He said the initiative by the Sarawak Syariah Judiciary Department (JKSS), developed in collaboration with Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS), marks a major milestone in the state's digital transformation of its Islamic judiciary. 'I-Syariah is a smart digital platform that integrates various components of the state's Syariah judiciary services, and is built upon digital technology and artificial intelligence. 'This is not merely a technical transformation. It reflects the high commitment of JKSS in supporting Sarawak's digitalisation agenda,' he said when officiating at the Sarawak National Syariah Convention (KoSKeS) 2025 at the Sarawak Islamic Complex Hall, here yesterday. Awang Tengah said the system would significantly strengthen e-Government services by enhancing online accessibility, enabling digital case management, and ensuring safe and integrated data handling, all of which align with the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030. He also emphasised that I-Syariah not only speeds up administrative tasks such as marriage registration and case processing, but also serves as a digital bridge connecting citizens to the Syariah courts both locally and internationally. Nevertheless, he pointed out that while the system harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI), it must be used responsibly by those operating it. 'AI holds vast potential for assisting in reference searches, analysing cases, compiling documents, and producing quicker data-driven judgments, but more importantly, these technological advances must remain aligned with Syariah principles and the values of Maqasid Syariah, with justice at the core.' Awang Tengah said that the system is a foundational step toward creating a sustainable and inclusive digital ecosystem, propelling Sarawak toward its goal of becoming a high-income state by 2030. 'We want I-Syariah to become a model of advanced, just, and holistic smart Syariah governance, but also one that unites Islamic values with the strength of modern technology,' he said. In his speech, the Deputy Premier expressed hope that KoSKeS would serve as a platform for meaningful knowledge exchange and regional cooperation among Syariah judges, academics, researchers, and policymakers. The convention, which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS), gathers delegates from across Malaysia, as well as neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei. Awang Tengah highlighted that the theme of this year's convention, 'Digital Revolution in Syariah Judiciary of Sarawak', was timely as the world enters the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He said the Syariah judiciary must take a strategic role in leveraging technology, especially AI, to remain efficient and relevant. 'With the efforts by JKSS and partnerships with local universities, Sarawak is poised to lead in Syariah judicial innovation,' he said. Among those present at the event were State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, MIS president Datuk Misnu Taha, and Sarawak Syariah Chief Judge Datu Awang Suhaili Ledi. During a working visit to the Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) headquarters today, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo told reporters that he had discussed the matter with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and is optimistic that a decision will be made in the near future. 'This morning, during my discussion with the Premier, he expressed that he would study the matter and will make a decision accordingly. 'I am confident that the decision we will receive will likely be positive. However, the Premier must first examine the proposal thoroughly. I will also be engaging with other states to encourage similar initiatives,' he said. Gobind stressed the importance of having a clear legal framework to define the scope and nature of data involved, outline procedures for access, and ensure proper security measures are in place. He emphasised that any approved data sharing must be strictly for the intended purposes. 'I view the discussions as positive, as we all understand the importance of this matter. I will also be engaging with other chief ministers and menteri besar (MB) across the country,' he said. He also mentioned that a team from the Digital Ministry, particularly legal officers, would be sent to Sarawak to present and explain the drafting process of the federal legislation, with the hope that a similar framework could be adopted at the state level. In addition, Gobind praised Sarawak's digital initiatives through SAINS, describing the state as one of the most advanced in the early adoption of public sector digital transformation. 'We are working towards developing a unified digital platform to integrate federal and state government services. 'This approach not only accelerates the overall digital transformation process but also reduces costs, as many services have already been digitalised at the state level,' he said. Gobind noted that his visits to several states, including Penang, Selangor, and Sarawak, are part of the ministry's efforts to assess each state's readiness to implement a nationwide data-sharing initiative. State Cooperation Essential To Ensure Success Of Malaysia Digital
GENERAL KUCHING, May 16 (Bernama) -- The Digital Ministry aims to ensure that all government services can be accessed through a national digital platform in line with the Malaysia Digital initiative, said its Minister, Gobind Singh Deo. He said the approach requires close cooperation between the federal government and state governments, especially in the aspect of secure and orderly data sharing. 'In the past few weeks, I have visited Penang, Selangor and this time Sarawak to see for myself the readiness of the states to implement digital transformation. 'We see that many states have successfully digitised their respective services, so now we want to establish cooperation so that there is no need to repeat the same process at the central level,' he said at a press conference after a visit to the Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) office here, today. Gobind said Penang and Selangor have expressed their willingness to cooperate with the Federal government in terms of data sharing. Meanwhile, Sarawak, he said, also showed positive feedback after a discussion session this morning with Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. 'We passed the Data Sharing Bill in Parliament in December last year and it came into effect in April. "But this law only involves data between federal government agencies. Therefore, we encourage state governments to create similar bills to enable data sharing is done comprehensively," he said. According to him, data is an important element in the use of technology and artificial intelligence (AI), hence the security aspects and procedures for data use need to be detailed in each legal framework.
