Awg Tengah: Sarawak eyes top spot as SE Asia's investment hub with focus on sustainability, innovation
Awang Tengah speaks during the event. – Ukas photo KUCHING (May 3): Sarawak will strive to emerge as a leading investment hub in Southeast Asia by offering a broad range of economic opportunities rooted in sustainability and technological innovation, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report shared on Facebook, he stated that the state is targeting to achieve high-income and developed status by 2030 through a range of strategic initiatives. 'Sarawak's strategic location on the island of Borneo places it in an ideal position to access the Asian market, which is home to over 4.5 billion people, equivalent to 60 per cent of the global population. 'With a landmass spanning 12.4 million hectares, Sarawak is endowed with a wealth of natural resources including fertile agricultural land, untapped forests, minerals, petroleum and natural gas,' he added. He highlighted this in his welcoming address at the Sarawak Connects 2025 event held in London on Friday, which was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Awang Tengah said the six key sectors that had been identified under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 were manufacturing, agriculture, forestry, tourism, mining, and services — all of which offer substantial investment potential, with a strong emphasis on balancing economic progress with environmental preservation. Moreover, he highlighted Sarawak's ambition to position itself as a regional leader in green energy, pointing to its vast potential of 20,000 megawatts in hydropower capacity. He said major hydroelectric projects including the Batang Ai, Bakun, and Murum dams currently supply over 60 per cent of the state's energy mix. 'The concept of cascading dams and hydrogen economy initiatives has placed Sarawak at the forefront of global efforts in sustainable hydrogen production and distribution. 'Sarawak's investment offerings are also aligned with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, as well as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),' he added. Sarawak offers stable, long-term investment climate with roadmap to 2035, says Premier
Abang Johari (third left) and others in a group photo during the event. – Ukas photo KUCHING (May 3): Sarawak has a consistent development policy framework that offers strong long-term investment and growth prospects, underpinned by political stability and a rational populace, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said the Sarawak government had outlined a clear development roadmap up to 2030, and is now planning for the next phase through to 2035. He stressed that such long-term planning is crucial for investors to assess the risks, returns and sustainability of their investments. 'What I want to emphasise is that Sarawak is a region with enormous potential for future growth. That is the first point. Secondly, we enjoy political stability, and the people of Sarawak are rational. 'Thirdly, there must be a well defined roadmap. Policies must remain consistent regardless of who holds the office of Premier. They must always be forward-looking. 'We have already laid the groundwork up to 2030 and are now planning for 2035. With this kind of environment, investors are in a good position to make informed evaluations,' he told the Fireside Chat Session held in conjunction with his working visit to London yesterday. Abang Johari said investors naturally seek countries that are peaceful and secure and Sarawak offers such an environment conducive to investment. 'These are qualities that Sarawak possesses, and they are truly impressive. Among the 56 Commonwealth nations, not all uphold the rule of law as we do. 'Security is another vital consideration. While many countries have these characteristics, there is also growing recognition of the exceptional opportunities that Sarawak has to offer,' he said in a report shared on the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) Facebook page. Also present were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Law, MA63 and Federal-State Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, State Attorney General Dato Sri Saferi Ali, Sarawak Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, and Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel. Sarawak premier: Ignore outsiders' cynical outlook on state's future, govt's plans sound and strategic
KUCHING, April 28 — Sarawakians have been called on to remain optimistic about the state's future and not be influenced by pessimistic external perspectives. According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the Sarawak government continues to move forward in implementing mega development projects guided by sound and strategic financial planning. 'The Sarawak government will not launch any project without considering the entire economic ecosystem, including infrastructure, finance, workforce, and future growth,' he said at the Affin Bank Aidilfitri dinner here last night. In his response to pessimistic views from certain quarters regarding Sarawak's ability to implement large-scale projects, Abang Johari stressed the state government carries out thorough planning before embarking on any development initiative. 'The Sarawak government knows what is being done. Before launching any project, we have made careful calculations, including in terms of infrastructure, financing, and manpower,' he said. The premier added that in the first five years of his leadership, the focus was on building basic infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and increasing water and energy supply to interior areas. He pointed out all these were financed using the state's own funds with total expenditure reaching RM36 billion to date. He said the increased revenue made by Sarawak has enabled the state to boldly make strategic investments such as in Affin Bank, in addition to strengthening its financial position through the establishment of a sovereign fund, which now stands at over RM8 billion. According to him, all mega projects such as the development of inland ports, new international airports, as well as gas and hydrogen-based industries are planned taking into account long implementation times, lead times, and the need to develop the local workforce simultaneously. 'This mega project requires seven to 10 years to be fully implemented. Therefore, we have prepared a long-term financial plan, including a repayment plan based on an amortisation system, to ensure the stability of Sarawak's economy,' he explained. Among those present at the event were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Affin Bank Berhad chairman Datuk Agil Natt and chief executive officer Datuk Wan Razly Abdullah Wan Ali, Affin Islamic Bank Berhad chairman Musa Abdul Malek, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, and Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan. — The Borneo Post
