the payslip, Tamil Nadu Selvam, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Scavengers General Employees Union, said the city corporation was deceiving the contract sanitary workers. "The payslip shows that both the employee's and employer's contributions to the insurance scheme and PF were deducted from the workers' salaries, which is against the law. Say, if the monthly salary is Rs20,400, one should be paid approximately Rs18,800 after the deductions for ESI and PF. Instead, they were paid just Rs16,000," he said. Santhanam Kumar, one of the contract workers, wondered whether the law allows for double deduction for the ESI and PF benefits. "If we are still getting only Rs16,000, what difference did the negotiations make? Drivers are paid better than the sanitary workers. We are the ones who clear the city's waste, regardless of our health, family and timing. Even if a worker goes on leave for two days, the accumulated waste is still cleared by the same worker. " While TOI made several attempts to reach corporation officials for a comment on the allegations raised by the contract sanitary workers, no one was available for a comment.

Coimbatore Corporation contract sanitary workers boycott work demanding salary hike

The contract workers affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC)also demanded that the civic body furnish their ESI and PF details. COIMBATORE: Around 300 contract sanitary workers of the Coimbatore Corporation on Wednesday boycotted work and staged a protest demanding a salary hike. The contract workers affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) demanded that the civic body furnish their ESI and PF details. The daily wage of the sanitary workers had already been revised to Rs 720 from Rs 488. However, the workers alleged that they were not paid the revised salary. Santhanam Kumar, who has been working as a contract employee for the corporation since 2010, said, "Over the last 15 years, the basic wages have always been a problem and continue to be the same. They do not reveal the salary nor provide a salary slip.' 'Managing the family is impossible with the wages we are being paid. We are paid around Rs 15,000 every month. Of this, Rs 5,000 goes for house rent, Rs 5,000 for kids' education fees and the rest for household expenses. We are left with no savings as such. My son has also become a sanitary worker since I can't afford his college fees," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sumatera Utara: AI guru Andrew Ng recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Aroun... Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo Santhanam said the situation of most of the workers was the same. "The current system continues to suppress the economically backward people", he alleged. Another worker said, "Every time a new contractor comes, they issue an order with a revised wage. But none of it seems to be implemented. The permanent sanitary workers of the corporation are well paid. But we are not. Why is there a huge difference when the work done is the same?" A senior corporation official said a special camp for the settlement of pending ESI and PF dues would be held next week. 'Everything will be handed over to the new contractor. The workers' payment would stand at Rs 640 without deductions. Discussions with the contractor are under way to provide the revised salary of Rs. 720 to the workers,' the official said. He said the new contractor had assured transparency of transactions by enabling an SMS notification of the deductions every month.
