Year 3 Sarawak pupil makes Malaysia proud in Dance World Cup
Dion, better known as the Little Bornean Birdie, represented Malaysia in the Mini Solo National and Folklore category. He performed the Iban traditional dance known as "Ajat", which symbolises two of Sarawak's most iconic birds, the majestic burung ruai (great argus) and the burung kenyalang (hornbill).
Facing stiff competition from 34 international dancers, Dion scored an outstanding 93.8 per cent, missing the gold medal by a razor-thin margin of just 0.3 per cent.
Nevertheless, it was a proud moment for Sarawak and Malaysia on the global stage.
According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Dion's two-minute music composition, which captivated the judges with its rich Bornean rhythms and emotive storytelling, was created by Sarawak's very own Sada Borneo, with an additional track provided by the acclaimed world music band At Adau.
His stunning costume – a bold and elegant fusion of tradition and innovation – was designed by Gilbert Headhunter, a Sarawakian designer based in Kuala Lumpur, known for his edgy takes on indigenous fashion.
According to Ukas, the achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of generous sponsors and cultural champions.
Dion's trip was sponsored by the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Sarawak Land and Rehabilitation Authority, Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, Ghee Hua Group of Companies, Kelab Kaban Golf Samarahan, International Education Legacy Foundation and the United Asia Entrepreneur Chamber of Commerce.

Cheyenne Tan KUCHING (Aug 4): Two-time Oscar-nominated Sarawakian filmmaker Cheyenne Tan has been officially inducted as a national active member of the US' Television Academy in its Documentary Programming Peer Group, making her eligible to vote for the prestigious Primetime Emmy Awards. As a member of the academy, Tan, who is originally from Kuching and now based in Los Angeles, California, will have access to exclusive industry events, networking opportunities, private screenings, and annual voting privileges in the Primetime Emmys. 'I am incredibly grateful to be welcomed into the Television Academy. It's not just an honour; it's also a responsibility I take seriously. 'I hope to help elevate work that's not just excellent television but also bold, nuanced, and reflective of the diverse world we live in,' she told The Borneo Post in an email correspondence. She said that as someone working in non-fiction, she has witnessed firsthand how award attention can open doors for vital, under-represented voices. 'Awards matter. They impact what gets funded, distributed, and platformed, and I want to use that influence responsibly,' she added. The Television Academy, which was founded in 1946, is dedicated to honouring excellence in television. Membership is offered to industry professionals actively working in television production and distribution, with eligibility based on peer group affiliation and a nominated or significant body of work. Tan shared that as an active voting member for the Emmys, she will be eligible to cast votes in the general programme categories, which include Outstanding Drama Series, Comedy Series, Limited Series and so on. 'However, only specific peer groups can vote in the other categories. Since I am in the Documentary Programming Peer Group, I can vote in the documentary or non-fiction programmes as well. 'Only peer groups vote for the specific peer group categories, so, for example, actors vote for actors, directors for directors, and in my case, documentarians vote for their fellow documentarians,' she explained. Tan's notable producing credits for television include 'Turning Point: The Vietnam War' (Netflix, 2025), a five-part docu-series that documents the Vietnam War, and its impact on those involved; 'The Romantics' (Netflix, 2023), a four-part documentary series about the history of Bollywood; and an Emmy nomination for 'Through Our Eyes: Shelter' (HBO Max, 2021) that follows three unhoused children and their parents over one summer in Los Angeles as they seek steady housing. Viviana Lin receives emotional welcome in Kuching, vows to honour Iban heritage at Miss Grand International

The 25-year-old beauty queen, who made history as the first Sarawakian and Iban woman to win the national title, said she is determined to proudly showcase her heritage on the global stage at Miss Grand International (MGI) 2025 in Bangkok this October. 'First of all, I'm so happy to be here. As the first Sarawakian and Iban lady to win this title, I will do my very best,' she told reporters during a press conference at the airport. 'This is a dream come true, and I truly want to represent my culture at the international level so that people around the world can see what I have to offer.' When asked to respond to criticism from some netizens regarding the design of her evening gown at the national competition, which was said to be too revealing and unrepresentative of Malaysian culture, Viviana clarified that her outfit was actually inspired by the traditional attire of Iban warriors. 'For the national-level competition, the design I wore was inspired by the Iban warrior. It featured a 'sirat' element, which reflects our culture,' she explained, adding that the final design for her MGI 2025 evening gown will be revealed in due course. 'I'll be working with my team to decide on the next gown. So stay tuned, I'll be revealing it soon,' she added.
