‘Gir will never be the same': Parimal Nathwani honours late lions with folk tribute
Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh and Reliance Industries' corporate affairs director Parimal Nathwani expressed his grief over the recent deaths of two iconic lions, Jay and Veeru, from Gir National Forest. The lions, known as the 'pride of Gir,' passed away within weeks of each other, leaving a void in the forest and in the hearts of wildlife lovers. Gir will forever carry their imprint, Mr. Nathwani said, noting that while time may move on, the echoes of their presence will continue to shape the forest they once called home. 'Gir will never be the same without them.' In a span of just over a month, Gir lost two of its famed lions to two separate territorial fights. Veeru succumbed to his injuries on June 11, followed by Jay, who died on July 29 after struggling to recover from a separate clash. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Gir and made it a point to see the famed duo, known for their unbreakable bond. Mr. Nathwani, a wildlife enthusiast, also released a soulful folk-style song titled 'Jay-Veeru Ni Jodi', and a documentary titled 'Jay-Veeru Ni Amar Gatha', capturing the spirit, bond, and legacy of the two beloved big cats who recently passed away. He broke down in tears as he spoke about his bond with the lions, his voice trembling with emotion while recalling the years spent observing the duo. Set against the backdrop of traditional melodies and rustic instruments, the song is a homage to the indomitable duo who once ruled the Gir forests with grace, strength, and brotherhood, he said. 'The composition reflects the deep emotional connection between the two lions and the countless admirers they left behind.' Renowned Gujarati singer Aditya Gadhvi provided vocals for the track and documentary, while acclaimed writer Parth Tarpara penned the lyrics and story. The music was composed by Kedar & Bhargav, the same duo behind the popular song *GirGajavati Aavi Sinhan*, released by Mr. Nathwani on World Lion Day (August 10, 2024). Crafted by folk artists deeply rooted in Gujarat's cultural heritage, 'Jay-Veeru Ni Jodi' is more than just a song—it is a celebration of the lions' enduring legacy and an emotional farewell to two majestic beings who transcended their animal identity to become legends of Gir. 'Jay and Veeru were not just lions—they symbolised loyalty, unity, and companionship. Their story moved many of us deeply,' said Mr. Nathwani. 'This song and the documentary express the emotions I, and many other lion lovers, feel. It is my way of honouring their memory.' To commemorate this year's World Lion Day, Mr. Nathwani also designed special T-shirts in honor of Jay and Veeru, available at the Sasan-Gir Souvenir Shop. 'Let the spirit of Jay and Veeru roar forever in our hearts. Through this song and documentary, I hope to immortalise their memory in a way they truly deserve,' he said. The Rajya Sabha MP also recalled his close connection to the iconic lions, noting that he was personally involved in naming Jay and Veeru alongside forest department officials.

Song by Coke Studio singer, documentary: How the famed friendship of Gir lion duo Jay-Veeru is being kept alive
As he paid tribute to Jay and Veeru by releasing a folk-style song and a documentary on them, Rajya Sabha MP and wildlife enthusiast Parimal Nathwani Thursday said that to keep the memories of the Gir lion duo alive, he will request the Prime Minister to issue a postal stamp on them. The two adult lions, renowned for their friendship, had sustained serious injuries in territorial fights in June when they were not in each other's company. Veeru died on June 11 while Jay succumbed to its injuries on July 29. Nathwani released the folk-style song titled 'Jay Veeru ni Jodi' and a documentary called 'Jay-Veeru ni Amar Gatha'. According to an official statement on the event, 'Renowned singer Aditya Gadhvi has lent his voice to the track and the documentary. Acclaimed Gujarati screenplay and songwriter Parth Tarpara has penned the lyrics and story. The music is composed by the talented duo Kedar & Bhargav.' Gadhvi rose to nationwide fame in 2024 after his Coke Studio song 'Khalasi' became a chartbuster. In memory of Jay-Veeru, Nathwani also got designed special commemorative T-shirts, which will be available at the Sasan-Gir Souvenir Shop, as per the statement. An emotional Nathwani, while reminiscing about the lion duo, said, 'Jay and Veeru were not just lions — they symbolised loyalty, unity, and companionship. Their story moved many of us deeply. In reply to a question on how he wants to carry forward Jay-Veeru's memory, Nathwani said, 'I will request the government and the Prime Minister to issue postal stamp (on the duo). And on my part, I will certainly do whatever I can.'
