Row over ‘Sardar Ji 3': trend of cross-border collaborations in Punjabi film industry unlikely to sustain
Even as Bollywood has refused to cast Pakistani actors following the 2016 Uri attack, the Punjabi film industry continues to find itself entangled in the debate, more so now in the wake of the controversy surrounding Sardar Ji 3, the Diljit Dosanjh-starrer that features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a prominent role. The film, which has not yet been released in India, is currently collecting huge profits in Pakistan and overseas, once again sparking a debate over the involvement of actors from the neighbouring country in Indian Punjabi films. Speaking to The Indian Express, Punjabi singer-music director Ravinder Ranguwal said, 'The Punjabi film industry continued casting Pakistani actors, or rather, started featuring them more actively post-2016. All roles involving Pakistani actors were shot overseas.' A major driver of this collaboration, industry insiders say, is the shared linguistic and cultural heritage between Charda Punjab (East Punjab in India) and Lehnda Punjab (West Punjab in Pakistan). Since both regions speak Punjabi, films that blend talent from both sides enjoy wider acceptability. 'The shared language and culture create an organic appeal in both Punjabs, which naturally enhances commercial success,' Ranguwal added. However, he admitted that the situation might change now. 'After all the controversies that followed the Pahalgam terror attack, I don't think the Punjabi industry will cast Pakistani actors in future projects. Films that had already been signed are a different matter altogether, given the financial stakes involved,' he said. The Chal Mera Putt franchise stands as a prime example of this trend. The first instalment, released in 2019, was a blockbuster and featured Pakistani actors like Iftikhar Thakur, Nasir Chinyoti, and Akram Udas in prominent roles. Its success was followed by Chal Mera Putt 2 (2020) and Chal Mera Putt 3 (2021), both of which included even more Pakistani talent and enjoyed massive popularity, particularly among the Punjabi diaspora in both countries and overseas. According to an announcement made earlier this year, Chal Mera Putt 4 is scheduled for release in August, but with growing scrutiny of cross-border collaborations, the filmmakers have yet to disclose whether any changes have been made to the cast. Besides this franchise, several other Punjabi films in recent years — including Maa Da Ladla, Honeymoon, and Carry on Jatta 3 — have featured Pakistani actors in significant roles. In fact, in the last four to five years, blending artists from both sides of Punjab had almost become a norm in the industry. Now, with Sardar Ji 3 facing potential non-release in India due to its Pakistani cast, concerns are being raised about whether Chal Mera Putt 3 will meet the same fate. The film reportedly features an even more extensive lineup of Pakistani actors than the Dosanjh movie. Following the Pahalgam attack, actor Iftikhar Thakur — one of the most celebrated Pakistani comedians involved in cross-border Punjabi films — had allegedly made controversial remarks directed at India, prompting a fresh wave of criticism. 'There's no shortage of talent in Punjab. We don't necessarily need to rely on Pakistani actors to make successful films,' Ranguwal had said then. While the shared language and commercial potential of such collaborations have been key motivators, industry voices now question whether Punjabi cinema should follow Bollywood's path in phasing out Pakistani actors altogether. 'Even Hindi films are widely watched in Pakistan. So, if Bollywood can thrive without casting Pakistani actors, Punjabi cinema can also evolve with local talent,' said an insider from the Punjabi industry.

Diljit Dosanjh facing trolling over Sardar Ji 3 Diljit has been facing a lot of backlash over the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in 'Sardar Ji 3'. The Pakistani actress had criticised Operation Sindoor, India's counter-terror strike, which followed the dastardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April this year. Mann backs Diljit: ‘Sardar Ji 3' filmed before Pahalgam attack'
Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday came to the defence of Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh , who has been under fire over his film 'Sardar Ji 3' starring Pakistani actor Hania Aamir. Mann said the film's shooting had been wrapped up before the Pahalgam terrorist attack this April. The CM's statement came even as he projected Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal as the future Prime Minister of India. Speaking at a function to announce the extension of the state's health cover scheme, Mann cited shared Punjabi culture between the two nations to defend Dosanjh. He acknowledged the pain caused by the terorr attack, but criticised the decision not to allow the film's screening and accusations of Dosanjh being a "gadaar" (traitor), contrasting it with the upcoming visit of the Pakistan hockey team to India. Mann implied a double standard, stating: "They use us like sheep and goats. Fight now, now be alright." Later, in a statement, Mann said Punjabis were unfairly targeted by "self-proclaimed nationalists", citing the example of Dosanjh's film. He criticised the Centre's handling of the recent conflict with Pakistan, saying that Punjab suffered adversely while the nation witnessed "political theatrics like Operation Sindoor". "The Pahalgam incident was painful but the shooting for the film was done before it. Still, they say the film cannot be released and labelled him (Dosanjh) a 'gadaar' (traitor). But now when Pakistan's (hockey) team will come to play, it is fine," he said. Without naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mann took a veiled jab, referencing leaders who "come sporting army caps". Criticising BJP, he said, "They even started distributing vermilion in Modi's name after 'Operation Sindoor'. Wherever he goes, he says he has an old connection with that place. 'Jidde naal nata hai, ude naal baratda nahin' (He doesn't interact with the one he has a relationship with)." Mann called Kejriwal "the future Prime Minister", envisioning a transformative change for the country under an "IIT pass out" leader and a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer who understood the economics of the state. He drew a parallel to the US, suggesting Americans might be regretting their vote for Donald Trump, known for his wild statements, and claimed that both Modi and Trump had a similar style of functioning. "Please live and let live," he said. Boxes Slams Bihar revision In a reference to the Election Commission of India's (ECI) new directive on family details for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Mann criticised the move. "Modi saab is now asking for even names of grandparents to be able to cast a vote. If my mother's family migrated from Pakistan, how will she get her family data when ties with Pakistan are strained and no documents can be procured?" he said. Laughs off Majithia twirl Pointing to news cameras, chief minister Bhagwant Mann light-heartedly remarked that they sought his comments on SAD leader Bikram Majithia, but he would refrain. "It is the job of the judiciary," he stated. "I don't have to do anything." Gesturing Majithia's signature style of twirling his moustache, Mann concluded: "This doesn't work here." Read this: 'Kejriwal Model' The Punjabi edition of a book titled 'Kejriwal Model', authored by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) functionary Jasmine Shah, was launched at an event attended by AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, and former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia on Tuesday. Shah contrasted the 'Kejriwal Model' with the 'Gujarat Model', stating that while the former revolved around public welfare, education, health, transport, and environment. He added the Gujarat Model largely benefitted corporates.

Exclusive: T-Series will continue to collaborate with Diljit Dosanjh after Border 2
Diljit Dosanjh and Bhushan Kumar Speculation around Diljit Dosanjh 's future in Bollywood has been a hot topic of late, even as he continues to work on Border 2. A few days ago, the actor-singer shared a behind-the-scenes video from the film's set, effectively ending rumours about his replacement. However, questions remain about whether producers will continue to back him in future projects. The controversy stems from the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Amir in Diljit's Punjabi film Sardar Ji 3, which released overseas but not in India. In response, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) called for a ban on Dosanjh and his upcoming releases. Following Diljit's social media post from the Border 2 set, several reports claimed that FWICE had lifted the ban after producer Bhushan Kumar requested reconsideration, citing that over 50 per cent of the film had already been completed, and a re-cast would cause major financial losses. While FWICE allowed Border 2 to proceed, it maintained that non-cooperation with the actor would continue for future projects. Some reports went a step further, suggesting that Bhushan Kumar had assured FWICE that T-Series would not work with Diljit after Border 2. However, a source close to T-Series has now refuted these claims. 'These reports are completely baseless,' the source told Mumbai Mirror. 'T-Series has always shared a strong and respectful working relationship with Diljit and looks forward to collaborating with him on future projects. '
