Tribals protest against Siramtoli flyover ramp

1 2 Ranchi: Several tribal organisations under the banner of Adivasi Bachao Morcha staged a one-day protest outside Raj Bhavan on Tuesday, demanding the removal of the ramp near the Siramtoli Sarna site and the full implementation of the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA) in Jharkhand. The demonstrators alleged that the ramp near the central Sarna religious site at Siramtoli obstructs large religious gatherings, especially during annual processions, and must be removed immediately. The protest saw participation from former minister Dev Kumar Dhan and Geetashree Oraon, among others. The protestors also accused the state govt of failing to protect tribal constitutional rights despite 25 years of Jharkhand's formation. "From land grabbing to lack of employment, the issues of tribal communities remain unaddressed. The govt has shown no sensitivity toward PESA, Sarna Code, and tribal land rights," said Prem Shahi Munda, convenor of Adivasi Bachao Morcha. Key demands included declaration of sites like Marang Buru, Luguburu, and Mudhar Pahad as tribal religious places, a separate religious code in the census, and withdrawal of policies promoting alcohol in tribal-dominated rural areas.

Cong dharna on May 26 to demand Sarna Code

Ranchi: The state unit of the Congress party will stage a daylong dharna outside Raj Bhavan on May 26 to press for Sarna Code , it announced on Thursday. K Raju, the party's in-charge for Jharkhand affairs, along with state party president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, said Sarna code will give the tribal communities of Jharkhand a separate religious identity. "The Union govt must include a column for the Sarna religion in the upcoming census. We will continue to fight for this until the Sarna code is granted," Raju said while addressing the media here. Ahead of the proposed nationwide caste census , the Grand Old party has been demanding the Narendra Modi govt at the Centre to include a separate column for Sarna code and is accusing it of deliberately ignoring the long-standing demands of the tribals. Kamlesh mentioned that on November 11, 2020, the coalition govt led by Hemant Soren had convened a special session and passed a proposal for the Sarna code, which was sent to the central govt, but no action has been taken yet. "In the upcoming census, one more column has been reduced. Previously there were seven columns, now it has been reduced to six. Every religion has its own code, so the tribals should also have theirs too," he said. Congress legislative party leader Pradeep Yadav on the other hand said that Modi govt has buckled under the press put by Congress and finally decided to conduct a caste-based census.

Caste survey welcome, Sarna code needs clarity: INDIA bloc

1 2 Ranchi: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) led INDIA bloc on Wednesday welcomed the Centre's decision to include caste survey in the next census but said it was concerned with the lack of clarity about the inclusion of a separate religious code for the tribal communities which follow Sarna faith. JMM, Congress and the RJD also termed the Centre's announcement a moral victory for the opposition parties which had been demanding the survey for months now. JMM general secretary cum national spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said many primitive tribes in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat and the north-eastern states follow ancient religions. "The religions of these communities should also be included in the survey. Otherwise, a caste-based census sans these religions will be a half-baked exercise," he said. Notably the state assembly, in a special session in November 2020, had passed a resolution demanding inclusion of Sarna Code in the national census. Bhattacharya demanded that factions of Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism must also be included in the survey. "It is our suggestion that the caste survey and census be completed before delimitation as reservation for women (33% in Lok Sabha) also needs to be implemented in 2029," he said. RJD's state secretary Kailash Yadav said the party had been demanding caste survey for years. Supporting RJD and JMM's stand, state Congress spokesperson Rakesh Sinha said, "When Rahul Gandhi demanded the survey, the BJP neglected it. Better late than never they have realised its importance. It is a welcome move and will ensure also said the exercise will ensure social justice for every section of the society." State BJP president Babulal Marandi also welcomed the move. "Now the focus will be on real social justice, not just vote-bank politics. For decades, the Congress and other opposition parties have used the issue of caste census for electoral gains. But now, a caste-based census has become the need of the hour. The time has come to move away from fragmented, inconsistent, and opaque state-level surveys and adopt a uniform, reliable, and fact-based caste census for the entire nation," he added.
