KSRTC resumes recruitment after eight years, issues appointment orders to 2,000 new driver-cum-conductor recruits

The Hindu5 hours ago

After eight years, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has resumed large-scale recruitment, with appointment orders issued on Tuesday to 2,000 driver-cum-conductor candidates.
The event took place at the KSRTC central office in Bengaluru, where Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy symbolically distributed appointment letters to 51 candidates.
The long-delayed recruitment process, originally notified in 2020, was halted owing to the COVID-19 outbreak. It was revived in October 2023 after government approval, and the final selection list was published on June 12, 2025, following a fully computerised and merit-based process, including skill tests conducted at Humnabad and Hassan training centres.
Mr. Reddy said: 'We have conducted a transparent recruitment process and I urge the recruits to serve with responsibility, especially in ensuring the safety and comfort of women and students.'
The KSRTC has made 2,500 appointments in the last 18 months, including compassionate jobs to 209 dependents. 'Other employee welfare initiatives include the ₹1 crore Sarige Suraksha accident insurance and a revised Family Welfare Scheme offering ₹10 lakh compensation for natural deaths. Computerised counselling for the new recruits is under way and all appointees are expected to join duty by July 5, 2025,' a senior KSRTC official said.
Meanwhile, the lack of regular recruitment over the years had led to a severe staff shortage in KSRTC, affecting the quality of services.
Ravi Kumar (name changed), a KSRTC driver with 15 years of experience, said: 'It's a relief that new staff have finally been appointed. There was a serious shortage, and many of us were unable to take timely leaves because of the workload. With more trips being added and responsibilities increasing, the new recruits will definitely ease the pressure on existing employees.'

Delays in Goa road projects could cost Centre crores

Panaji: Over the past few years, bridge and road projects worth over Rs 14,000 crore have been funded by the Union ministry of road transport and highways in Goa. However, some of these infrastructure projects could soon cause losses to the ministry running into hundreds of crores. Contractors of three major projects have already gone in for arbitration in three separate cases, claiming that losses of Rs 300 to Rs 500 crore each have been caused to them due to delay in the projects, sources said. The contractors have said that the delays in the project execution occurred because Goa govt was unable to complete land acquisition for the road or bridge works within the required time. 'Three separate cases are already in the process of arbitration for road and bridge stretches in Cortalim, Mormugao, and Salcete. A fourth contractor is also in the process of taking the same route for work carried out in Pernem. The contractors have said that delays in land acquisition and changes to scope of work caused due to protests have caused them losses of around Rs 400 crore each,' said the source. The contractors have said that their machinery lying idle due to the delay in the works are some of the causes for the losses to them. 'Three of the cases are in advanced stages of arbitration, and if the matter does not go in favour of the govt, then the ministry in two of the cases and Goa govt in one of the cases will have to pay a heavy amount in settlement,' said the source. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Don't Bother With An Expensive Will (Do This Instead) Local Will Finder Undo The Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996, allows for a streamlined system for resolving disputes outside of traditional court proceedings. 'The Act recognizes the parties' autonomy to determine the procedure for arbitration and conciliation. They agree on the terms and conditions of their dispute resolution process. Each party appoints their own arbitrator and there is a chief arbitrator, who could be a retired judge, etc,' said a source. He said that although govt has placed its say that the Covid pandemic and other factors outside its control were also causes for the delay, usually these cases do end in the party having to cough up a settlement amount as per the arbitral award. 'As three of the four projects that have gone for arbitration were tendered by the ministry, the ministry will become liable to pay the amount as per the award,' said the source.

European truckmakers stockpile to deal with Chinese rare-earths crunch

Gothenburg (Sweden): European truckmaker Volvo Group has been seeking alternative sources of rare earths and Daimler Trucks has been building inventories to deal with supply issues linked to Chinese export curbs, saying lessons had been learned from the chip crisis. The automotive industry currently fears that the supply of rare earths, which are needed for magnets, will be hurt by recent export regulations in China. Since April, exporters have had to apply for new licences, which are only slowly being approved. China dominates the market for the raw materials, which are used in various components from electric motors to window mechanisms in cars and trucks. "With everything that's going on in the world right now, this seems to be a good and necessary strategy," Radstrom said. Live Events She said the situation is currently a major focus for Daimler, which it is closely monitoring. "So far, we seem to be getting what we need," she added, saying there have been no production outages so far. Volvo Group's CTO Lars Stenqvist also noted "a little bit of turmoil" around rare-earth supply, and said in the long term, there had been "a clear move" to be less dependent on the minerals. Stenqvist, who also said the group's output had not been affected, emphasised like Radstrom that there had been many lessons learned from the chip crisis. "We learnt during the semiconductor crisis a few years ago that we maybe have had a history of working too much with the tier 1 suppliers," he said. "We are never hesitating to go down in the value chain, down to tier 2, 3, 4, 5 if necessary." "During that (chip) crisis we learned how to navigate down to the mines, and that is what we also need to do when it comes to rare earth metals and minerals," Stenqvist added.

After 8-year gap, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation recruits 2,000 drivers

Bengaluru: To address a long-standing staff crunch, (KSRTC) inducted 2,000 new driver-cum-conductors on Tuesday — the first major recruitment drive in eight years. The corporation, grappling with a shortage of around 5,000 drivers and conductors, had previously resorted to outsourcing 2,000 drivers through private agencies to keep services running. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The delay in recruitment was attributed to multiple factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic, financial constraints, and restrictions from the state govt on fresh appointments. With the induction of new staff, KSRTC plans to add more bus schedules in the coming days. On Tuesday, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy symbolically handed over appointment letters to 51 top-performing candidates who had secured the highest marks during the selection process. KSRTC received 25,494 applications for the posts, of which 13,954 were shortlisted for the selection process.
