Coimbatore contract sanitary workers threaten to intensify protest

Time of India3 days ago
COIMBATORE: The city corporation's contract sanitary workers associated with various trade unions said they would resume their protests on Saturday to press for their demands.
The workers said they would intensify their protest next week.
The workers' demands include a hike in their wages. They demand that the corporation make their job permanent. The workers alleged that there was caste-based discrimination at the workplace.
On Thursday, more than 30 sanitary workers were detained by the city police when they staged a road roko on the Town Hall Road. They were released in the evening.
Santhanam Kumar, a contract worker who was among those who were detained on Thursday, told TOI that though the workers had planned a mass gathering, not many turned up.
"The workers were warned they would be suspended. We submitted a letter on Aug 13 that we would be protesting for our rights on Thursday. On Aug 14 morning, an oral order to suspend all those taking part in the protest was circulated in all wards and so not many workers turned out for the protest.
'
'We have added a few more demands because only the sanitary worker gets caught for the ill practices of sanitary inspectors and supervisors.

The govt should transfer the sanitary inspectors every three years," he said.

Selvam, general secretary of Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Scavengers General Employees Union, noted that without any direction, permanent workers were being shifted to various locations away from where they used to work.
While commenting on these allegations, a senior corporation official noted that no such dismissal or suspension orders had been officially issued. "In case there is complaint against any supervisor or sanitary inspectors, action can be initiated based on evidence," he said.

Man flies drone over Pilibhit Tiger Reserve's core area; probe on

File image used for representative purpose. PILIBHIT: Authorities at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) have initiated action against a man identified as Arbaz Ansari of Pilibhit city for allegedly flying a drone over the Mala Forest Range, the core area of the reserve, and posting a 30-second video on social media. Officials said the clip, uploaded from an account named Pilibhit Zone, was shot by flying the drone from the Pilibhit-Madhotanda road that cuts through the core forest. The Mala range has one of the highest tiger densities in PTR, and authorities said 'such filming could endanger wildlife safety'. Divisional forest officer (DFO) Manish Singh said, 'Ansari had neither police clearance nor forest department permission. Flying drones in the core area is a clear violation. The act is punishable under the Wildlife Protection Act. Filming inside PTR is permitted only to accredited documentary makers working on wildlife conservation. Such footage can even be misused by poachers.' He added, 'A case is being prepared and the accused is likely to be arrested. The range officer has been directed to trace his whereabouts.' ASP Vikram Dahiya said, 'Operating camera drones without police clearance is a cognisable offence. We suspect the video may have been made simply to gain traction on social media. The motive will be reviewed in the preliminary inquiry and strict legal action will follow.' Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
