KSRTC resumes recruitment after eight years, issues appointment orders to 2,000 new driver-cum-conductor recruits
After eight years, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has resumed large-scale recruitment, with appointment orders issued on Tuesday to 2,000 driver-cum-conductor candidates. The event took place at the KSRTC central office in Bengaluru, where Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy symbolically distributed appointment letters to 51 candidates. The long-delayed recruitment process, originally notified in 2020, was halted owing to the COVID-19 outbreak. It was revived in October 2023 after government approval, and the final selection list was published on June 12, 2025, following a fully computerised and merit-based process, including skill tests conducted at Humnabad and Hassan training centres. Mr. Reddy said: 'We have conducted a transparent recruitment process and I urge the recruits to serve with responsibility, especially in ensuring the safety and comfort of women and students.' The KSRTC has made 2,500 appointments in the last 18 months, including compassionate jobs to 209 dependents. 'Other employee welfare initiatives include the ₹1 crore Sarige Suraksha accident insurance and a revised Family Welfare Scheme offering ₹10 lakh compensation for natural deaths. Computerised counselling for the new recruits is under way and all appointees are expected to join duty by July 5, 2025,' a senior KSRTC official said. Meanwhile, the lack of regular recruitment over the years had led to a severe staff shortage in KSRTC, affecting the quality of services. Ravi Kumar (name changed), a KSRTC driver with 15 years of experience, said: 'It's a relief that new staff have finally been appointed. There was a serious shortage, and many of us were unable to take timely leaves because of the workload. With more trips being added and responsibilities increasing, the new recruits will definitely ease the pressure on existing employees.'

Kins of two deceased KSRTC staffers get Rs 1 crore each
BENGALURU: For the first time, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) paid a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to an employee who lost his right leg in an accident. This apart, the bus corporation paid Rs 1 crore each to two dependents of deceased employees under the Sarige Suraksha scheme. The transport utility also paid Rs 10 lakh each to 31 dependents of deceased employees, totalling Rs 3.10 crore, under the family welfare compensation scheme. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and KSRTC vice-chairman Mohammed Rizwan Nawab distributed the compensation cheques under to the dependents on Saturday. Reddy said, 'The bus corporation is in a good position today because of the staff who work day and night. It is the responsibility of the corporation to take care of the families of deceased employees. In this regard, 1,000 jobs were given to the dependents on compassionate grounds in all four corporations.' He advised the families to utilise the compensation for their children's education, house construction and other works and not loan the money to anyone in the hope of getting interest. He said to protect the health of the workers, the KSRTC Arogya scheme has also been implemented, enabling them to get cashless treatment at more than 300 hospitals across the state. To date, more than 56,000 staff/dependents have received treatment under this scheme. Sunilkumar B D, a driver-cum-conductor of Arkalgudu depot, Hassan division, who lost his right leg in a collision with a lorry near the Kunigal bypass on March 25 last year, received a compensation of Rs 25 lakh. The corporation also bore his full medical expenditure of Rs 4.85 lakh. He has been provided with light duty as a technical assistant.
