A Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas officiated at the event at the Heroes Monument in Taman Budaya here on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. In his speech, Abang Johari said Sarawakians must realise that the peace and prosperity experienced today were not achieved overnight but through long and continuous struggle. 'The privileges we enjoy today came at the cost of great sacrifices by the nation's warriors. It took tremendous effort and the ultimate sacrifice by our heroes to defend every inch of our beloved land and their blood, sweat and hardship laid the foundation for the peace we enjoy today,' said the Premier. He said Warriors' Day serves as a symbol of appreciation and remembrance for those who fought to uphold the nation's sovereignty, from the pre-independence era through to the present day. 'Symbolically, this day reminds us of the courage of those who stood firm against threats to our sovereignty and their sacrifices must be remembered for all time, as they shaped the civilisation we live in today,' he said. The Premier called on Malaysians to remain grateful for the harmony and well-being enjoyed today. 'All the comfort and safety we experience are the direct result of the sacrifices of our comrades in the past. This peace is a divine gift, born of their bravery and hardship,' he said. He also urged the public to continue honouring the memory of fallen heroes by praying for them and extending support to their families. Among those present were Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datu Buckland Bangik, and Eastern Field Command Health Services chief Dr Shamsul Bahary Muhamad. Year 3 Sarawak pupil makes Malaysia proud in Dance World Cup

KUCHING: Dion Das Louis, a Year 3 pupil of SK Green Road here, has made Malaysia proud when he won silver at the final of Dance World Cup in Burgos, Spain, today. Dion, better known as the Little Bornean Birdie, represented Malaysia in the Mini Solo National and Folklore category. He performed the Iban traditional dance known as "Ajat", which symbolises two of Sarawak's most iconic birds, the majestic burung ruai (great argus) and the burung kenyalang (hornbill). Facing stiff competition from 34 international dancers, Dion scored an outstanding 93.8 per cent, missing the gold medal by a razor-thin margin of just 0.3 per cent. Nevertheless, it was a proud moment for Sarawak and Malaysia on the global stage. According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Dion's two-minute music composition, which captivated the judges with its rich Bornean rhythms and emotive storytelling, was created by Sarawak's very own Sada Borneo, with an additional track provided by the acclaimed world music band At Adau. His stunning costume – a bold and elegant fusion of tradition and innovation – was designed by Gilbert Headhunter, a Sarawakian designer based in Kuala Lumpur, known for his edgy takes on indigenous fashion. According to Ukas, the achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of generous sponsors and cultural champions. Dion's trip was sponsored by the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Sarawak Land and Rehabilitation Authority, Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, Ghee Hua Group of Companies, Kelab Kaban Golf Samarahan, International Education Legacy Foundation and the United Asia Entrepreneur Chamber of Commerce.

Embed values of humanity to stay ahead of AI, journalists told

Abdullah delivering his speech at the closing ceremony of the SMeC 2025 today. – Photo by Jude Toyat KUCHING (July 3): Journalists, content creators and digital influencers must uphold and embed values of humanity in their work to safeguard society from the risks of dehumanisation brought by advancing technologies, said Datuk Abdullah Saidol. The Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Sarawak Public Communication Unit) stressed that the essence of humanity must be preserved in a world increasingly driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation. 'I would like to encourage our journalists, reporters — whether certified or not — Facebookers, TikTokers, and the like, to embed within themselves the spirit and values of humanity. 'Distance your souls from hatred and such. That is what will differentiate us from whatever technology we may see in the future — it is our human values,' he said during the closing of the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025 here today. Abdullah, who is also the organising chairman of SMeC 2025, emphasised that while embracing innovation is crucial, it must not come at the cost of empathy, ethics, and human connection. He reflected on the importance of emotional understanding and cultural sensitivity, noting that Malaysia's diversity in ethnicity, religion, culture, and language is something that AI, now or perhaps ever, may never fully comprehend. He also recalled a conversation with the late Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, who once asked him when he had last taken his children for a picnic—a question he described as a metaphor for the fading sense of personal connection in today's fast-paced, technology-driven world. Abdullah pointed out that rural connectivity and digital literacy remain significant challenges in Sarawak's digital journey. 'We are talking about AI, but some areas still have no internet. There are towers, but they're not functioning,' he said. 'We must reduce the information gap, the understanding gap, and the awareness gap between what the government aims to do and what the people experience.' He also called for more discussions on the economic impact of AI adoption on the public and media professionals, pointing out the rising costs of digital tools. 'Reporters told me they have to pay RM90 or RM300 a month for apps that help with their work, and yet the company doesn't cover it. 'We need to factor in these hidden costs when we talk about embracing new technologies,' he said. Abdullah added that future initiatives should include policymakers, regulators, and legal experts to explore digital governance and AI regulation in greater depth. He concluded by thanking organisers and volunteers from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) and Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) Sarawak, expressing hope for continued collaboration in advancing Sarawak's digital agenda.
